Montréal, 23 juin 2023 – Jessica Klimkait et Christa Deguchi ont prouvé une fois de plus vendredi qu’elles étaient véritablement au sommet de la catégorie des moins de 57 kg en se retrouvant toutes les deux en finale du Grand Chelem de judo d’Oulan-Bator, en Mongolie.

Deguchi, championne du monde en titre a réussi à s’imposer lors de cet affrontement en demeurant patiente et en forçant son adversaire à commettre des erreurs. Klimkait a d’ailleurs été pénalisée à deux reprises lors des 75 premières secondes de l’affrontement.

C’est finalement un troisième shido à l’endroit de Klimkait qui aura procuré la victoire à Christa Deguchi.

« Jessica et Christa ont été convaincantes tout au long de la journée. En finale, mon rôle est plus effacé, je ne veux pas intervenir et je me contente d’encadrer leur réchauffement. Ç’a été un combat tactique en finale qui s’est joué sur les pénalités et c’est Christa qui a finalement eu l’avantage », a mentionné l’entraîneur national Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Pour atteindre la finale du jour, Deguchi a d’abord profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour avant de venir à bout d’Eunsong Park de la Corée du Sud et d’Altantsetseg Batsukh des Émirats arabes unis. Elle a ensuite eu raison de l’athlète internationale neutre Kseniia Galitskaia, future médaillée de bronze, en demi-finale.

« Christa peut être fière de sa victoire, c’est une grosse étape dans un long processus qui va nous mener jusqu’aux Jeux olympiques de Paris. J’imagine qu’elle est très contente de sa journée. Ça ajoute certainement un petit stress supplémentaire d’affronter une compatriote comme ça, mais elles sont toutes les deux parmi les meilleures au monde et c’est excellent de les voir s’affronter fréquemment », a indiqué Valois-Fortier.

De son côté, Klimkait a eu raison de la Lettone Anastasija Sokirjanska, de la Britannique Nekoda Smythe-Davis et de la Sud-Coréenne Mimi Huh, elle aussi future médaillée de bronze, afin de rejoindre sa compatriote pour l’affrontement ultime.

« Jessica a imposé son rythme lors de ses trois premiers affrontements et elle a effectué de solides projections pour l’emporter. Elle a été impressionnante jusqu’à la fin », a ajouté l’entraîneur.

Il s’agit de la première médaille d’or en Grand Chelem pour Christa Deguchi depuis sa conquête à Bakou en novembre 2022.

Lors du dernier rendez-vous entre les deux canadiennes, c’est Klimkait qui s’était imposée en grande finale du Grand Chelem de Tel-Aviv en février dernier.

Également en action vendredi à Oulan-Bator, Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg) a été défaite à son seul combat de la journée devant Gal-Od Tserentogtokh de la Mongolie. L’Israélienne Gefen Primo a remporté la médaille d’or de la catégorie.

Samedi, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) seront en action dans la capitale de la Mongolie.

Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg) et Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) fouleront quant à eux les tatamis dimanche.

Another Klimkait–Deguchi Final!

Montréal, June 23, 2023 – On Friday, Jessica Klimkait and Christa Deguchi proved once again that they are truly the top contenders in the under-57 kg weight category. The two judokas were pitted against each other in the big final at the Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam in Mongolia.

Deguchi, the reigning world champion, clinched the gold medal by biding her time and forcing her opponent to make errors. Klimkait received two penalties in the first 75 seconds of the bout.

She later received a third, giving Deguchi the win.

“Jessica and Christa were solid all day. Once they’re in the final, I play a smaller role. I don’t want to interfere, so I mainly just help them with their warm-ups. Today’s final was very tactical. It came down to penalties, and Christa came out ahead,” said national coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Deguchi began her day with a first-round bye. She then defeated Eunsong Park of South Korea and Altantsetseg Batsukh of the United Arab Emirates in the next two rounds. In the semi-final, she bested neutral international athlete Kseniia Galitskaia, who later won a bronze medal.

“Christa should be proud of her win. It’s a major step in a long process that will lead all the way to the Paris Olympics. I believe she’s happy with her day. It’s always extra stressful when you’re up against one of your own countrymates, but both of them are among the best in the world, and it’s great to see them compete against each other so often,” added Valois-Fortier.

As for Klimkait, before facing her teammate in the final, she dispatched of Anastasija Sokirjanska of Latvia, Nekoda Smythe-Davis of Great Britain and Mimi Huh of South Korea, who also won a bronze medal.

“In her first three fights, Jessica really set the tempo and made some great throws. She fought very impressively right up to the end,” explained her coach.

Today’s medal was Deguchi’s first gold medal at a Grand Slam since she won in Baku in November 2022.

The last time the two Canadians fought each other, at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam in February, Klimkait was the victor in the big final.

Also in action on Friday in Ulaanbaatar was Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg), who lost her only fight of the day to Gal-Od Tserentogtokh of Mongolia. Gefen Primo of Israel won the gold medal in that weight division.

On Saturday, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) will hit the tatamis in the Mongolian capital.

Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg) and Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) will compete on Sunday.
