Une autre cinquième place pour le Canada aux mondiaux cadets

Montréal, 29 août 2025 – Lowan Le Bris a terminé cinquième chez les moins de 73 kg, vendredi, aux Championnats du monde cadets de Sofia, en Bulgarie. Le Bris termine au même rang que son compatriote Anes Mati, qui avait réussi l’exploit la veille chez les moins de 66 kg.

Le Britanno-Colombien s’est incliné par ippon en finale de bronze face au Géorgien Vasil Gamezardashivili.

« C’était un combat très serré et Lowan aurait pu gagner, mais malheureusement, il a été défait dans les dernières secondes du match. Je peux dire qu’il a clairement le niveau pour monter sur le podium dans ce genre d’événement », a affirmé son entraîneur Ewan Beaton.

« Il peut être fier de ce qu’il a accompli aujourd’hui ! » a-t-il ajouté.

En début de compétition, Le Bris a vaincu Dalaitseren Batbuyan, de la Mongolie, Stiliyan Babachev, de la Bulgarie et Sadulla Ravshanov, de l’Ouzbékistan. Il s’est ensuite incliné face au Serbe Veljko Varnicic en demi-finale avant de baisser pavillon en finale de bronze.

« Ses trois premiers combats étaient parfaits. Il a réussi à vaincre ses adversaires en moins d’une minute », a lancé Beaton.

Chez les moins de 81 kg, Tristan Bourque a remporté son premier combat face à Anas Bouqammaz, du Koweït. Au tour suivant, il s’est incliné face à l’athlète neutre Romazan Khidirov.

« Il a été très prudent lors de son premier combat et ça lui a permis de l’emporter. Malheureusement son adversaire a eu le dessus sur lui dans le combat suivant », a expliqué son entraîneur.

Du côté féminin, Maia Thomson (-63 kg) a remporté ses premiers combats face à la Brésilienne Anna Julia Sperling et contre l’Israélienne Mai Yermiahu. Elle s’est ensuite inclinée face à la Géorgienne Nana Gulbiani et a été défaite, au repêchage, par la Française Chloé Jean.

« Elle a été très bonne aujourd’hui et elle fait de l’excellent judo. Contrairement au style européen plus physique, Maia a un style de judo plus classique et malheureusement, ça lui a nui dans ses autres combats », a expliqué Beaton.

Dans la même catégorie que Thomson, Victoria Summers a subi la défaite dès son premier combat face à la Porto Ricaine Indy Arizmendi Nguyen.

Également en action vendredi, Myroslava Bondarenko (-57 kg) s’est inclinée à son premier combat face à l’Ouzbèke Gulsanam Khazratova.

Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg), Arthur Stivenson (+90 kg), Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg), Missy Jen Dorval Mbele (-70 kg), Charlie Thibault (-70 kg), Emiliya Aliyeva (+70 kg) et Abigail Smith (+70 kg) seront les athlètes canadiens en action samedi.

Another fifth for Canada at Cadet World Championships

Montréal, August 29, 2025 – Lowan Le Bris took fifth place in the Under 73 kg category Friday, at the World Championship for Cadets, taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria. Le Bris ended his day with the same ranking as teammate Anes Mati, who achieved the same feat in the Under 66 kg yesterday.

The British Columbian lost by ippon in the bronze medal match to Georgian judoka Vasil Gamezardashivili.

“It was a very close bout, and Lowan could have won it, but unfortunately he was defeated in the last few seconds. He clearly has the skills to make it to the podium in this type of event,” said Coach Ewan Beaton. “He can absolutely be proud of what he accomplished today.”

Early on in the competition, Le Bris could boast a string of defeated judokas in his wake: Dalaitseren Batbuyan of Mongolia, Stiliyan Babachev of Bulgaria, and Sadulla Ravshanov of Uzbekistan. However, the Canadian then lost to Serbia’s Veljko Varnicic in the semifinals, before facing defeat in the bronze medal match.

“His first three fights were perfect: he managed to defeat his opponents in less than a minute,” noted Beaton.

In the Under 81 kg category, Tristan Bourque won his first fight against Anas Bouqammaz of Kuwait. Yet the tide turned after that, and in the next round, he lost to neutral athlete Romazan Khidirov.

“He was very cautious on the tatami in his first bout, and that allowed him to win. Unfortunately, his opponent got the better of him in the fight after that,” explained his coach.

In women’s judo action, Maia Thomson (-63 kg) won her first bouts against Brazil’s Anna Julia Sperling and Israel’s Mai Yermiahu. She then suffered defeat at the hands of Georgia’s Nana Gulbiani, and was bested in the repechage by France’s Chloé Jean.

“She was very good today, and overall she does excellent judo. Unlike the more physical European style, Maia has a more classic style of judo, and unfortunately, that hurt her in her other matches,” explained Beaton.

In the same category as Thomson, Victoria Summers suffered defeat in her first bout against Puerto Rico’s Indy Arizmendi Nguyen.

Also in action on Friday, Myroslava Bondarenko (-57 kg) lost her first bout to Uzbekistan’s Gulsanam Khazratova.

Watch for more cadet judo excitement tomorrow from Sofia, Saturday, as Canadians Matthew Molchanov (-90 kg), Arthur Stivenson (+90 kg), Franck David Moussima Ewane Elouti (+90 kg), Missy Jen Dorval Mbele (-70 kg), Charlie Thibault (-70 kg), Emiliya Aliyeva (+70 kg) and Abigail Smith (+70 kg) all step on to the tatami to test their skills.
