Montréal, 6 juillet 2025 – John Jr Messé A Bessong a démontré l’étendue de son talent dimanche, à la Coupe européenne junior de Prague, en Tchéquie, sa première compétition continentale depuis novembre 2024. Défait par l’éventuel médaillé d’or en quarts de finale, le Québécois n’a pas baissé les bras et est finalement monter sur la troisième marche du podium chez les plus de 100 kg.

En finale de bronze, Messé A Bessong a eu raison du Brésilien Andrey Coelho, adversaire qu’il avait déjà affronté à plusieurs reprises par le passé. Le Canadien a marqué un waza-ari tôt dans l’affrontement et a été en mesure de contenir les attaques de son adversaire pour s’emparer de la médaille de bronze.

« Je suis super content de mon résultat, ça fait du bien de remporter une médaille de bronze dans une compétition face aux meilleurs juniors au monde, même après un long moment d’absence. J’appréhendais le combat contre le Brésilien, je ne voulais pas y aller à fond dès le départ, j’y suis allé avec de la technique et ç’a fonctionné », a raconté John Jr Messé A Bessong.

Messé A Bessong a remporté son premier combat de la journée face au Tchèque Martin Truhlar, avant d’ensuite baisser pavillon devant le Géorgien Giorgi Baduashvili. L’athlète de 20 ans n’a toutefois pas baissé les bras et s’est tourné vers le repêchage où il a vaincu le Kazakh Sherkhan Alpanov en un peu plus d’une minute.

« J’ai rapidement voulu oublier ma défaite et faire comme si c’était une nouvelle journée qui commençait avec le repêchage. Je me suis concentré sur la médaille de bronze comme si c’était une médaille d’or pour moi et tout a bien fonctionné. »

Son adversaire suivant, le Sud-Coréen Minjun Kim ne s’est pas présenté au combat, ayant été victime d’une blessure lors de son combat précédent. Messé A Bessong est donc directement passé en finale de bronze.

Également en action du côté masculin, Artem Neyolov (-81 kg) a remporté son premier combat face à l’Américain Evan Miller. Il a toutefois subi la défaite à son combat suivant, et n’a pas été en mesure de se reprendre au repêchage.

Quant à lui, Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) a été défait à ses deux combats du jour.

De son côté, Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg) a également été en mesure d’atteindre la finale de bronze de sa catégorie. La Britanno-Colombienne, qui est en a sa première année officielle chez les juniors s’est inclinée lors de cet ultime duel face à la Slovène Jevgenija Gajic afin de prendre le cinquième rang.

« C’était un peu décevant comme dernier combat. Je voulais tout laisser sur les tatamis pour repartir avec une médaille, mais ça n’a pas tourné en ma faveur. Je vais continuer à travailler fort dans le futur, notamment pour m’adapter pendant les combats. Je sais que je suis capable d’aller chercher des médailles et c’est mon objectif de le faire », a indiqué Carla Van Zyl.

La journée de Van Zyl avait commencé avec deux victoires convaincantes face à l’Autrichienne Marlene Schinwald, puis contre l’Ouzbek Raykhona Mamatova. Elle a ensuite plié l’échine lors des demi-finales, face à l’éventuelle médaillée d’or, la Japonaise Asuka Ueno.

« J’étais prête et bien préparée dès le début de la journée, les deux premiers combats se sont super bien passés. Je savais que ce ne serait pas facile contre la Japonaise, elle est très, très forte. J’ai eu quelques bons moments, mais elle m’a surprise et elle a terminé le travail. »

Dans la même catégorie que Van Zyl, Laurence Gagnon a remis une fiche de deux victoires et deux défaites, alors que chez les moins de 48 kg, Ekaterina Danilkov a perdu ses deux combats de la journée.

Les athlètes canadiens présents à Prague profiteront d’un camp d’entraînement au cours de la prochaine semaine avant de prendre part à la Coupe européenne de Paks, en Hongrie, le week-end prochain.

John Jr. Messé A Bessong Reaches Podium on Comeback

Montréal, July 6, 2025 – John Jr Messé A Bessong showcased the full extent of his talent at the Junior European Cup in Prague, Czech Republic, on Sunday, in his first continental competition since November 2024. And although the Québécois was defeated in the quarter-finals by the future gold medallist, he kept his chin up, ultimately claiming the third spot on the podium in the over-100 kg weight category.

In the bronze medal final, Messé A Bessong ousted Brazil’s Andrey Coelho, an opponent he has faced on multiple occasions in the past. After scoring a waza-ari early in the match, the Canadian succeeded in containing Coelho’s attacks throughout regulation time to capture the bronze medal.

“I’m really happy with my result. It feels great to win a bronze medal in a competition against the best junior athletes in the world, especially after such a long absence. I was a bit apprehensive about fighting Coelho. I didn’t want to push too hard too quickly. So I tried a more technical approach, and it worked,” said Messé A Bessong.

Messé A Bessong defeated Martin Truhlar of the Czech Republic in his first bout of the day, before bowing out to Giorgi Baduashvili of Georgia. In the repechage, the 20-year-old kept pushing forward, eliminating Sherkhan Alpanov of Kazakhstan in just over a minute.

“I wanted to quickly put the loss behind me and go into the repechage as though it were a brand new day. I focused on the bronze medal as though it were gold, and it all worked out.” 

Messé A Bessong’s next opponent, Minjun Kim of South Korea, withdrew from the match due to an injury in his previous bout, so Messé A Bessong advanced straight to the bronze medal final.

Also in the men’s tournament, Artem Neyolov (-81 kg) ousted Evan Miller of the USA in his first bout of the day. However, he lost his subsequent match and was unable to bounce back in the repechage.

Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) lost both his fights today.

On the women’s side, Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg) also advanced to the bronze medal final in her weight class. In that match, the British Columbian, who this year is now officially competing as a junior, bowed out to Jevgenija Gajic of Slovenia and finished fifth.

“As far as final matches go, it was a bit of a let-down. I wanted to leave everything on the tatamis and win a medal, but things didn’t go my way. So I’m going to keep working hard, especially on being able to adapt during fights. I know I could win medals, and my goal is to do so,” said Van Zyl.

Van Zyl’s day began with two decisive victories over Marlene Schinwald of Austria and Raykhona Mamatova of Uzbekistan. In the semi-final, however, she bowed out to Japan’s Asuka Ueno, who later won the gold medal.

“As the day got off to a start, I felt ready and well-prepared, and my first two matches went really well. But I knew Ueno would be tough to beat. She’s very, very strong. I made a few good moves, but she caught me off guard and finished the job.” 

In the same weight division as Van Zyl, Laurence Gagnon ended the day with a record of two wins and two losses, while in the under-48 kg group, Ekaterina Danilkov lost her two only fights of the day.

The Canadians who competed in Prague this weekend will spend the next few days in training camp, preparing for the Paks European Cup in Hungary next weekend.
