Judo Canada – European Judo Open
Montreal, July 22, 2017 – Saturday, one lonely Canadian judoka was on the tatami at the European Judo Open in Minsk, Belarus. However, Warren Seib (U73 kg) was ousted from the competition rather quickly, after a loss and a win in preliminary rounds.
The Saskatchewan-based judoka began his day with a two waza-ari win against Belarus’ Aliaksandr Akhrem, in a bout that lasted nine minutes and four seconds, “The first fight went as planned. It was a fairly long fight, but I knew that the further it went into golden score the more that would work to my advantage.”
It was in the second round that things began to falter for the Canuck, who lost to Italy’s Enrico Parlati, and the latter’s ippon.
“I'm disappointed. I’ve fought against Parlati in practice and I knew what techniques he would use, but he still caught me with an ippon,” commented Seib, who ended the competition with a win and a loss.
Azerbaijan’s Hidayat Heydarova took home the gold in a match against eventual Russian silver medallist Oleg Babgoev, while the Czech Republic’s Jaromir Jezek and Armenia’s Ferdinand Karapetian both earned bronze medals.
