Montréal, 22 août 2026 – Fort d’une médaille d’or au 3 m synchronisé la veille en compagnie de Kash Tarasoff, Samuel McCaffrey luttait pour une place sur le podium samedi, au 3 m individuel chez les 16-18 ans, aux Championnats du monde juniors de plongeon, à Rijeka, en Croatie.
Malheureusement pour lui, McCaffrey a raté son tout dernier plongeon de la journée. Déséquilibré sur le tremplin, le plongeur de Pointe-Claire a été forcé de sauter à pieds joints dans la piscine, mettant ainsi fin à ses espoirs de médaille.
« Je crois avoir été très constant dans mes premiers plongeons, en finale. J’ai travaillé très fort sur cet aspect dernièrement et je suis heureux de voir des résultats. Il va falloir que je retourne à la planche à dessin. Je me sentais en confiance avant mon dernier passage sur le tremplin, mais je ne sais pas trop ce qui s’est passé par la suite. J’étais beaucoup trop à droite et, si j’avais essayé de plonger, j’aurais pu tomber sur le côté de la piscine, je n’avais pas le choix d’y aller avec prudence. Je vais apprendre de cette expérience », a raconté Samuel McCaffrey, quelques instants après la finale.
Il a terminé la compétition au 12e rang avec une récolte de 225,50 points. La finale a été remportée par l’Allemand Finn Awe avec 359,20 points. Il a été accompagné sur le podium par le Russe Matvei Pomoshnikov et par le Fidjien Maori Pomeroy-Farrell.
McCaffrey avait pris le quatrième rang des qualifications en début de journée alors que son compatriote Arnaud Corbeil avait terminé en 17e place avec son total de 445,25 points.
« J’étais très fier et particulièrement heureux de mes qualifications. Je crois que c’est vraiment plus représentatif de ce dont je suis capable. Je crois que c’était très solide et que ça me donnait de la confiance pour la suite de la journée », a ajouté le Québécois.
Du côté féminin, Lila Gokiert (Calgary) et Ella Lindsay (Nepean-Ottawa) participaient à la finale de l’épreuve synchronisée à la plateforme de 10 m, chez les 14-18 ans. Les Canadiennes ont réalisé leur meilleur plongeon au deuxième tour avec une récolte de 46,20 points, le deuxième meilleur pointage de la manche, ce qui les plaçait provisoirement au huitième rang.
Elles ont glissé d’une place au tour suivant, mais ont été en mesure de conserver leur neuvième place au classement final, en vertu de leur total de 214,47.
Les Chinoises Yuehan Jiang et Qingcheng Yuan ont remporté l’or (317,28 points), devant les paires mexicaines (292,02) et russes (283,20).
Dimanche, Lila Stewart et Mackenzie-Mai Van Houtte-Cachero seront en action au tremplin de 1 m (16-18 ans) alors que Alistar Nisbet et Chase Shaw participeront à l’épreuve de la plateforme de 10 m (14-15 ans).

Samuel McCaffrey: In the Running Until the Very End
Montreal, August 22, 2026 – Fresh off his gold medal performance in the synchronized 3m event yesterday alongside Kash Tarasoff, Samuel McCaffrey was in contention for a spot on the podium in Saturday’s individual 3m springboard event (ages 16-18) at the Junior World Diving Championships in Rijeka, Croatia.
However, his final plunge of the day did not go as planned. The athlete from Pointe-Claire lost his balance on the board and was forced to jump feet-first into the water, thus putting an end to his medal hopes.
“I feel that my first few dives in the finals were very consistent. And I’ve been working hard on that aspect, so I was happy to see the results. But now I’ll have to go back to the drawing board. I felt confident going into my last dive, so I’m not really sure what happened. I was way too far over to the right, and if I had attempted the dive, I could have hit the side of the pool. I had no choice but to play it safe. It’s an experience I’ll learn from,” said McCaffrey, moments after the finals came to an end.
He thus finished twelfth overall, with a total of 225.50 points. The gold medal went to Finn Awe of Germany, whose final score was 359.20. Awe was accompanied on the podium by Matvei Pomoshnikov of Russia and Maori Pomeroy-Farrell of Fiji.
Earlier in the day, McCaffrey had placed fourth in the qualifiers, while his teammate Arnaud Corbeil had finished 17th with a score of 445.25.
“I felt very proud, and I was especially happy with my qualification rounds. I think they better reflect what I’m capable of. I think I was very solid, and I felt confident about the rest of the day,” said the Québécois.
On the girls’ side, Lila Gokiert (Calgary) and Ella Lindsay (Nepean-Ottawa) competed in the synchronized 10m platform finals (ages 14-18). The Canadians delivered their best dive of the day in the second heat, scoring 46.20 points—the second-highest score of the round—which placed them in provisional eighth place.
In the next round, however, they slipped down a spot, but were able to hold onto ninth place in the final standings, with a total score of 214.47.
China’s Yuehan Jiang and Qingcheng Yuan (317.28) captured the gold medal, ahead of the Mexicans (292.02) and the Russians (283.20).
On Sunday, Lila Stewart and Mackenzie-Mai Van Houtte-Cachero will take part in the girls’ 1m springboard competition (ages 16-18), while Alistar Nisbet and Chase Shaw compete in the boys’ 10m platform event (ages 14-15).
