Des premières ardues, mais motivantes pour les jeunes Canadiens

Montréal, 23 août 2023 –Les judokas Maria-Magdaleina Delye et Loic Beaton n’ont pas obtenu le résultat espéré, mercredi, du côté de Zagreb, où ils vivaient leur baptême de feu en Championnats du monde cadets. Même si leurs attentes étaient plus élevées, ils repartiront tout de même de la Croatie avec une motivation renouvelée, selon leur entraîneur Alexandre Emond.

Inscrite au tableau des moins de 44 kg, Maria-Magdaleina Delyea affronté l’Américaine Malia Manibog dans ce qui était le tout premier combat international de sa carrière. Malgré la nervosité, la Québécoise de 16 ans n’a rien laissé paraître pendant ce combat de 71 secondes qui s’est conclu en sa faveur.

Bien en contrôle, la judoka de l’unifolié est rapidement parvenue à amener sa rivale au sol, où elle est parvenue à l’immobiliser par étranglement pour éventuellement l’emporter par ippon. « C’était une très belle victoire et elle n’a laissé aucun doute sur sa préparation ! » a lancé l’entraîneur national Alexandre Emond

Quelques minutes plus tard, Delye avait rendez-vous avec l’Ouzbek Laziza Haydarova, une compétitrice aguerrie qui s’était classée cinquième de la catégorie aux mondiaux cadets 2022, en Bosnie-Herzégovine.

Haydarova a mis son expérience à profit dans ce combat qu’elle a remporté par ippon en moins d’une minute. La gagnante a ensuite poursuivi son chemin jusqu’en finale de bronze, où elle s’est imposée pour conclure avec une médaille de bronze.

« C’était une très grosse commande pour Maria-Magdaleina et on savait que ce serait difficile », a avoué Emond, qui demeure tout de même positive pour sa protégée.

« C’est sûr que ça ne s’est pas terminé comme elle le voulait, mais ça reste une très bonne expérience pour elle. Le niveau est très relevé et on pouvait observer un peu plus de stress qu’à l’habitude. Elle n’était pas habituée à ces conditions, mais elle était prête. Ça lui servira d’inspiration pour le futur, c’est certain. »

Seul autre Canadien en lice en ouverture de ces Championnats du monde cadets, Loic Beaton s’est incliné d’entrée de jeu contre l’Angolais Claudio Francisco chez les moins de 55 kg.

L’Albertain avait pourtant démarré sa journée sur les chapeaux de roues, forçant même son adversaire à écoper de deux shidos. Le vent a cependant tourné lorsqu’il a voulu mettre fin aux hostilités en lançant une fausse attaque pour provoquer une troisième pénalité fatale. Francisco a su éviter le piège et c’est finalement Beaton qui a reçu la réprimande de l’officiel.

« On a vraiment senti que le momentum a changé de côté à partir de là. La stratégie était la bonne, mais l’exécution n’était pas assez à point », a raconté Emond au sujet de cet affrontement qui a nécessité la tenue d’une prolongation.

Malgré deux shidos de chaque côté, le duel s’est poursuivi pendant un peu plus de quatre minutes, jusqu’à ce que Francisco parvienne à inscrire un waza-ari grâce à une attaque d’épaule qui lui a permis de renverser Beaton.

« Rendu là, il y avait beaucoup de fatigue pour les deux athlètes et l’Angolais a réussi à faire l’attaque qui fait la différence, a poursuivi le pilote du Canada. C’est vraiment dommage, parce que Loic a dominé la majeure partie du combat. Malheureusement, je pense que le stress a joué contre lui et il a dû s’avouer vaincu. »

Il s’agissait aussi d’une première présence aux mondiaux cadets pour Beaton. En dépit de l’amertume de la défaite, Alexandre Emond est d’avis que l’athlète de 17 ans pourra s’en servir comme motivation à son retour au pays.

« C’est assez impressionnant pour les jeunes et c’est normal d’être nerveux ! Je pense que Loic est conscient qu’il aurait pu remporter ce combat, mais ça lui prouve aussi qu’il n’est vraiment pas loin du niveau des meilleurs au monde. C’est ce qu’il doit retenir et je crois que ça lui donnera le goût de s’entraîner encore plus fort ! » a conclu l’entraîneur.

Les combats reprendront jeudi sur les tatamis de Zagreb avec la présentation des tournois dans quatre nouvelles catégories. Les Canadiens Mélody Grenier (-48 kg), Laurence Gagnon (-52 kg), Leanna Au (-52 kg), Luka Tsatsalashvili (-60 kg), Vincent Nepton (-60 kg), Fahd Fithane (-66 kg) et Vincent Roberge-Poitras (-66 kg) seront en action pour l’occasion.

Tough but Motivating Debuts for Young Canadians

Montréal, August 23, 2023 –Judokas Maria-Magdaleina Delye and Loic Beaton did not achieve the results they had hoped for on Wednesday in Zagreb, where they made their international debuts at the Cadet World Championships. Although they may not have met expectations, they will leave Croatia with renewed motivation, according to Canadian national coach Alexandre Emond.

In the under-44 kg weight division, Delye was pitted against Malia Manibog of the USA in her first-ever international match. Despite her jitters, the 16-year-old Québécoise did not falter once during the 71-second bout, which ended in her favour. She remained in control throughout the fight, quickly knocking her opponent to the ground, where she immobilized her by choke hold and won by ippon.

“It was a beautiful win, and it left no doubt as to her level of preparation!” declared Emond.

A few moments later, Delye was up against Uzbekistan’s Laziza Haydarova, a seasoned competitor who had finished fifth in the same weight division at the 2022 Cadet World Championships in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Haydarova put her experience to good use, clinching the match by ippon in less than a minute. She then advanced to the bronze medal final, where she won, finishing the day with a bronze medal.

“It was a tall order for Maria-Magdaleina, and we knew it would be difficult,” explained Emond, who nevertheless regards his protégée’s prospects positively.

“Obviously, it didn’t end the way she would have liked, but it was still a great experience for her. The level of competition was very high, and she was clearly more stressed than usual. Competing in those types of conditions was new to her, but she was ready. It will definitely serve as inspiration for the future.”

The only other Canadian in action on day one of the Cadet World Championships was Beaton, who lost his first and only bout of the day in the under-55 kg weight category to Claudio Francisco of Angola.

The Albertan had gotten off to a strong start, forcing his opponent to take two shidos. However, the tide turned when he attempted to bring the bout to a close by launching a false attack and forcing his opponent to take a third penalty. Francisco successfully avoided the trap, and Beaton was the one to be penalized.

“The momentum really shifted after that. It was a good strategy, but the execution was not quite on point,” said Emond of the bout, which went into overtime.

Although the competitors had received two penalties each, the bout continued for more than four minutes, until Francisco scored a waza-ari with a shoulder attack that knocked Beaton over.

“By then, both athletes were very tired, and the Angolan landed the attack that made the difference,” continued Emond. “It’s really too bad, because Loic had dominated for most of the fight. Unfortunately, I think stress played a role, and he lost the match.” 

It was also Beaton’s first appearance at the Cadet World Championships. And despite having tasted the bitterness of defeat, the 17-year-old Canadian will be able to use the experience as motivation upon his return home, says Emond.

“It’s a pretty impressive [event] for a young person, and it’s normal to be nervous! I think Loic knows he could have won that fight, and it also proves to him that he’s close to the level of the best in the world. That’s what he has to retain from this, and I think it will make him want to train even harder!” concluded the coach.

The action will resume on Thursday in Zagreb, with tournaments in four additional weight categories. Canadians Mélody Grenier (-48 kg), Laurence Gagnon (-52 kg), Leanna Au (-52 kg), Luka Tsatsalashvili (-60 kg), Vincent Nepton (-60 kg), Fahd Fithane (-66 kg) and Vincent Roberge-Poitras (-66 kg) will all hit the tatamis.
