Les athlètes cadets prennent le relais de belle façon

Montréal, 11 septembre 2026 – Après les solides prestations des athlètes juniors jeudi, les cadets de l’équipe canadienne ont pris le relais de belle façon, vendredi, à la Coupe panaméricaine de Saint-Domingue, en République dominicaine. Les porte-couleurs de l’unifolié ont conclu la journée avec une récolte de sept médailles, soit quatre d’or, une d’argent et deux de bronze.

Roman Semyrozum a poursuivi sa lancée alors qu’il a remporté l’or chez les moins de 66 kg. À son dernier duel du jour, le vice-champion du monde cadet de cette catégorie a vaincu le Costaricain Caleb Moya après avoir inscrit un deuxième waza-ari. Rappelons que la veille, le Québécois avait été décoré de la médaille d’argent au tournoi junior où les représentants du pays avaient balayé le podium dans ce tableau.

Aussi en action dans cette catégorie, l’Albertain Samuel Morrison s’est classé cinquième après sa défaite dans son combat pour le bronze contre le Costaricain Eithan Chacon.

Drake Gregory (Alberta) et Matthew Molchanov (Ontario) se sont affrontés pour la médaille d’or des moins de 90 kg et c’est Molchanov, médaillé de bronze aux récents Championnats du monde cadets, qui est sorti vainqueur par yuko au terme des 4 minutes réglementaires dans cette catégorie réduite à quatre participants.

Jeudi, Gregory et Molchanov avaient respectivement été médaillés d’argent et de bronze au tournoi junior.

L’Albertaine Finley Morasch est demeurée invaincue en trois affrontements qui ont tous été signés par ippon contre des Dominicaines chez les moins de 70 kg. Elle est montée sur la plus haute marche du podium.

Presley Tompkins, également de l’Alberta, est sortie gagnante du tableau à la ronde des moins de 63 kg grâce à sa victoire en finale par waza-ari contre l’Argentine Mariana Denise Mobilo qui l’avait vaincue par ippon en première ronde.

Alexander Li (Québec) et Grayson Tamura (Alberta) sont tous les deux montés sur la troisième marche du podium des moins de 55 kg. À leur dernier combat, Li a défait le Dominicain Emmanuel Cuevas Segura tandis que Tamura a eu raison du Paraguéen Giovanni Paciello.

Brooklyn Seeman, de l’Alberta, a quant à elle fini cinquième dans la catégorie des moins de 52 kg.

Après les juniors et les cadets, ce sera au tour des athlètes seniors de combattre à Saint-Domingue où 13 femmes et 17 hommes représenteront le Canada sur les tatamis.

Courte sortie de Julien Frascadore à Budapest

Toujours vendredi, en Hongrie cette fois, Julien Frascadore était le seul représentant du pays à combattre au Grand Chelem de Budapest. Le Québécois a été défait à son premier affrontement du tableau des moins de 66 kg alors qu’il a été vaincu par le Hongrois et favori local, Bence Pongracz, qui a signé l’ippon. Il n’a pas obtenu de classement.

L’action reprendra samedi et Justin Lemire (-73 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) et Laurence Biron (-63 kg) combattront.

Judo Canada – Cadet Panamerican Cup and Grand Slam

Cadet Judokas take the reins at Panamerican Cup 

Montréal, September 11, 2026 – Following Thursday’s strong performances from junior athletes, the Canadian cadet team picked up the torch in fine style Friday at the Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Canadian judokas brought the day to a close with a total of seven medals: four gold, one silver, and two bronze.

Roman Semyrozum continued yesterday’s winning ways with a gold in the Under 66 kg division. Semyrozym, the World Cadet vice-champion in this weight class, defeated Costa Rica’s Caleb Moya with a second waza-ari in his final bout of the day. It’s worth noting that the day before, the Québec based athlete won the silver medal at the junior tournament, where Team Canada swept the podium in that weight class.

Competing in the same weight class, Alberta’s Samuel Morrison finished fifth, after facing defeat in the bronze-medal match at the hands of Eithan Chacon (Costa Rica).

It was an all-Canadian showdown in the Under 90 kg division, which had been reduced to four competitors by the time the final round took place. Drake Gregory (Alberta) and Matthew Molchanov (Ontario) faced off for the gold medal, but in the end, it was Molchanov—a bronze medalist at the recent Cadet World Championships—who emerged victorious with a yuko scored just in time, at the end of the regulation four minutes.  

Thursday, both Gregory and Molchanov were medallists in the junior tournament – winning silver and bronze, respectively,

Alberta’s Finley Morasch had a wonderfully successful day in the Under-70-kg division, having been undefeated in three matches, all of which ended in ippon victories over Dominican opponents. It goes without saying that Morasch claimed the gold, and top spot on the podium. 

Fellow Albertan Presley Tompkins emerged victorious from the round-robin bracket in the Under 63 kg division owing to her waza-ari victory in the final against Mariana Denise Mobilo (Argentina), who had defeated her by ippon in the first round.

Alexander Li (Québec) and Grayson Tamura (Alberta) each claimed third place in the Under 55 kg division. In their final matches on the tatami, Li defeated Emmanuel Cuevas Segura (Dominican Republic), while Tamura defeated Giovanni Paciello (Paraguay).

Brooklyn Seeman (Alberta), finished fifth in the Under 52 kg category.

Thirteen women and seventeen men will represent Canada on the tatami for senior judo competitions in Santo Domingo once cadet judo action wraps up, and now that junior competitions have come to a close.

Julien Frascadore’s Short Run in Budapest

Over in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday, Julien Frascadore was Canada’s only representative at the Budapest Grand Slam. The Québec judoka was unfortunately defeated in his first match in the Under 66-kg bracket by Hungarian and local favorite Bence Pongracz, who scored an ippon. Frascadore did not place.

More judo action is in store on Saturday! Justin Lemire (-73 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg), and Laurence Biron (-63 kg) are all set to step onto the tatami and test their mettle. Stay tuned for more results and excitement.
