Montréal, 26 avril 2025 – Après une prolifique première journée de compétition aux Championnats panaméricains et océaniens où le Canada a récolté quatre médailles, deux autres représentants de l’unifolié sont montés sur des podiums samedi, à Santiago, au Chili.

Keagan Young (-81 kg) et Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) ont tous les deux atteint la finale de leur catégorie respective, s’inclinant toutefois lors de cet ultime duel pour terminer la journée avec des médailles d’argent.

Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) avait mené la charge la veille pour la troupe canadienne avec une médaille d’or alors que Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) s’était décorée d’argent. Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) et Yanis Hachemi (-73 kg) étaient montés sur la troisième marche du podium.

En finale chez les moins de 81 kg, Young avait rendez-vous avec le Brésilien Gabriel Falcao. L’Ontarien a été le premier à s’inscrire au pointage dès les premiers instants de l’affrontement grâce à un yuko. Son adversaire n’a toutefois pas baissé les bras et a été en mesure de revenir de l’arrière en marquant un ippon avec moins d’une minute à faire au temps réglementaire.

« Il a été très fort en début de combat et a été capable de marquer rapidement, mais il s’est malheureusement fait projeter par la suite. Je suis content parce que c’est sa première médaille aux Championnats panaméricains, mais je sais qu’il aurait voulu finir sur la plus haute marche du podium ! Je le vois travailler tous les jours, je sais qu’il est un candidat à la médaille d’or à chacune de ses sorties », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Young avait auparavant été parfait en trois duels pour atteindre la finale. Il a eu raison du Cubain Ruben Romero, de l’Américain Johan Silot et du Mexicain Gilberto Cardoso en début de journée.

Également en action chez les moins de 81 kg, David Popovici a remporté son combat de premier tour face à Alexis Harrison Ayarza, du Panama, avant de s’incliner à son affrontement suivant devant L’Argentin Agustin Gil.

Coralie Godbout a elle aussi remporté la première médaille de sa carrière aux Championnats panaméricains seniors samedi. Elle a mis la main sur la médaille d’argent des moins de 78 kg après avoir subi la défaite en finale face à la Colombienne Brenda Olaya.

Pour atteindre l’ultime duel, Godbout a battu la Brésilienne Beatriz Freitas ainsi que la Péruvienne Camila Figueroa. Ces deux duels se sont soldés en prolongation.

« Je suis très heureux pour Coralie, c’est toujours stressant de se battre pour une médaille pour la première fois aux Championnats panaméricains et je crois qu’elle a bien réagi. C’était très serré en finale, ça s’est joué à pas grand-chose. Elle a démontré de belles choses aujourd’hui, et n’a pas paniqué lorsque les combats s’allongeaient », a mentionné Valois-Fortier.

Également en action samedi, à Santiago, Guillaume Gaulin a atteint le repêchage dans le tableau des moins de 90 kg. Il a subi la défaite face à l’Américain John Jayne, éventuel médaillé de bronze, et a pris le septième rang. Dans la même catégorie, Mohab ElNahas a été limité à un seul combat.

Chez les plus de 78 kg, Marianna Karas a été vaincue lors de ses deux combats de la journée.

Canada adds two more medals to medal haul in Santiago

Montréal, April 26, 2025 – After a successful first day of competitions at the Panamerican and Oceania Championships where Team Canada collectively earned four medals, Canuck judokas added two more medals to the overall haul, Saturday, in Santiago, Chile.

Keagan Young (-81 kg) and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) both reached the finals in their respective categories, but lost their final duels. No tears were shed though, as both athletes will take home silver medals.

Recall that yesterday, Friday, Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) led the charge for Team Canada with her gold medal, while Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63kg) earned herself a silver. Both Julien Frascadore (66 kg) and Yanis Hachemi (-73 kg) took third place, and bronze medals.

In the –81 kg final, Keagan Young took to the tatami against Brazil’s Gabriel Falcao. The Ontarian was first on the scoreboard in the opening moments of the bout with a yuko. His opponent proved tenacious however, and was able to come back with an ippon with less than a minute to go in regulation time.

“He (Keagan) was very strong at the start of the bout, and was able to score quickly, but unfortunately, he was a little thrown off afterwards. I’m happy because it’s his first medal at the Panamerican Championships, but I know he would have liked to finish on the top step of the podium, naturally. I see him hard at work every day, and I know he’s a gold medal contender every time he goes out,” commented Team Canadian Coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

In order to reach the finals, Young had had three victories, defeating Cuban Ruben Romero, American Johan Silot, and Mexican Gilberto Cardoso earlier in the day.

In action in the -81kg category, David Popovici won his first-round bout against Panama’s Alexis Harrison Ayarza, before losing his next bout to Argentina’s Agustin Gil.

Coralie Godbout also won the first medal of her career Saturday at the Panamerican Senior Championships. She took silver in the -78 kg category after losing to Colombia’s Brenda Olaya in the final. To reach that silver however, she first had to get the better of Brazil’s Beatriz Freitas and Peru’s Camila Figueroa. Both of the latter matches went to overtime.

“I’m very happy for Coralie, it’s always stressful to fight for a medal for the first time at the Panamerican Championships, and I think she reacted well. It was very close in the final, it didn’t come down to much. She showed great things today, and didn’t panic when the bouts got longer,” mentioned Valois-Fortier.

Also in action on Saturday in Santiago, Guillaume Gaulin reached the repechage in the -90 kg division. He suffered a defeat at the hands of eventual bronze medallist John Jayne (USA), and ended his day in seventh place. In the same weight class, Mohab ElNahas was halted after a single bout on the tatami.

In the +78 kg category, Marianna Karas was defeated in both her bouts Saturday.
