Judo Canada – Open européen de Prague
Montréal, 29 septembre 2024 – L’Ontarien Keagan Young s’est couvert d’or en grande finale des moins de 81 kg à l’Open européen de judo de Prague, dimanche, en Tchéquie. À son dernier duel du jour, l’athlète de 23 ans a eu raison du Néerlandais Mo Van Dun, par ippon, en moins de 2 minutes.
Il s’agit d’une deuxième médaille canadienne dans la capitale tchèque après celle de bronze obtenue par la Britanno-Colombienne Isabelle Harris, samedi, chez les moins de 63 kg.
« Si je peux me le permettre, il a fait une journée près de la perfection », a lancé tout de go l’entraîneur Antoine Bouchard. « Dans le passé, Keagan avait parfois tendance à ne pas nécessairement respecter le plan de match, mais aujourd’hui (dimanche), il l’a suivi à la lettre. Il a été patient et a profité de toutes les occasions qui se sont présentées à lui. C’est vraiment une excellente journée ! »
Et pour ajouter du lustre à ce parcours, Young a remporté ses cinq combats par ippon.
« En finale, Keagan a été patient et il a évité d’aller au sol. Quand il a vu l’occasion de faire sa grosse attaque, il en a profité pour l’emporter. […] Après cette performance, il a démontré qu’il est prêt à passer à l’étape suivante et s’il garde le même état d’esprit, il sera très dangereux sur la scène internationale », a poursuivi l’entraîneur.
Il s’agit d’un retour au sommet pour le combattant qui avait été médaillé de bronze aux Jeux olympiques de la jeunesse (2018) et aux Championnats du monde cadets (2017). Après ces succès, le judoka avait ensuite connu une baisse de régime sur la scène internationale pour différentes raisons, dont un changement de catégorie de poids et une grave blessure à un poignet. Tout cela est aujourd’hui derrière lui confirme Bouchard.
« On le voit à l’entraînement qu’il est plein de potentiel et aujourd’hui (dimanche), il l’a vraiment démontré. Il est capable de faire des choses inimaginables. C’est un premier pas vers de plus grandes choses. »
En action dans cette même catégorie, David Popovici (Québec) a conclu sa journée avec une fiche de 2 victoires et 1 défaite et n’a pas obtenu de classement.
« Il dominait à son dernier combat et il n’en manquait pas beaucoup pour que son adversaire prenne une troisième pénalité. Malheureusement, il a voulu en faire trop et l’autre en a profité pour le contrer. »
Dans le tableau des moins de 90 kg, Guillaume Gaulin (Québec) et Mohab Elnahas (Ontario) ont tous les deux perdu leur premier affrontement par ippon après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour.

“Nearly Perfect” Keagan Young Captures Gold
Montréal, September 29, 2024 – Ontario’s Keagan Young struck gold in the under-81 kg big final at the European Judo Open in Prague, Czech Republic, on Sunday. In his final match, the 23-year-old defeated Mo Van Dun of the Netherlands by ippon in less than two minutes.
It was Canada’s second medal in the Czech capital this weekend. British Columbia’s Isabelle Harris won bronze on Saturday in the under-63 kg division.
“If I may say so, [Keagan] was nearly perfect today,” said his coach, Antoine Bouchard. “In the past, he has sometimes strayed from the game plan, but today, he followed it to the letter. He was patient, and he took advantage of every opportunity that came his way. He truly had an excellent day!”
Furthermore, Young won all five of his bouts by ippon.
“In the final, Keagan remained patient, and he avoided the floor. When he saw an opportunity to make a major attack, he went for it, and he won. [. . .] With his performance today, he demonstrated that he’s ready to take the next step, and if he keeps the same mindset, he’ll be very dangerous on the international scene,” added the coach.
For the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and 2017 Cadet World Championships bronze medallist, today’s win was a return to the top. Following those earlier achievements, however, the judoka hit a slump on the international scene for various reasons, including a change of weight category and a serious injury to his wrist. But all that is behind him now, affirmed Bouchard.
“When he trains, we can see that he’s got great potential, and today, he demonstrated it clearly. He’s capable of incredible things. This is a first step toward even bigger things.”
In the same weight category, David Popovici (Quebec) ended the day with two wins and one loss, and did not rank.
“[David] dominated his last match, and his opponent very nearly received a third penalty. But unfortunately, [David] tried a little too hard, and his opponent succeeded in countering him.”
In the under-90 kg division, Guillaume Gaulin (Quebec) and Mohab ElNahas (Ontario) lost their first fights of the day after having received first-round byes.
