Journée sans victoire à Qingdao

Montréal, 28 juin 2026 – Les trois Canadiens en action au jour 3 du Grand Prix de judo de Qingdao n’ont pas été en mesure de signer une victoire. Dimanche, en Chine, Kyle Reyes (-100 kg), John Messe A Bessong (+100 kg) et Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) ont tous été éliminés à leur premier duel.

« C’est une journée décevante sur toute la ligne. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de positif aujourd’hui », a laissé tomber l’entraîneur de l’équipe canadienne Antoine Valois-Fortier. « Ce sont trois combats que les athlètes auraient pu remporter, ce qui ajoute à la déception et qui laisse un goût amer. »

Dans le tableau des moins de 100 kg, l’Ontarien Kyle Reyes s’est buté au Russe et futur médaillé d’or, Adam Sangariev.

« C’était un tournoi de retour à la compétition pour lui après avoir été opéré au dos. Il devra retrouver ses repères », a reconnu Valois-Fortier à propos de Reyes.

Le vétéran de 32 ans pourra livrer de bons combats une fois qu’il aura retrouvé son rythme, croit l’entraîneur. « Il a encore de l’excellent judo en lui et le gros défi sera qu’il demeure en santé. Il est encore capable et surtout, il a encore le désir de performer. Il aura juste besoin d’un peu plus de temps. »

John Messe A Bessong a quant à lui perdu aux mains d’Emirkhan Zholdoshkaziev, du Kirghizistan. Les deux combattants s’étaient affrontés aux Championnats du monde cadets de 2022 et le Québécois avait alors eu le meilleur par ippon.

Dans le tableau féminin des -78 kg, Coralie Godbout s’est inclinée par yuko face à la Kazakhe Ekaterina Tokareva. Ce duel était une reprise d’un match de quart de finale du Grand Chelem du Kazakhstan, en mai dernier, où la Québécoise avait eu le meilleur dans son parcours qui l’avait menée vers une cinquième place.

Plusieurs membres de l’équipe canadienne senior seront au tournoi des Jeux du Commonwealth qui auront lieu à Glasgow, en Écosse, à compter du 23 juillet.

A Winless Day in Qingdao

Montréal, June 28, 2026 – None of the three Canadians competing at the Qingdao Grand Prix in China won a single match on day three of the event. Kyle Reyes (-100 kg), John Jr. Messé A Bessong (+100 kg), and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) were all eliminated in their first bouts of the day on Sunday.

“It was a disappointing day, right across the board. There aren’t many positives to draw from it,” said team Canada coach Antoine Valois-Fortier. “In all three of those bouts, our athletes could have won, which makes it all the more disappointing and leaves me with a bitter taste.” 

In the under-100 kg division, Kyle Reyes of Ontario found himself up against Adam Sangariev of Russia, who later went on to win the gold medal.

“This was [Kyle’s] first tournament after his back surgery, so he’ll need to find his footing again,” noted Valois-Fortier.

In the opinion of the coach, 32-year-old Reyes will amp up his performance once he gets back into the swing of things. “He still has some great judo left in him. His main challenge will be to stay healthy. He has what it takes, and he still has that drive to perform well. He just needs a bit more time.”

As for Messé A Bessong, he lost to Emirkhan Zholdoshkaziev of Kyrgyzstan, whom he had defeated by ippon when they last faced off at the 2022 Cadet World Championships.

In the women’s under-78 kg category, Godbout bowed out to Ekaterina Tokareva of Kazakhstan, who won by yuko. It was a rematch of the quarter-finals of the Kazakhstan Grand Slam this past May, where the Québécoise had come out on top and finished the day in fifth place.

Several members of the senior Canadian team will compete in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, beginning on July 23.
