Montréal, 18 mai 2023 – Alexandria Lefort et Ludwing Ortiz ont été deux des grandes vedettes de la première journée des Championnats canadiens ouverts, jeudi, au Centre Pierre-Charbonneau de Montréal. En plus de remporter la médaille d’or de leur catégorie respective en Ne Waza, ils ont également été couronnés champions toutes catégories.

Lefort, de l’Ontario, a d’abord mérité le titre chez les plus de 63 kg en défaisant la Québécoise Stéphanie Lachance à deux reprises. Elle a ensuite poursuivi sa route avec des victoires coup sur coup devant Liwen Zhang (Colombie-Britannique) et Vicky Pitre (Nouveau-Brunswick) pour remporter la ceinture de championne canadienne en Ne Waza.

« Je suis extrêmement heureuse d’avoir remporté les grands honneurs aujourd’hui (jeudi). J’ai subi quelques blessures dans les dernières semaines, mais je me sentais en pleine forme sur les tatamis, c’est extrêmement bon pour la confiance », a commenté Lefort, elle qui voudra poursuivre sur sa lancée dimanche, chez les seniors.

« Je veux toujours finir première quand je suis sur les tatamis. Une journée comme ça, avec deux premières places, c’est très satisfaisant », a-t-elle ajouté.

Du côté masculin, Ludwing Ortiz, originaire du Venezuela et maintenant résident canadien, a remporté ses deux premiers affrontements de la journée par ippon dans la catégorie des moins de 81 kg. Il a ensuite eu raison du Néo-Écossais Kyle Sutherland en demi-finale avant de s’assurer de la médaille d’or de sa catégorie avec une victoire par ippon en finale contre Mohammad Bakhtiyar Hamza (Ontario).

Le Québécois d’adoption a poursuivi sa route vers les grands honneurs dans le tournoi pour couronner le champion toutes catégories. Il y a vaincu l’Albertain Billy-Joe Baldonado, puis le Québécois Thomas Badat en grande finale.

« Je ne savais pas vraiment à quoi m’attendre au début de la journée, mais j’ai eu beaucoup de plaisir. Je suis heureux d’avoir remporté la médaille d’or et particulièrement le titre toutes catégories confondues. Ça n’a pas été la compétition la plus facile et la grande finale contre Thomas Badat n’a pas été de tout repos. Je suis très fier de ma journée », a affirmé Ortiz.

Deux médailles pour le duo Enns-Palmer

Les Albertains Wesley Enns et Kelly Palmer étaient extrêmement motivés en vue des compétitions de Ju No Kata et de Katame No Kata présentées jeudi matin. Leur détermination a été payante et ils ont terminé la journée avec une médaille d’or et une autre d’argent.

« Je suis tellement, mais tellement heureux de ces médailles aujourd’hui ! Il y avait des équipes avec beaucoup de talent dans les deux catégories. Nous avons travaillé fort dans les dernières années pour aller chercher ces médailles et nous sommes très fiers de nous », a commenté Wesley Enns.

Ayant des gabarits aux antipodes, Enns et Palmer ont su tourner cela à leur avantage afin d’épater les juges. Ceux-ci leur ont attribué la médaille d’or en Katame No Kate avec un total de 390 points, soit 50 de plus que les médaillés d’argent, les Québécois Ludovic Durrieu et Éric Derome.

« Nous avons fait plusieurs ajustements dans les derniers mois pour arriver au résultat que nous avons eu aujourd’hui. Je suis vraiment plus petit que mon coéquipier et nous avons voulu tirer profit de cette différence. C’est impressionnant de voir un petit athlète en contrôler un plus grand et plus gros, je pense que ç’a vraiment attiré l’attention », s’est réjoui Kelly Palmer.

En Ju No Kata, les Albertains ont terminé sur la deuxième marche du podium derrière Simon Gauthier-Hansen et Juliette Mireault, du Québec.

Tous du Québec, Mario Pageau et Martin Vallières, en Kime No Kata, Ivan Fournier et Pierre Pelletier, en Goshin Jutsu,ainsi que Frédéric Lachance et Jean-Sébastien Roy, en Nage No Kata, ont remporté les autres médailles à l’enjeu dans les différentes catégories en Kata jeudi.

Les Championnats canadiens ouverts se poursuivront jusqu’à dimanche au Centre Pierre-Charbonneau.

Alexandria Lefort and Ludwing Ortiz kick off the Canadian Open Championships

Montréal, May 18, 2023 – Alexandria Lefort and Ludwing Ortiz were two of the standout stars Thursday, the first day of the Canadian Open Championships at Montréal’s Centre Pierre-Charbonneau. In addition to winning the gold medals in their respective categories in Ne Waza, they were also crowned overall champions.

Ontario’s Lefort won the Over 63 kg title by defeating Québec’s Stéphanie Lachance twice. She then followed up with back-to-back wins over Liwen Zhang (British Columbia) and Vicky Pitre (New Brunswick) to win the Canadian Ne Waza title.

« I’m extremely happy to have won today (Thursday). I’ve had a few injuries over the past few weeks but I felt great on the mat, so it’s been extremely good for my confidence, » noted Lefort, who’s looking to continue her winning ways on Sunday in the Senior division. « I always want to finish first when I’m on the mat. A day like this with two first places is so satisfying! »

On the men’s tatami, Ludwing Ortiz (a native of Venezuela and now a Canadian resident), won his first two bouts of the day by ippon in the Under 81 kg class. He then made short work of Nova Scotia’s Kyle Sutherland in the semi-finals, before securing the gold medal in his category with an ippon victory in the final against Mohammad Bakhtiyar Hamza of Ontario.

The Quebecer-by-adoption went on to take top honours in the tournament to become the overall champion, first defeating Billy-Joe Baldonado of Alberta and then Thomas Badat of Québec in the grand final.

« I didn’t really know what to expect at the beginning of the day, but I had a lot of fun. I’m happy to have won the gold medal and especially the overall title. It wasn’t the easiest competition, and the final against Thomas Badat was pretty tough. I’m very proud of my day, » commented Ortiz.

Two medals for the Enns-Palmer duo

Albertans Wesley Enns and Kelly Palmer characterized themselves as super motivated heading into Thursday morning’s Ju No Kata and Katame No Kata competitions. Their determination paid off and they finished the day with a gold and a silver medal.

« I am so, so happy with these medals today! There were very talented teams in both categories. We’ve worked hard over the past few years to earn these medals and we’re very proud of ourselves, » commented Wesley Enns.

Despite contrasting sizes, Enns and Palmer turned their differences into advantages and impressed the judges, who awarded them the gold medal in Katame No Kate. The duo earned a total of 390 points, 50 more than silver medalists, Ludovic Durrieu and Eric Derome of Québec.

« We’ve made several adjustments in the last few months to get the results we did today. I’m really a lot smaller than my teammate and we wanted to take advantage of that discrepancy. It’s impressive to see a smaller athlete controlling a bigger one, I think that really caught their eyes, » said Kelly Palmer.

In Ju No Kata, the Albertans finished on the second step of the podium behind Simon Gauthier-Hansen and Juliette Mireault from Québec.

Judokas from Québec, namely Mario Pageau and Martin Vallières, in Kime No Kata, Ivan Fournier and Pierre Pelletier, in Goshin Jutsu, as well as Frédéric Lachance and Jean-Sébastien Roy, in Nage No Kata, won the other medals up for grabs in the various Kata categories on Thursday.
