Judo Canada – European Cup
Montreal, October 9, 2016 – Alix Renaud-Roy was the best-placed Canadian in Belgrade, Serbia’s European Judo Cup this Sunday, walking away with an Under 70 kg bronze medal around her neck.
Renaud-Roy’s day began with an ippon victory over Serbian Katarina Denic. In her next match, two penalties tipped the scale in favour of Bosnian Aleksandra Samardzic. “My day went pretty well, except for my second fight,” she said. “It was tight, and I wasn’t able to find a way out of her grip.”
In the repechage round, the Quebecer disposed of Romanian Lorena Podelenczki with an ippon. Then in her match for the bronze, she scored yet another ippon, this time over Dutch Margit de Voogd.
“I am very pleased with Alix‘s performance and result,” said Team Canada coach Michel Almeida. “The main plan, after her shoulder surgery at the beginning of the year, has been to have her fighting as many fights as possible so she can achieve the consistency of performance needed to succeed in the events that award world ranking points.”
Almeida also mentioned that, after a difficult beginning in this year's PanAmerican Championships and the competitions that soon followed it, Renaud-Roy is now on the right track, with her second consecutive European Cup medal.
Meanwhile, Montrealer Louis Krieber-Gagnon (Under 90 kg) beat Serbian Miroljub Ivezic by penalties, but lost his second bout by ippon to Italian Nicholas Mungai.
Kevin Gauthier (Over 100 kg), from Montreal, finished the competition with a 0-2 record. He lost by ippon to Serbian Zarko Culum and then by waza-ari in the repechage round to Croatian Ivan Covic.
Jérémie Poirier (Under 81 kg) was shown the door after his very first match. The Sainte-Julie native suffered an ippon at the hands of Hungarian Milan Koller and was eliminated from the competition.
