Judo Canada – World Junior Championships

Rough Day for Canada

Montreal, October 24, 2015 – Saturday was not the most productive day for Canadian judokas at the Abu Dhabi World Junior Championships, in the United Arab Emirates. Both Jessica Klimkait (Under 57 kg) and Patrick Cantin (Under 73 kg) were shown the door early on in the competition.

After receiving a bye in the opening round, Whitby, ON native Jessica Klimkait was up against Peruvian Karen Cornejo, 46th in the world. The 18-year-old Canadian, 16th, won the match with a waza-ari and a yuko, whereas Cornejo scored no points and had two penalties to her name.

Her second bout pitted her against French Sarah Harachi, 12th, who scored a waza-ari and took one penalty, against the Canadian’s zero points and one penalty, resulting in Klimkait’s elimination.

“Jessica had a good first fight,” said Canadian coach Jean-Pierre Cantin. “She got in a waza-ari early on, kept in control for the remainder of the match, and won. Her second fight was tougher. Jessica fought with a lot of grit, but the French judoka’s kumikata game was stronger and after she scored a waza-ari, Jessica didn’t manage to bounce back.”

On the men’s side, Quebecer Patrick Cantin faced up to Austria’s Christopher Wagner, 59th in the world, in the Under 73 kg class. The 20-year-old Deux-Montagnes native, 66th, lost the match after taking two penalties, whereas Wagner wasn’t penalized at all. Cantin will be back on the mat on Tuesday, for the Under 73 kg team championships.

“It was a tough fight for Cantin,” said the coach. “He wasn’t able to take control and impose his pace. His opponent didn’t get to throw him or score any points, but he was active enough to win with two penalties.”

On Sunday, five other Canadians will be competing in Abu Dhabi. Alberta’s Jaquina Simao (Under 63 kg), Oshawa’s Emily Burt (Under 63 kg) and Waterloo’s Monika Burgess (Under 70 kg) will be representing Canadian women, whereas Montreal’s Louis Krieber-Gagnon and Champlain’s Olivier Gobeil-St-Amand will be representing Canadian men in the tournament.

European Cup

Meanwhile, in Lund, Sweden, Canadian Warren Seib competed in the Under 73 kg division of the European Cup. The 23-year-old won his first match, against Dutch Antoin Binnenhei, with a yuko and an ippon. Binnenhei had two penalties to his name.

He wasn’t as lucky in his second bout, however, and lost to French Julien La Rocca, who scored a waza-ari and took two penalties, while Seib took three penalties of his own.

In repechage, Seib was up against Swedish Christoffer Macias, who won the match with a yuko and an ippon.

This Sunday, Alix Renaud-Roy will be competing in the Under 70 kg class. The La Pocatière athlete will go up against France’s Gwenalle Viard in her first match.
