Montréal, 13 septembre 2026 –Trois judokas canadiens sont montés sur la deuxième marche du podium de leur catégorie respective, dimanche, en conclusion de l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue, en République dominicaine : Artem Neyolov (-81 kg), Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg) et Melody Grenier (-57 kg).

Grenier est d’ailleurs celle qui a eu la journée la plus occupée avec quatre combats. Elle a d’abord vaincu coup sur coup l’Argentine Karen Bujhamer et l’Américaine Noran Elmahroukey avant d’avoir raison de Leana Nelson, elle aussi des États-Unis, afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale.

Dans l’ultime combat de la journée, elle a toutefois baissé pavillon devant la Dominicaine Ana Rosa.

Dans la même catégorie, la Québécoise Laurence Gagnon et la Néo-Brunswickoise Hayden Thibeault ont toutes les deux terminé la journée avec une médaille de bronze autour du cou.

De leur côté, Neyolov et Gaulin n’ont eu besoin que de deux combats afin d’atteindre la finale de leur catégorie. Neyolov a battu l’Américain Daniel Shulgin et son compatriote Olivier Gagnon, éventuel médaillé de bronze, avant de plier l’échine devant le Mexicain Gilberto Cardoso au bout des quatre minutes réglementaires de la finale.

Quant à lui, Gaulin a eu raison du Dominicain Cesar Dominguez Reyes et de l’Ontarien Matthew Molchanov pour rejoindre Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal, de la République dominicaine, en finale. Le favori local l’a finalement emporté par ippon. Molchanov a poursuivi sa route pour remporter une médaille de bronze.

« Oui, ils ont tous été défaits en finale, c’est la réalité du sport, mais je ne crois pas que ces résultats racontent bien toute l’histoire. Je suis vraiment fier de la façon dont ils se sont battus aujourd’hui, et plus particulièrement de leur attitude et de leur état d’esprit tout au long de la journée », a mentionné l’entraîneur David Flecha Díez.

Porter Guy (-81 kg), Faniry-Michael Andriamanana (-90 kg) et Sara Bourihane (-52 kg) se sont inclinés en finale de bronze et terminent la journée au cinquième rang alors que Rima Bourihane (-52 kg) et Angelina McCristall (-48 kg) se sont classées septièmes de leur catégorie.

Le Canada termine l’Open panaméricain de Saint-Domingue au premier rang du classement total des médailles avec 16, dont trois d’or remportées samedi par Carla Van Zyl, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele et Fahd Fithane.

Une victoire et un revers pour Coralie Godbout à Budapest

Trois Canadiens étaient également de la partie au Grand Chelem de Budapest. Du lot, Coralie Godbout est la seule à avoir disputé plus d’un combat dans la capitale hongroise.

Chez les moins de 78 kg, l’athlète de Stoneham-et-Tewksbury a remporté son premier duel du jour face à la Biélorusse Slaviana Ryklevich, avant de baisser pavillon en temps supplémentaire au deuxième tour face à l’Allemande Lea Schmid, qui a pris le septième rang de la catégorie à l’issu de la compétition.

« Coralie a remporté son premier combat de manière convaincante. Elle menait le combat contre l’Allemande par la suite, mais son adversaire a réussi à égaliser dans les dernières secondes. L’Allemande a été capable de l’emporter ensuite en prolongation. C’est un peu décevant pour elle parce que c’était tout près avant que ça lui glisse entre les doigts », a mentionné l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.

De son côté, Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) a été ennuyé par une blessure à une cheville durant son affrontement contre le Japonais Yuta Kasai, s’inclinant après un peu plus de deux minutes de combat. Keagan Young (-90 kg), s’est lui aussi avoué vaincu à son premier affrontement de la journée alors qu’il était opposé à Novo Raicevic, du Monténégro.

Three Silver Medals to Conclude the Pan-American Open

Montréal, September 13, 2026 –Three Canadian judokas reached the second step of the podium in their respective weight classes on Sunday, as the Pan-American Open in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, came to a close. Artem Neyolov (-81 kg), Guillaume Gaulin (-90 kg), and Melody Grenier (-57 kg) will all return home sporting silver medals.

Of the three, Grenier had the busiest day, competing in a total of four matches. She began with back-to-back victories over Karen Bujhamer of Argentina and Noran Elmahroukey of the USA. Later, she defeated Leana Nelson, also of the USA, to secure her spot in the finals.

However, in her last bout of the day, she bowed out to Ana Rosa of the Dominican Republic.

In the same weight division, Quebec’s Laurence Gagnon and New Brunswick’s Hayden Thibeault ended the day with bronze medals around their necks.

As for Neyolov and Gaulin, they fought only two opponents each before advancing to the finals in their respective weight classes. Neyolov bested Daniel Shulgin of the USA, as well as his own compatriot Olivier Gagnon—who later won a bronze medal—before falling to Mexico’s Gilberto Cardoso at the end of the four-minute regulation time in the big final.

Meanwhile, Gaulin defeated Cesar Dominguez Reyes of the Dominican Republic and Matthew Molchanov of Ontario before facing Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal of the Dominican Republic in the finals. Ultimately, the local fan favourite won by ippon.

Molchanov went on to win a bronze medal.

“All three of them reached the final today. Unfortunately, we lost all three finals. That’s the reality of the competition, but I don’t think the results alone tell the whole story. I’m very pleased with the way they competed today, and especially with the attitude and mentality they showed,” said coach David Flecha Díez.

Porter Guy (-81 kg), Faniry-Michael Andriamanana (-90 kg), and Sara Bourihane (-52 kg) all finished fifth after losing their bronze medal matches, while Rima Bourihane (-52 kg) and Angelina McCristall (-48 kg) ended the day in seventh place.

Canada thus concludes the Santo Domingo Pan-American Open at the top of the overall medal standings, with a total of sixteen medals, including three gold won on Saturday by Carla Van Zyl, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele, and Fahd Fithane.

One win and one loss for Coralie Godbout in Budapest

Elsewhere, in Budapest, three Canadians took part in the Grand Slam on Sunday. Coralie Godbout was the only one of the three to compete in more than one match.

In the under-78 kg pool, the athlete from Stoneham-et-Tewksbury defeated Slaviana Ryklevich of Belarus in her first bout of the day, before falling in overtime to Germany’s Lea Schmid in the second round; Schmid ultimately finished seventh in the weight division.

“In her first match, Coralie won very decisively. Then, against Schmid, she led the scoring until her opponent tied it up in the final seconds. The German then won in overtime. It was a bit disappointing for Coralie, because she came so close to winning, but then the victory slipped through her fingers,” said Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

In the under-100 kg category, Kyle Reyes was hampered by an ankle injury during his bout against Japan’s Yuta Kasai, losing the battle after a little over two minutes. Keagan Young (-90 kg) also lost his first bout of the day, to Novo Raicevic of Montenegro.
