Montréal, 22 avril 2024 – C’est un impressionnant total de 13 athlètes canadiens qui se sont retrouvés dans un combat pour une médaille lundi, aux Championnats panaméricains cadets, à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil. Sept représentants de l’unifolié sont finalement montés sur le podium, avec Lowan Le Bris en tête, médaillé d’or chez les moins de 66 kg.

En finale, Le Bris a eu besoin du temps supplémentaire pour venir à bout de l’Argentin Reiver Alvarenga Soto. Le Britanno-Colombien a réussi à mettre la touche finale après 46 secondes en prolongation en immobilisant son adversaire au sol.

Pour obtenir son billet pour le duel ultime, Le Bris a vaincu coup sur coup le Mexicain Leonel Martinez Ruiz, l’Équatorien Alfredo Valdivieso ainsi que l’Argentin Tobias Vidal. Le combat face à Valivieso a d’ailleurs été âprement disputé, nécessitant près de 3 minutes de prolongation.

« Lowan a connu une excellente journée. Il a été dominant lors de chacun de ses affrontements et n’a jamais semblé en danger. Il a été très bon dans les transitions également, il m’a beaucoup impressionné. C’est sa première victoire chez les cadets et je suis très fier de lui. Il a démontré tout son potentiel », a commenté l’entraîneur Sasha Mehmedovic.

De son côté, Munkhu Batbayar était en finale chez les moins de 90 kg face au Brésilien Gelson Ricken. Batbayar a malheureusement reçu trois pénalités et s’est incliné, concluant la compétition en deuxième place. Il avait auparavant battu l’Américain Vladimir Manukyan pour se retrouver en finale.

Chez les moins de 70 kg, Charline Bourque est elle aussi montée sur la deuxième marche du podium, subissant la défaite en finale face à la Brésilienne Maria Hottis. En retard par un point dans la dernière minute du combat, Bourque a multiplié les attaques pour tenter de marquer à son tour. Hottis, encouragée par la foule, a toutefois su résister pour l’emporter.

« Munkhu et Charline ont tous les deux affronter des Brésiliens en finale devant une foule bruyante. Ça n’a pas été très facile pour eux. Ils ont tous les deux très bien paru quand même et ils peuvent être très fiers de leur journée », a ajouté Mehmedovic.

Dans la même catégorie que Bourque, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele a remporté une médaille de bronze grâce à une victoire éclatante face à Victoria Ramirez Peguero de la République Dominicaine.

Chez les moins de 52 kg, Mélody Grenier s’est signalée en mettant la main sur une médaille de bronze. L’athlète du Club de Judo Boucherville a remporté son premier duel face à la Paraguayenne Stefany Salinas avant de subir la défaite devant l’Américaine Aubrey Genereux.

Dans la même catégorie, Isla Diesmos a terminé au cinquième rang après sa défaite en finale de bronze face à Aubrey Genereux.

Charlie Thibault a été très expéditive dans son duel pour la médaille de bronze chez les moins de 63 kg. Thibault a rapidement immobilisé son adversaire Arianna Turkowsky, du Pérou, afin d’assurer sa place sur le podium.

Il y a aussi eu un duel tout canadien en finale de bronze des moins de 57 kg. La Britanno-Colombienne Carla Van Zyl a eu rendez-vous avec la Néo-Brunswickoise Hayden Thibeault. C’est finalement Van Zyl qui a eu le dessus, l’emportant par ippon, en immobilisant Thibeault au sol pendant 20 secondes. Hayden Thibeault termine donc au cinquième rang.

Katherine MacArthur (-44 kg) a également conclu la journée en cinquième place après sa défaite face à la Mexicaine Sofia Hernandez, tout comme Valeria Kostrovets chez les moins de 48 kg ainsi que Naomi Fowler (+70 kg).

Du côté masculin, Avery Pampolina (-50 kg) a subi la défaite à son premier combat de la journée, mais il a tout de même eu l’occasion de disputer la finale de bronze de sa catégorie. Il y a toutefois été battu par ippon par l’Argentin Benjamin Molina.

Finalement, Jean-David Bouchard n’a également pas été en mesure de trouver le chemin de la victoire en deux affrontements chez les plus de 90 kg.

Les Championnats panaméricains cadets et juniors se poursuivent mardi à Rio de Janeiro alors que ce sera au tour des athlètes juniors de prendre d’assaut les tatamis. Un total de 18 athlètes canadiens seront en action.

Gold for Lowan Le Bris, Seven Canadians on Podium

Montréal, April 22, 2024 – An impressive total of 13 Canadian athletes found themselves battling it out for medals on Monday at the Cadet Pan-American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ultimately, seven Canadians climbed onto the podium, led by Lowan Le Bris, gold medallist in the under-66 kg weight class.

In the big final, Le Bris needed extra time to vanquish Reiver Alvarenga Soto of Argentina. The British-Colombian finally secured the win 46 seconds into overtime by pinning his opponent to the floor.

To earn his spot in the final, Le Bris had defeated Leonel Martinez Ruiz of Mexico, Alfredo Valdivieso of Ecuador, and Tobias Vidal of Argentina in back-to-back bouts. His fight against Valivieso was especially tough, requiring three minutes of overtime.

“Lowan had a great day. He dominated every single one of his fights, and never seemed to be in any danger. His transitions were also great. He really impressed me. This was his first win at the cadet level, and I’m very proud of him. He really demonstrated his full potential,” said coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

In the under-90 kg final, Munkhu Batbayar faced Gelson Ricken of Brazil. Unfortunately, Batbayar received three penalties, thus losing the match and finishing in second place. Earlier, he had defeated Vladimir Manukyan of the USA to advance to the big final.

In the under-70 kg division, Charline Bourque also ended her day on the second step of the podium after bowing out to Maria Hottis of Brazil in the final. Trailing by only one point in the last minute of combat, Bourque made several attacks in an attempt to get onto the board. However, Hottis had the home country crowd on her side and managed to hold fast.

“Munkhu and Charline both fought Brazilians in the finals, in front of very noisy crowds. That wasn’t easy for them. But they both looked great, and they have a lot to be proud of today,” added Mehmedovic.

In the same weight class, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele won a bronze medal thanks to her dazzling victory over Victoria Ramirez Peguero of the Dominican Republic.

In the under-52 kg category, Mélody Grenier also captured a bronze medal. The athlete from the Boucherville Judo Club had earlier won her first match of the day against Stefany Salinas of Paraguay, before losing to Aubrey Genereux of the USA in the next round.

In the same weight category, Isla Diesmos finished fifth after losing to Genereux in the bronze medal final.

Charlie Thibault made quick work of clinching a bronze medal in the under-63 kg division, rapidly immobilizing her opponent Arianna Turkowsky of Peru to secure her spot on the podium.

In the under-57 kg category, an all-Canadian showdown took place in the bronze medal final, where Carla Van Zyl of British Columbia faced off against Hayden Thibeault of New Brunswick. Van Zyl ultimately prevailed after immobilizing Thibeault on the floor for 20 seconds to score an ippon. Thibeault finished fifth.

Katherine MacArthur (-44 kg) also finished fifth after losing to Sofia Hernandez of Mexico. Valeria Kostrovets (-48 kg) and Naomi Fowler (+70 kg) did likewise.

On the men’s side, although Avery Pampolina (-50 kg) lost his first bout of the day, he was able to fight for a bronze medal in his weight class. However, he was defeated by Benjamin Molina of Argentina, who won by ippon.

In the over-90 kg category, Jean-David Bouchard was winless in his two bouts of the day.

The Cadet and Junior Pan-American Championships will continue on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro, where the junior athletes will hit the tatamis. A total of 18 Canadians will be in action.
