Une récolte de quatre médailles, dont deux d’or, à Calgary

Montréal, 16 septembre 2023 – Les judokas canadiens ont fait plaisir à leurs partisans réunis au complexe Winsport de Calgary alors qu’ils ont mis la main sur quatre médailles, samedi, aux Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie. François Gauthier-Drapeau (Québec) et Shady ElNahas (Ontario) sont montés sur la plus haute marche du podium, Louis Krieber-Gagnon (Québec) a obtenu l’argent et Marc Deschênes (Québec) a été décoré du bronze.

François Gauthier-Drapeau était très fier d’avoir été sacré champion continental des moins de 81 kg pour la première fois de sa carrière. Qui plus est, il a vaincu en finale le Brésilien Guilherme Schimidt, champion des deux dernières éditions.

« J’étais vraiment primé pour aller chercher l’or aujourd’hui (samedi) ! La compétition étant à Calgary, j’étais encore plus motivé, car c’était devant nos amis. Et en plus, mes parents étaient dans les estrades, donc c’était une motivation supplémentaire », a reconnu l’athlète de 25 ans qui vise une première participation olympique l’an prochain.

Avant le match de samedi, les finalistes s’étaient affrontés deux fois avec une victoire de chaque côté.

« Je connaissais ses techniques et j’ai bien géré la stratégie en sachant comment bien faire ma prise. J’ai suivi le plan de match à la lettre et j’ai marqué un point avec peu de temps à faire. C’était une bonne performance. […] (Être champion panaméricain), c’était un objectif que j’avais depuis longtemps. Si tu veux être un grand judoka au Canada, il faut que tu sois champion panam. »

Shady ElNahas n’était pas au sommet de sa forme, sauf qu’il a tout de même pu venir à bout du Brésilien Leonardo Goncalves dans le combat pour la médaille d’or des moins de 100 kg. Il s’agit pour lui d’un quatrième titre panaméricain depuis le début de sa carrière.

« J’ai eu beaucoup de blessures cette année, alors il y avait toujours un peu de doutes, a reconnu l’athlète. Par contre, je crois en mon judo et mon coach Antoine Valois-Fortier. En finale, j’ai juste écouté ce qu’il m’a dit et ç’a marché. Il me connaît assez bien pour savoir quoi me dire. Ma forme était à 7,5 sur 10 à cause des blessures, mais mon mental, lui, était à 10 sur 10. »

Son compatriote ontarien Kyle Reyes avait aussi la chance de quitter Calgary avec une médaille, sauf qu’il s’est avoué vaincu dans son match pour la troisième place contre le Chilien Thomas Briceno. Il s’agit d’une revanche pour le Chilien qui avait perdu contre le Canadien en finale des Championnats panaméricains de 2021.

Louis Krieber-Gagnon (Québec) s’est incliné en grande finale des moins de 90 kg alors qu’il était opposé au Brésilien Rafael Macedo. Notons qu’il s’agit d’une première médaille en carrière aux Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie pour le Montréalais de 27 ans.

Dans ce même tableau, le Québécois Alexandre Arencibia a remis une fiche de 1-2 et n’a pas obtenu de classement après avoir vu son parcours prendre fin contre l’éventuel médaillé d’or.

Finalement, chez les plus de 100 kg, Marc Deschênes (Québec) a procuré une quatrième médaille au pays en ayant raison de sa victoire aux dépens du Cubain Omar Leon Cruz dans son match de troisième place.

Journée plus courte pour les Canadiennes

Laurence Biron (Québec) est la seule des trois Canadiennes en action samedi à avoir signé une victoire. Dans le tableau des moins de -70 kg, l’athlète de 19 ans a d’abord eu raison de l’Argentine Victoria Delvecchio par ippon avant d’être vaincue à ses deux combats suivants, terminant ainsi au septième rang. Une semaine plus tôt, Biron avait remporté l’or à ces mêmes Championnats, mais dans la catégorie junior.

Toujours dans le tableau des moins de -70 kg, l’Ontarienne Alexandria Lefort a été éliminée au premier tour. La Québécoise Coralie Godbout a connu le même sort dans la catégorie des moins de 78 kg.

La conclusion des Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie sera présentée dimanche avec au programme les compétitions par équipes.

Judo Canada – Pan-American/Oceania Championships

Four Medals, Including Two Gold, in Calgary

Montréal, September 16, 2023 – Canada’s judokas delighted their fans at Calgary’s Winsport Complex on Saturday, capturing four medals at the Pan-American/Oceania Championships. François Gauthier-Drapeau (Quebec) and Shady ElNahas (Ontario) clinched gold medals, Louis Krieber-Gagnon (Quebec) earned silver, and Marc Deschênes (Quebec) won bronze.

Gauthier-Drapeau was proud to secure the first continental championship title of his career in the under-81 kg weight division. And to make his victory even sweeter, he defeated reigning champion Guilherme Schimidt of Brazil, winner of the last two Pan-American/Oceania Championships, in the final.

“I was really determined to win gold today! And the fact that the competition was being held in Calgary pumped me up even more, because we have friends here. Plus, my parents were in the stands, so that gave me extra motivation,” said the 25-year-old, who has his sights set on competing in his first Olympic Games next year.

Prior to Saturday’s match, the two finalists had fought each other twice, each winning one of the two bouts.

“I was familiar with his techniques, so I managed my strategy well, keeping in mind how to use my grips effectively. I applied my game plan to the letter, and I scored a point just before the time ran out. It was a good performance. […] It’s been my goal to [be Pan-American champion] for a long time. To make it big as a judoka in Canada, you have to win the Pan-Am.” 

Although Shady ElNahas wasn’t at the top of his game today, he nevertheless succeeded in defeating Brazil’s Leonardo Goncalves in the under-100 kg gold medal final and capturing the fourth Pan-American title of his career.

“I’ve had a lot of injuries this year, so there was some doubt,” admitted the athlete. “However, I’m confident in my judo and in my coach, Antoine Valois-Fortier. During the final, I just did what he told me to do, and it worked. He knows me well enough to know what to say. Physically, I was at about 7.5/10 because of my injuries, but mentally, I was at 10/10.” 

ElNahas’ fellow Ontarian Kyle Reyes also came close to winning a medal in Calgary; however, he bowed out to Thomas Briceno of Chile in the bronze medal final. It was a payback of sorts for Briceno, who had been defeated by Reyes in the 2021 Pan-American Championships.

In the under-90 kg big final, Louis Krieber-Gagnon of Montréal lost to Rafael Macedo of Brazil. Today’s silver medal was the first PanAmerican/Oceania Championships medal of 27-year-old Krieber-Gagnon’s career.

In the same weight division, Quebec’s Alexandre Arencibia posted one win and two losses and did not rank after being eliminated by Macedo.

In the over-100 kg weight category, Marc Deschênes secured a fourth medal for Canada when he defeated Omar Leon Cruz of Cuba in the bronze medal final.

A short day for Canada’s women

Of the three Canadian women in action on Saturday, Laurence Biron (Quebec) was the only one to win a match. In the under-70 kg category, the 19-year-old defeated Victoria Delvecchio of Argentina by ippon, but lost her next two bouts and finished seventh. Last weekend, Biron won gold at the same Championships, but in the junior age category.

Also in the under-70 kg weight division, Ontario’s Alexandria Lefort was eliminated in the first round. Coralie Godbout of Quebec met the same fate in the under-78 kg category.

The PanAmerican/Oceania Championships will conclude on Sunday with the team events.
