Montréal, 28 octobre 2023 – Médaillé d’or aux Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie au mois de septembre dernier à Calgary, Julien Frascadore n’avait qu’une chose en tête samedi aux Jeux panaméricains de Santiago : grimper encore une fois sur la plus haute marche du podium.

Le Québécois y était presque. Il a atteint la finale des moins de 66 kg où il a toutefois subi la défaite face au Vénézuélien Willis Alberto Garcia Estrada. C’est donc avec une médaille d’argent, difficile à accepter pour l’instant, que Frascadore reviendra du Chili.

« Ce n’est pas le résultat que je voulais, particulièrement après ma victoire aux Championnats panaméricains. Je suis déçu de la façon dont la finale s’est terminée. J’ai eu de gros défis tout au long de la journée que j’ai été capable de surmonter. C’est certain que perdre en finale, ça laisse un petit goût amer », a commenté Frascadore quelques minutes avant les cérémonies de remise de médailles.

« Je savais que le Vénézuélien allait être dangereux dès le début du combat. Il fallait que je sois agressif rapidement pour imposer le rythme et faire avancer le duel. Il a toutefois été rapide et je pense qu’il a exécuté son plan de match à la perfection », a ajouté le Québécois.

Pour atteindre cette finale, Julien Frascadore a vaincu le Mexicain Robin Sergio Jara Arana, l’Équatorien Lenin Preciado ainsi que le Péruvien Juan Postigos coup sur coup. Selon le Canadien, c’est son duel face à Preciado en quart de finale qui s’est avéré son meilleur de la journée.

« Avec le recul, je pense que je vais être fier de cette médaille-là. Je pense que j’ai connu une bonne journée, particulièrement contre l’Équatorien. C’est un adversaire que j’ai croisé dans le passé et ce sont toujours des combats difficiles. J’ai respecté les consignes de mon entraîneur et je suis vraiment fier de l’avoir battu », a noté l’athlète de 23 ans.

L’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic abonde dans le même sens que son protégé en affirmant avoir vu de belles choses de la part de Frascadore au cours de la journée. Il avance également être persuadé que l’amertume de la deuxième place deviendra, avec le temps, une énorme fierté.

« Julien a été excellent aujourd’hui (samedi), il semblait en parfait contrôle de ses moyens et je voyais qu’il était en confiance. En finale, le Vénézuélien a bien contré notre plan de match. Julien est déçu, et c’est normal. Mais, il sera heureux de cette médaille sous peu, il reviendra plus fort la prochaine fois, j’en suis certain », a commenté Mehmedovic.

Dimanche, Isabelle Harris (-63 kg), Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg) et David Popovici (-81 kg) seront les trois Canadiens en action sur les tatamis des Jeux panaméricains.

“When I look back, I think I’ll be proud of this medal.” – Julien Frascadore

Montréal, October 28, 2023 – Julien Frascadore, who won a gold medal at the PanAmerican/Oceania Championships in Calgary in September, had only one ambition on Saturday at the Pan-American Games: To climb to the top of the podium once again.

He almost made it. The Québécois advanced all the way to the under-66 kg final, only to be defeated by Willis Alberto Garcia Estrada of Venezuela. He will therefore return home from Chile with the silver medal—a result he’s finding difficult to accept at the moment.

“It’s not the outcome I was hoping for, especially after I won the PanAmerican Championship. I’m disappointed with how the final ended. I faced some tough challenges today, and I was able to overcome them all, so losing in the final leaves a bit of a bitter taste,” said Frascadore, moments before the medal ceremony.

“I knew the Venezuelan would be dangerous right from the start of the bout. I quickly had to turn up the aggression in order to set the tempo and keep the fight moving. But he was very fast, and I get the impression he executed his game plan perfectly,” added Frascadore.

To reach the final, Frascadore defeated Robin Sergio Jara Arana of Mexico, Lenin Preciado of Ecuador and Juan Postigos of Peru in three straight matches. According to the Canadian, his bout against Preciado in the quarter-final was his best of the day.

“When I look back, I think I’ll be proud of this medal. I think I had a great day, especially against the Ecuadorian. I’ve fought him in the past, and the bouts are always tough. I followed my coach’s instructions, and I’m really proud to have beaten him,” explained the 23-year-old athlete.

Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic agrees, stating that he saw great things from Frascadore today. He is also convinced that while Frascadore may be feeling a little bitter right now, with hindsight he will be immensely proud.

“Julien was excellent today [Saturday]. He appeared to be in complete control, and I could see that he was feeling confident. The Venezuelan very effectively countered our game plan. Julien is disappointed, and that’s normal. But soon, he’ll be happy with it, and he’ll come back even stronger next time. I’m sure of it,” said Mehmedovic.

On Sunday, Canadians Isabelle Harris (-63 kg), Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg) and David Popovici (-81 kg) will all be in action at the Pan-American Games.
