Julien Sale défend son titre au Alexandre de Tunis

À son inauguration, en 2018, l’événement était exclusivement féminin. Absente cette année, l’amateur Grace St-Germain (Camelot) avait remporté la victoire avec un score cumulatif de 215, soit deux coups d’avance sur l’Américaine Brooke Baker de Simpsonville, en Caroline du Sud. Baker sera de retour la semaine prochaine pour défendre son titre dans la division professionnelle féminine.

Cette année, le comité organisateur est fier d’ajouter une division masculine à cette compétition relevée. Les enjeux y seront de tailles puisque 35 golfeurs professionnels tenteront de mettre la main sur la place d’exemption qui sera octroyée au meilleur québécois de la division masculine pour l’Omnium Placements Mackenzie qui aura lieu du 5 au 8 septembre au club de golf Elm Ridge.

Julien Sale resists Sévigny’s come back

He successfully defends his title at the Alexander of Tunis

Montréal, July 5, 2019 – This Friday, amateur golfers had to compose with excessive heat as the 70^th edition of the Alexander of Tunis was presented by Turkish Airlines in collaboration with belairdirect at the Rideau View Golf Club in Manotick, Ontario. Leader after completion of the first round, Julien Sale (Rivermead) excelled on the back nine, registering four birdies and an eagle to finish the day at -5 (67) and successfully defend his title acquired in 2018.

“I felt very good on the course! Yesterday (Thursday), everything went very smoothly. I kept my game as simple as possible and played -6 (66). Today, I had to work much harder, mostly due to the heat! I made sure to keep hydrated throughout the round and to rest in the shade as often as I could. This was helpful and I am very proud of the outcome,” explained the winner of the first leg of the Men’s Triple Crown.

His overall score of -11 (133) also led him to break the tournament record (136), which he had tied in 2018.

The victory was not a done deal for Sale who had to compose with the Gatineau resident, Ryan Sévigny (Eagle Creek), who was right on his tail. Actually, Sévigny even took the lead of the event as he finished his second round at -6 (66) for a cumulative score of 137 (-7).

Quite aware that some of his opponents were catching up to him, Sale ignored the pressure and patiently found his bearings again. This frame of mind enabled him to capture the title for a second consecutive year and raise the trophy of the “Tunis”, the most prestigious amateur tournament presented in the Ottawa region.

“I knew that some of the guys had played solid rounds and that I had to bring in my A game. Up to the fourteenth hole, I was playing the par and, then, everything became easier. I made a birdie and was able to maintain that pace up to the last hole where I made an eagle.”

As the young 20-year-old athlete explained, this victory is quite special as this is the first time that he is able to successfully defend a title.

“I am so proud that I was able to make it! On Thursday morning, I could feel the pressure. As I showed up to tee-off, I told myself that this was just another tournament, just like any others. I didn’t want to add more pressure than needed. I did the same today! I kept things simple and that led me to the victory,” he added.

About the Alexander of Tunis

In its history, many names were written more than once on that coveted trophy. Of course, the name of Graham Cooke who was crowned 4 times comes to mind with the likes of Robbie Jackson of Royal Montreal who stands out of the crowd with his 4 consecutive titles won from 1973 to 1976.

Upcoming event

After visiting the Gatineau area, the Golf Québec team is now heading to Golf Château-Bromont for the Bromont Invitational in which amateur golfers will get to measure up to professional players from July 7 to 9.

This year, the organizing committee is quite proud to add a men’s division in this high calibre competition. The stakes will be high as 35 professional golfers will attempt to earn an exemption given to the best Québec player of the men's division for the Mackenzie Investments Open to be held, from September 5 to 8, at the Elm Ridge Country Club.
