Montréal, 12 juillet 2025 – Après une performance en deçà de ses attentes la semaine dernière à Prague, Catherine Toshkov a travaillé d’arrache-pied pour s’assurer d’arriver au sommet de sa forme à la Coupe européenne de Paks, en Hongrie. La stratégie a été payante pour la Québécoise qui a remporté une médaille de bronze chez les moins de 63 kg, samedi.

Toshkov a été expéditive lors de son combat ultime, n’ayant besoin que de 10 secondes pour venir à bout de la Serbe Jelena Nisavic, afin d’assurer sa place sur le podium.

« Je suis vraiment satisfaite ! J’avais un peu étudié son style avant la finale et j’ai pu élaborer un plan avec mon entraîneur pour la contrer. J’étais bien préparé pour ce combat et, dès la première séquence, j’ai vu l’opportunité d’effectuer un Ippon-seoi-nage, ma technique préférée, et j’ai gagné. Ça s’est passé plus vite que ce que je pensais ! » a raconté Catherine Toshkov.

« Ça fait vraiment du bien de quitter Paks avec une médaille. Le camp d’entraînement entre les deux compétitions a été positif, ça m’a vraiment bien préparé à affronter des adversaires de haut niveau », a-t-elle renchéri.

L’athlète de 19 ans avait amorcé sa journée avec deux victoires consécutives face à la Finlandaise Riina Myllyla et l’Ouzbek Sarvinoz Xusanova, avant de baisser pavillon devant l’Ukrainienne Ilariia Tsurkan, éventuelle médaillée d’argent de la catégorie, au terme d’un duel marathon de plus de 10 minutes.

« Ç’a été difficile comme début de journée, mais je suis restée concentrée tout au long des combats, particulièrement pendant le premier qui s’est terminé en prolongation. Pendant le deuxième, je me suis fait marquer un yuko rapidement, mais j’ai réussi un waza-ari ensuite. C’était une longue minute jusqu’à la fin du combat pour garder mon avance. »

« L’Ukrainienne est gauchère, j’ai eu un peu de difficulté à effectuer mes techniques et j’ai été pénalisé à cause de ça. C’était serré, je ne suis pas déçue de mon combat parce que j’ai tout donné. C’est de l’apprentissage et j’ai rapidement voulu me concentrer mes combats suivants », a ajouté Toshkov.

Catherine Toshkov n’a effectivement pas baissé les bras après cette défaite en se tournant vers le repêchage où elle a été en mesure de vaincre l’Allemande Sara-Tamar Wolsfeld ainsi qu’Ivette Fuentes, du Vénézuéla, afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale de bronze.

Dans la même catégorie que Toshkov, Loika Robertson et Maia Thomson ont été limitées à un seul combat, tout comme Charlie Thibault, chez les moins de 70 kg.

Du côté masculin, Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg) a connu la meilleure journée chez les athlètes canadiens, lui qui a remis une fiche de trois victoires et deux défaites, sans toutefois être en mesure d’obtenir de classement.

Le Britanno-Colombien a remporté son premier combat de la journée face au Hongrois Levente Raffay, avant d’être vaincu par l’athlète neutre Timur Davidov, éventuel médaillé de bronze.

Au repêchage, Le Bris a remporté ses deux premiers combats avant de s’incliner devant l’Ouzbek Muhriddin Marufov, qui a lui aussi terminé sa journée sur la troisième marche du podium.

Dans le même tableau, Antoine Berteau a vaincu l’Américain Alexander Prado, mais a plié l’échine au tour suivant devant le Slovène Urh Ogrizek.

Chez les moins de 66 kg, Daniil Kremerman et Luke Thomson ont été vaincu à leur premier combat de la journée.

La Coupe européenne de Paks se poursuivra dimanche où Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Laurence Gagnon (-57 kg), Artem Neyolov (-81 kg), Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) et John Jr Messé A Bessong seront les Canadiens en action.

Catherine Toshkov Claims Third Step of Podium

Montréal, July 12, 2025 – Following a performance that fell short of her expectations last week in Prague, Catherine Toshkov worked hard to ensure she was in top form for the European Cup this weekend in Paks, Hungary. The Québécoise’s efforts paid off, as she clinched a bronze medal in the under-63 kg category on Saturday.

In her final bout, Toshkov swiftly dispatched of Serbia’s Jelena Nisavic, requiring only ten seconds to secure the win.

“I’m so happy! Before the final, I studied [Nisavic’s] style a bit, so my coach and I were able to come up with a game plan to beat her. I was well-prepared for the fight, and in the very first sequence, I was able to execute an Ippon-seoi-nage—my favourite technique—and I won. It happened even more quickly than I expected!” explained Toshkov.

“It feels great to be leaving Paks with a medal. The training camp that took place between the two competitions was helpful. It really prepared me to face high-level opponents,” she added.

The 19-year-old athlete began her day with two consecutive victories over Finland’s Riina Myllyla and Uzbekistan’s Sarvinoz Xusanova. She then lost to Ukraine’s Ilariia Tsurkan, who later won the category’s silver medal, at the end of a marathon match that lasted more than 10 minutes.

“The beginning of the day was tough, but I stayed focused throughout all my bouts, especially the first one, which went into overtime. In my second match, my opponent quickly scored a yuko, but I came back with a waza-ari not long afterward. The final minute felt long, as I tried to hold on to my lead.”

“Tsurkan is left-handed, so in my match against her, I had trouble with some of my techniques. Because of that, I received a penalty. It was a close fight. I’m not disappointed with the way I performed, because I gave it my all. It was a good learning experience, but I quickly wanted to turn my attention to my next bouts,” said Toshkov.

Toshkov did not let the loss get her down. She moved on to the repechage, where she ousted Sara-Tamar Wolsfeld of Germany and Ivette Fuentes of Venezuela to secure her spot in the bronze medal final.

In the same weight division as Toshkov, Loika Robertson and Maia Thomson were limited to one bout each. Charlie Thibault met the same fate in the under-70 kg category.

Among the Canadian men, Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg) obtained the day’s best result, finishing with three wins and two losses, although he did not rank.

The British Columbian defeated Hungary’s Levente Raffay in his first bout of the day, before losing to Neutral Athlete Timur Davidov, who later won bronze.

In the repechage, Le Bris won two matches in a row before bowing out to Uzbekistan’s Muhriddin Marufov, who ended the day with the other bronze medal.

In the same pool, Antoine Berteau edged out Alexander Prado of the USA before being vanquished by Urh Ogrizek of Slovenia in the next round.

In the under-66 kg weight division, Daniil Kremerman and Luke Thomson were both eliminated in their first fights of the day.

The European Cup will continue on Sunday. Canadians Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg), Laurence Gagnon (-57 kg), Artem Neyolov (-81 kg), Yehor Paladii (-100 kg), and John Jr Messé A Bessong will hit the tatamis in Paks.
