Médaillé d’argent, John Jr Messé A Bessong se bute à un rival coriace

Montréal, 2 juin 2024 – Une semaine exactement après avoir défendu son titre de champion canadien des plus de 100 kg, John Jr Messé A Bessong était déterminé à poursuivre sur sa lancée à la Coupe européenne junior de Graz, en Autriche. Il a cependant vu sa séquence prendre fin dimanche, en grande finale de sa catégorie, contre un adversaire bien connu : l’Azéri Kanan Nasibov.

Tout comme lors de leurs deux derniers duels, ce sont les pénalités qui ont permis au représentant de l’Azerbaïdjan de l’emporter, cette fois après deux minutes de combat.

« Cette défaite en finale a été difficile à avaler. (Kanan) Nasibov connait bien les faiblesses de John et il trouve toujours une manière de capitaliser. Les deux se connaissent très bien et ils se sont déjà affrontés souvent, mais John n’a jamais encore eu le dessus. C’est frustrant pour lui », a avoué l’entraîneur national Sasha Mehmedovic au terme du tournoi.

Bien préparé pour l’occasion, Messé A Bessong a amorcé le combat en force, lançant les premières attaques, sans toutefois être en mesure de marquer. Le vent a ensuite changé de côté lorsque le Québécois a reçu un premier shido et il n’a jamais été en mesure de revenir dans le coup, devant s’avouer vaincu quelques instants plus tard en raison de deux autres fautes.

« John a très bien suivi le plan de match en commençant et il dominait, surtout avec sa prise, a analysé l’entraîneur. Malheureusement, sa première pénalité lui a fait perdre sa concentration et son adversaire en a profité. »

Plus tôt dans la journée, Messé A Bessong avait battu coup sur coup le Turc Tunahan Tutar, l’Israélien Maor Klein et le Géorgien Saba Kardava par ippon pour atteindre la grande finale de sa catégorie.

« C’est dommage pour la défaite, mais on a quand même pu voir une très belle progression dans son judo aujourd’hui (dimanche). C’est très encourageant et il continue d’apprendre. Il va certainement rencontrer cet adversaire prochainement, peut-être même aux mondiaux juniors, et il sera encore mieux préparé », a ajouté Mehmedovic.

Seule autre Canadienne à obtenir un classement dimanche, Heidi Quach a de son côté fini septième chez les moins de 48 kg. Elle s’est d’abord inclinée par ippon contre l’éventuelle médaillée d’or, la Japonaise Mitsuki Kondo, avant de rebondir au repêchage en l’emportant contre la Brésilienne Mariana Nunes grâce à une projection.

Son parcours s’est toutefois conclu quelques minutes plus tard, à la suite d’un revers par ippon face à la Hongroise Szabina Szeleczki. Cette dernière a par la suite poursuivi sa route pour remporter une médaille de bronze.

« Heidi avait un tableau difficile ! Ce sont des choses qui arrivent et, malgré tout, elle a très bien fait. Elle s’est bien ressaisie après son revers contre la Japonaise et elle a livré un autre bon combat contre la Hongroise. Tout comme John, elle va devoir s’adapter à la pression contre ce genre d’adversaire, mais elle ressortira de cette compétition mieux outillée pour la suite », a conclu Sasha Mehmedovic.

Aussi inscrite chez les moins de 48 kg, Marie-Lune Turmel n’a pu trouver le chemin de la victoire en deux sorties sur les tatamis. Inara Bardai (-57 kg), Ryan Belal (+100 kg) et Yury Semenuyk (-81 kg) ont connu une journée similaire, subissant l’élimination dès le premier tour, tout comme Luke Thompson chez les moins de 66 kg samedi.

Notons qu’Evelyn Beaton a de son côté bouclé la compétition avec une victoire et deux défaites chez les moins de 52 kg.

Yanis Hachemi s’illustre à Marrakech

À l’image de son coéquipier John Jr Messé A Bessong, Yanis Hachemi s’est lui aussi démarqué au cours du week-end en montant sur la deuxième marche du podium à l’Open africain de Marrakech, au Maroc.

En action samedi chez les moins de 73 kg, le champion canadien senior de la catégorie a signé trois victoires rapides, dont deux par waza-ari, afin de filer en grande finale pour y affronter le Français Benjamin Axus.

Celui-ci est cependant venu mettre un terme à la séquence du Québécois en signant un gain par ippon dans la toute dernière minute du temps réglementaire. Il s’agit d’une deuxième médaille d’argent en Open continental pour Yanis Hachemi qui avait aussi terminé deuxième à Santiago, au Chili, en juin 2023.

L’athlète de 21 ans prendra maintenant la direction de l’Espagne, où il participera à l’Open européen de Madrid, la fin de semaine prochaine. Laurence Biron (-63 kg), Tylor Collin (- 60 kg), Olivier Gagnon (-73 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg) et Mohab ElNahas (-90 kg) seront les autres Canadiens en lice pour cette compétition qui se déroulera sur deux jours.

John Jr. Messé A Bessong Takes Silver Against Tough Opponent

Montréal, June 2, 2024 – Exactly one week after he defended his title of Canadian champion in the over-100 kg weight category, John Jr. Messé A Bessong was intent on achieving a similar result at the Junior European Cup in Graz, Austria. However, his winning streak came to an end on Sunday in the big final, against a familiar opponent: Kanan Nasibov of Azerbaijan.

As was also the case in their last two matches, Nasibov prevailed on penalties, this time after two minutes of combat.

“That loss in the final was a tough pill to swallow. Nasibov knows John’s weak points, and he always finds a way to use them to his advantage. The two of them know each other well, and they’ve fought each other often, but John has never beaten him. It’s frustrating for him,” said national coach Sasha Mehmedovic, following the tournament.

Messé A Bessong, who was well-prepared for the match, got off to a good start by making several attacks, although he did not succeed in scoring any points. However, things soured for the Québécois when he received a shido, and he was never able to fully recover. He had to concede defeat a few moments later, after making two further errors.

“Early on, John stuck to his game plan well and dominated the match, especially with his grip,” explained the coach. “Unfortunately, after he received his first penalty, he lost his focus, and his opponent took advantage of that.” 

Earlier in the day, Messé A Bessong had defeated Tunahan Tutar of Turkey, Maor Klein of Israel, and Saba Kardava of Georgia by ippon in back-to-back bouts to advance to the big final in his category.

“The loss was unfortunate, but we witnessed some great progress in his judo today [Sunday]. It’s very encouraging, and he’s still learning. He’ll definitely encounter that opponent again soon, possibly even at the World Juniors, and he’ll be even better prepared next time,” added Mehmedovic.

Heidi Quach, the only other Canadian to rank on Sunday, finished seventh in the under-48 kg division. Following an initial loss to Mitsuki Kondo of Japan, who later won the gold medal, she bounced back in the repechage, throwing her opponent Mariana Nunes of Brazil to clinch the win.

However, her day came to an end just a few moments later, when Szabina Szeleczki of Hungary defeated her by ippon. Szeleczki went on to win a bronze medal.

“Heidi had a tough draw today! But these things happen. She did well, despite everything. She recovered well after losing to [Kondo], and she fought well against the Hungarian. Like John, she’ll have to learn to cope with the pressure of fighting that kind of opponent, but she’ll come out of this better equipped for the next time,” concluded Mehmedovic.

Also in the under-48 kg category, Marie-Lune Turmel finished the day with a 0-2 record. Inara Bardai (-57 kg), Ryan Belal (+100 kg), and Yury Semenuyk (-81 kg) were all eliminated in the first round, as was Luke Thompson in the under-66 kg category on Saturday.

Evelyn Beaton finished the tournament with a record of one win and two losses in the under-52 kg division.

Yanis Hachemi shines in Marrakesh

Like his teammate Messé A Bessong, Yanis Hachemi also made his mark on the weekend, taking second place at the African Open in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The Canadian senior under-73 kg champion posted three quick wins today, including two by waza-ari, to advance to the big final, where he faced Benjamin Axus of France.

Axus put an end to the Québécois’ winning streak, however, when he scored an ippon in the final minute of regulation time. This was the Hachemi’s second silver medal at a Continental Open. He also finished second in Santiago, Chile, in June 2023.

The 21-year-old will now head to Spain, where he will compete in the European Open in Madrid next weekend. Laurence Biron (-63 kg), Tylor Collin (- 60 kg), Olivier Gagnon (-73 kg), David Popovici (-81 kg), and Mohab ElNahas (-90 kg) will also take part in the two-day tournament.
