Montréal, 5 août 2023 – Caeli McKay a bataillé fermement samedi pour une place sur le podium à la plateforme de 10 m à la Finale de la Coupe du monde de plongeon à Berlin, en Allemagne. La Canadienne est finalement arrivée tout juste à court, terminant au quatrième rang, à 6,8 points d’une place sur le podium.

McKay a obtenu 66,00 points dès son premier plongeon, ce qui la plaçait provisoirement en sixième place. Elle a réussi à grimper jusqu’au quatrième rang provisoire avec encore deux sauts à effectuer.

Les choses se sont compliquées pour McKay lors de sa quatrième entrée à l’eau où elle n’a obtenu que 49,50 points. Elle a toutefois été en mesure de se reprendre de belle façon à son dernier passage sur la plateforme en obtenant 73,60 points, son meilleur pointage de la journée. McKay a du même coup concrétisé sa quatrième place avec une récolte totale de 324,10 points.

Les Chinoises Yuxi Chen (420,30 points) et Hongchan Quan (408,10 points) ont dominé la compétition, mettant respectivement la main sur la médaille d’or et d’argent. Le podium a été complété par la Britannique Andrea Spendolini Sirieix et ses 330,90 points.

Lors des qualifications plus tôt dans la journée, McKay s’était classée cinquième afin d’obtenir son billet pour la ronde ultime.

De son côté, Bryden Hattie était en action au tremplin de 3 m où il a été en mesure de prendre le 11^e rang de la finale avec une note totale de 360,15 points.

Après une performance en deçà de ses attentes aux Championnats du monde il y a quelques semaines, Hattie a avoué qu’il ne se sentait pas particulièrement en confiance au début des qualifications en matinée. Il a toutefois été en mesure d’obtenir son billet pour la ronde finale en vertu de ses 370,65 points.

Une fois en finale, le Britanno-Colombien a réussi deux excellents premiers plongeons avant de connaître quelques difficultés à ses autres passages sur le tremplin.

« Je n’étais pas tellement confiant au tout début de la compétition, je ne pensais même pas être en mesure de me qualifier pour la finale, mais je suis très heureux d’avoir réussi à le faire. Ç’a bien commencé en finale, mais dès mon troisième plongeon, j’ai connu un peu plus de difficulté », a commenté Hattie.

La médaille d’or a été remportée par le Chinois Zongyuan Wang (540,60 points). Il a devancé l’Allemand Moritz Wesemann (464,15 points) et l’Américain Andrew Capobianco (425,50 points), qui terminent respectivement deuxième et troisième.

Hattie devrait être de retour en action dimanche à la Finale de la Coupe du monde alors qu’il participera à l’épreuve mixte par équipe en compagnie de Caeli McKay, Pamela Ware et Nathan Zsombor-Murray.

Ware (3 m) et Zsombor-Murray (10 m) seront également des épreuves individuelles dimanche, tout comme Mia Vallée (3 m).

Caeli McKay, fourth in the 10m platform

Montréal, August 5, 2023 – Caeli McKay fought hard Saturday for a place on the 10m platform podium at the Diving World Cup Super Final in Berlin, Germany. Bittersweetly, the Canadian came up just short, finishing in fourth place, a mere 6.8 points short of a podium place.

McKay scored 66.00 points on her first dive, putting her in sixth place provisionally. She managed to climb to provisional fourth place with two dives still to go.

Things got tougher for McKay on her fourth effort, where she scored just 49.50 points. However, she rallied back in style on her final run on the platform, scoring 73.60 points, her best score of the day. McKay rounded off her fourth-place finish with a total of 324.10 points.

China’s Yuxi Chen (420.30 points) and Hongchan Quan (408.10 points) dominated the competition, taking gold and silver respectively. The podium was completed by Great Britain’s Andrea Spendolini Sirieix with 330.90 points.

In qualifying dives earlier in the day, McKay placed fifth to secure her berth in the final round.

In men’s diving action, Bryden Hattie was in action on the 3m springboard, where he was able to take 11th place in the final with a total score of 360.15 points.

After a sub-par performance at World Championships a few weeks ago, Hattie admitted that he wasn’t feeling particularly confident at the start of morning qualifying rounds. However, he turned it around, and was able to secure his passage to the finals with his 370.65 points.

Once in the finals, the British Columbian delivered two excellent dives before having some difficulties with his other passages on the springboard.

“I wasn’t very confident at the start of the competition – I didn’t even think I’d be able to qualify for the final – but I’m very happy to have done it. I started off well in the final, but by my third dive I was having a bit more difficulty,” commented Hattie.

The gold medal went to China’s Zongyuan Wang (540.60 points); Germany’s Moritz Wesemann (464.15 points) came in for silver, and American Andrew Capobianco (425.50 points), took third place on the podium.

Hattie is slated to be back in action on Sunday at the World Cup Super Finals, when he will compete in the mixed team event alongside Caeli McKay, Pamela Ware, and Nathan Zsombor-Murray.

Some divers will compete in individual events Sunday, including: Ware (3m) and Zsombor-Murray (10m), as well as Mia Vallée (3m).
