L’équipe canadienne brille à Guadalajara

Montréal, 26 septembre 2023 – Les judokas canadiens ont décroché pas moins de onze médailles à Guadalajara cette fin de semaine. Sept ont d’abord été gagnées aux Championnats panaméricains de kata, puis quatre se sont ajoutées à l’occasion des Championnats panaméricains des vétérans.

On a notamment vu Ivan Fournier et Pierre Pelletier finir au sommet du classement en Goshin Jutsu, raflant l’or grâce à leurs 490,5 points. Ils ont été accompagnés d’un autre duo canadien sur le podium, soit celui d’Allyn Takahashi et Tony Walby, médaillés de bronze avec 458,5 points.

Shane Rooney et Bailey Hu ont aussi connu du succès au Mexique. Ils ont mis la main sur deux médailles, soit l’or en Kime No Kata (508 points) et l’argent en Nage No Kata (397 points).

Des médailles de bronze ont également été remises à Shane Le Gros et Dan Rusu en Kime No Kata, eux qui ont cumulé 482,5 points. Toujours dans cette catégorie, Mario Pageau et Martin Vallières pointent au quatrième échelon avec un total de 478,5, à seulement quatre points d’une place sur le podium.

Notons que Le Gros et Rusu se sont aussi classés cinquièmes (356 points) en Ju No Kata où Aiko Lachaine et Danielle Ferland ont reçu le bronze avec un pointage de 373.

En ce qui a trait le Katame No Kata, Edward Zupancic et Andrei Oudovikine ont pris le sixième rang (316 points), suivis de près par leurs compatriotes Simon Dufour et Philippe Dutremble, septièmes (310 points).

Chez les moins de 23 ans, le duo composé de Frédéric Lachance et Jean-Sébastien Roy est monté sur la deuxième marche du podium en Nage No Kata. Les deux Québécois ont cumulé 334,5 points. Isack Berger et Félix-Antoine Fontaine ont quant à eux conclu au pied du podium avec leurs 318 points.

Quatre en quatre pour les vétérans

Toujours à Guadalajara, l’équipe nationale n’est pas passée inaperçue aux Championnats panaméricains des vétérans, où les quatre Canadiens en action sont tous repartis du Mexique avec une médaille dans leurs bagages.

Daniel Bird s’est démarqué dans la catégorie des moins de 90 kg M8. Il a gagné ses deux duels dans un deux de trois face au Brésilien Braulio Barboza afin de décrocher la médaille d’or.

L’Ontarien n’a pas été le seul judoka canadien à monter sur la plus haute marche du podium. Jose Mechato l’a imité chez les moins de 66 kg M4. Il a signé deux victoires en autant de combats contre l’Américain Carlos Sordo, dont une en prolongation, afin d’être couronné champion.

De son côté, Eric Velez (M4, -90 kg) a terminé deuxième avec une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite. Il a vaincu le Mexicain Felipe Pulido et s’est incliné devant l’Équatorien Freddy Avalos.

Arnaud Milord-Nadon, qui a combattu chez les moins de 81 kg M2, a entamé la compétition en l’emportant face au Mexicain Roberto Balderas. Il a ensuite eu le dessus sur l’Américain Mark Tamulionis afin d’atteindre la finale, où il a perdu aux mains du Brésilien Cristiano Mori pour conclure sa journée avec une médaille d’argent.

Team Canada Shines in Guadalajara

Montreal, September 26^th, 2023 – Canadian judokas picked up an impressive total of eleven medals in Guadalajara this weekend, seven of which came at the Pan-American Kata Championships and four more at the Pan-American Veterans Championships.

Ivan Fournier and Pierre Pelletier finished at the top of the rankings in Goshin Jutsu, clinching gold with 490.5 points. They were joined on the podium by another Canadian duo, Allyn Takahashi and Tony Walby, who won bronze with 458.5 points.

Shane Rooney and Bailey Hu also performed brilliantly in Mexico, winning two medals. The first was a gold in Kime No Kata (508 points); the second was a silver in Nage No Kata (397 points).

Shane Le Gros and Dan Rusu won bronze in Kime No Kata, with a total of 482.5 points. In the same category, Mario Pageau and Martin Vallières finished fourth with a score of 478.5, only four points from a spot on the podium.

Le Gros and Rusu also earned a fifth-place finish in Ju No Kata, with 356 points, while Aiko Lachaine and Danielle Ferland captured the bronze, with 373 points.

In Katame No Kata, Edward Zupancic and Andrei Oudovikine finished sixth with a score of 316 points. Their countrymates Simon Dufour and Philippe Dutremble were not far behind, placing seventh with 310 points.

In the U23 age group, the Québécois duo comprised of Frédéric Lachance and Jean-Sébastien Roy won silver in Nage No Kata, with a total of 334.5 points. Isack Berger and Félix-Antoine Fontaine finished at the foot of the podium, with 318 points.

Clean sweep for the veterans

The national team did not go unnoticed at the Pan-American Veterans Championships in Guadalajara, as the four Canadians in action all left Mexico with a medal around their necks.

Daniel Bird stood out in the under-90 kg M8 category as he won both his duels in a two-of-three against Brazil’s Braulio Barboza to claim the gold medal.

The Ontarian wasn’t the only Canadian judoka to stand atop the podium. Jose Mechato followed suit in the under-66 kg M4 category, scoring two victories in as many bouts against American Carlos Sordo, including one in overtime, to be crowned champion.

Eric Velez (M4, -90 kg) finished second with a record of one win and one loss. He defeated Mexico’s Felipe Pulido and lost to Ecuador’s Freddy Avalos.

Arnaud Milord-Nadon, who fought in the under-81 kg M2 category, started the competition with a win over Mexico’s Roberto Balderas. He then got the better of American Mark Tamulionis to reach the final, where he lost to Brazilian Cristiano Mori to end his day with a silver medal.
