Une autre journée réussie à Saint-Domingue

Communiqué

Judo Canada

Another Successful Day in Santo Domingo

Montréal, September 12, 2026 –On Saturday, Canada’s judokas enjoyed another action-packed tournament at the Pan-American Open in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, wrapping up the day with a total of nine medals, including three gold captured by Carla Van Zyl (-63 kg), Missy Jen Dorval Mbele (-70 kg), and Fahd Fithane (-73 kg).

Van Zyl and Fithane concluded the day in similar fashion, each of them pitted against fellow Canadians in their final matches of the tournament. Van Zyl, of British Columbia, defeated Quebec’s Catherine Toshkov by waza-ari, while Fithane, of Montréal, ousted Frédéric De Cardaillac to claim the top spot on the podium in his weight class.

In her own gold medal match, Dorval Mbele quickly disposed of Haiti’s Jennifer Étienne, winning her bout in less than a minute. Earlier, in the semi-finals, the Québécoise had taken on her compatriot Charlie Thibault. As for Thibault, she forged ahead despite her loss to Dorval Mbele, and finished the day on the third step of the podium.

According to team Canada coach Erika Miranda, the all-Canadian battles were some of the most exciting of the day. She also pointed out that all three of Canada’s gold medallists today are still in the junior age group.

“Carla, Missy Jen, and Fahd all had very good days, and not only because they won gold medals. They also displayed unwavering confidence, even though they were competing at the senior level. For each of them, the day’s biggest challenge was fighting against their training partners in very important bouts,” said Miranda.

In the under-66 kg division, Luke Thomson was defeated in the finals by Robin Jara of Mexico, while Vincent Roberge-Poitras bested Anderson Pol Guelle of the Dominican Republic to clinch a bronze medal. In the same weight category, Éliandre Barriault-Tremblay ended the day in seventh place. Denis Neyolov, Sébastien Fecteau, and Roman Semyrozun were limited to one bout each.

Vincent Nepton, Canada’s sole representative in the under-60 kg group, finished the day in second place thanks to a record of two wins and one loss.

Elizabeth Cossitt came in seventh in the under-70 kg class.

Two bouts each in Hungary for François Gauthier-Drapeau and Laurence Biron

At the Budapest Grand Slam in Hungary, François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) and Laurence Biron (-63 kg) were Canada’s top performers on Saturday, posting identical records of one win and one loss each.

After receiving a first-round bye, Quebec’s Gauthier-Drapeau bested Aurélien Bonferroni of Switzerland by waza-ari. In the next round, however, he bowed out to Vasilije Grujicic of Serbia, thus putting an end to his work day.

“François did very well in his first match, against an opponent who had defeated him the last time they met up. [Bonferroni] initially took the lead today, but François put a lot of pressure on him, forcing him to make an error, which allowed François to win. In François’ next bout, though, the young Serbian scored very quickly, and François wasn’t able to come back from behind,” explained Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

As for Biron, she posted an early win over Sara Golden of the USA thanks to two waza-ari. However, in the next round, she bowed out to Natalia Kropska of Poland.

In the under-73 kg group, Justin Lemire lost his first and only bout of the day.

Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) are the two Canadians who will be in action on Sunday to wrap up the Budapest Grand Slam.
