Montréal, 7 octobre 2025 – Quatre athlètes du Canada étaient en action mardi lors de la dernière journée des compétitions individuelles aux Championnats du monde juniors de judo, à Lima, au Pérou. Si aucun représentant de l’unifolié n’a été en mesure de trouver le chemin de la victoire, l’entraîneur Antoine Bouchard a tout de même vu du positif de la part de ses jeunes judokas.

Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) est celui qui a démontré le plus de combativité mardi lors de son affrontement face au Roumain Bogdan Petre. Le Canadien a été le premier à s’inscrire à la marque grâce à un waza-ari, mais a ensuite été surpris par son adversaire qui a créé l’égalité.

En voulant reprendre l’avantage par la suite, Paladii a été contré et Petre a été en mesure de mettre fin au combat après un deuxième waza-ari.

« Yehor a réussi un beau waza-ari en début de combat pour marquer des points, mais il a ensuite pris des risques et s’est fait contrer deux fois. C’est une fin malheureuse dans son cas parce qu’il était bien en contrôle au tout début du combat », a commenté l’entraîneur Antoine Bouchard.

Également en action du côté masculin, John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) a lui aussi baissé pavillon à son premier combat qui l’opposait à l’athlète neutre Rustem Kadzaev, qui l’a emporté par ippon.

« Son adversaire était solide, ce n’était pas un combat facile pour commencer. Il a essayé de le projeter vers l’arrière, mais il n’était pas complètement en contrôle et Kadzev l’a contré pour la victoire. »

Du côté féminin, Emily Harris s’est inclinée face à la Brésilienne Dandara Camillo chez les moins de 78 kg, alors qu’Alisa Kofman (+78 kg) a subi un sort similaire contre la Lithuanienne Rugile Stasiulyte.

« Emily était notre plus jeune athlète cette semaine, elle est encore d’âge cadet et elle affrontait une excellente adversaire dès le départ. Elle retire du positif tout de même. Et du côté d’Alisa, elle s’est fait surprendre au sol et n’a pas été en mesure de se reprendre par la suite », a poursuivi le pilote canadien.

Le meilleur résultat individuel du Canada aux mondiaux juniors aura été la septième place de la Britanno-Colombienne Carla Van Zyl chez les moins de 57 kg dimanche. Antoine Bouchard voit d’ailleurs d’un bon œil l’expérience acquise par sa troupe lors de cette semaine au Pérou.

« Le résultat de Carla est évidemment le moment fort de notre semaine, mais je crois également que dans la défaite, plusieurs ont extrêmement bien paru. Ils ont offert de bons combats et plusieurs seront encore chez les juniors l’an prochain et on va vouloir bâtir là-dessus. Pour ceux qui passeront chez les seniors, ils ont connu une belle année malgré l’absence de victoires cette semaine aux mondiaux », a conclu Bouchard.

Les Championnats du monde juniors se termineront mercredi à Lima avec la présentation du concours par équipe où les Canadiens seront opposés aux athlètes neutres qui combattront sur la bannière de la Fédération internationale du judo.

A Wealth of Experience for Young Canadian Judokas

Montréal, October 7, 2025 – Four Canadian athletes were on Tuesday’s roster for the final day of individual competition at the Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru. And although none of them secured a win, coach Antoine Bouchard nevertheless views the day in a positive light.

Yehor Paladii (-100 kg) put up the toughest battle as he sought to dominate Bogdan Petre of Romania. Paladii opened the scoring with a waza-ari, but his opponent managed to even the score. When Paladii attempted to regain the upper hand, Petre succeeded in counter-attacking, putting an end to the match with a second waza-ari.

“Yehor got on the board first with a great waza-ari early in the match, but then he took a few risks and was countered twice. It’s unfortunate that it ended that way, because he was the one in control at the beginning of the bout,” said Bouchard.

Also in the men’s competition, John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) lost his first match of the day to Neutral Athlete Rustem Kadzaev, who won by ippon.

“[John] was up against a solid opponent. It wasn’t an easy opening bout for him. He tried to throw [Kadzaev] on his back, but he wasn’t in full control, and Kadzaev won via counter-attack.” 

On the women’s side, Emily Harris bowed out to Brazil’s Dandara Camillo in the under-78 kg category, while Alisa Kofman met a similar fate against Rugile Stasiulyte of Lithuania in the over-78 kg division.

“Emily is the youngest athlete here with us this week. She’s still in the cadet age group, and she was up against an excellent adversary in her first bout. Nevertheless, it was still a positive experience for her. As for Alisa, she was caught off-guard on the ground, and she wasn’t able to recover after that,” explained Bouchard.

Canada’s best individual result at this week’s Junior World Championships was that of British Columbian Carla Van Zyl, who finished seventh in the under-57 kg category on Sunday.

Bouchard takes a positive view of the experience gained by his team this week in Peru. “Carla’s result was obviously the highlight of our week, but I also believe that despite the defeats they faced, several of the others also performed very well. They fought hard, and several of them will still be in the junior age group next year, so we’ll be able to build on what we learned here. For those who are moving up to the senior level, they had a great year despite not winning this week at the World Championships,” he concluded.

The Junior World Championships will conclude on Wednesday in Lima with the team competition, where the Canadians will face Neutral Athletes competing under the banner of the International Judo Federation.
