Montréal, 5 février 2024 – Caeli McKay espérait certainement un meilleur résultat, lundi, à la finale à la tour de 10 m des Championnats du monde des sports aquatiques. L’athlète de Calgary, maintenant basée à Montréal, a pris la huitième place en vertu de ses 310,05 points.

« Je suis assez déçue, ça n’a pas été une journée facile de mon côté. Je vais retourner à la maison avec plusieurs aspects à travailler. Je n’ai pas été capable de m’entraîner comme je l’aurais souhaité dans les dernières semaines. Quand je suis constante à l’entraînement, je suis meilleure que je l’ai été aujourd’hui (lundi), je le sais », a mentionné McKay, quelques instants après son dernier plongeon de la compétition présentée à Doha, au Qatar.

La plongeuse de 24 ans a bien amorcé la finale, recevant une note de 67,50 points à son premier plongeon, ce qui la plaçait au cinquième rang provisoire. Les choses ont toutefois été plus difficiles lors de son troisième et de son cinquième passage à la tour qui ont valu des pointages identiques de 57,60.

« J’ai quand même connu de bons moments lors de la finale. Les choses importantes s’en viennent dans les prochains mois et je serai prête. »

Les Chinoises Hongchan Quan (436,25 points) et Yuxi Chen (427,80 points) ont terminé respectivement première et deuxième. Elles ont été accompagnées sur le podium par la Britannique Andrea Spendolini Sirieix (377,10 points).

Plus tôt dans la journée, McKay avait assuré sa place en grande finale en terminant au 12^e rang des demi-finales grâce à son pointage de 273,15.

McKay aura l’occasion de se reprendre dès mardi où elle participera à la finale du 10 m synchro en compagnie de Kate Miller.

« Je vais utiliser ma déception de la journée comme une motivation pour le synchro. J’ai un peu de rage en moi présentement. Je veux me reprendre et corriger mes erreurs le plus rapidement possible. Je suis persuadée qu’on aura beaucoup de plaisir avec Kate lors de la compétition », a conclu McKay.

Cédric Fofana sera également en action mardi alors qu’il prendra part à la ronde préliminaire au tremplin de 3 m. Les demi-finales et la finale se dérouleront le lendemain.

Caeli McKay Eighth on 10m Platform

Montréal, February 5, 2024 – Caeli McKay had certainly hoped for a better result in the 10m platform final at the World Aquatics Championships on Monday. The Calgarian, who is now based in Montréal, finished eighth with 310.05 points.

“I’m pretty disappointed, but things didn’t come easily to me today. I have a lot to work on when I get back home. For the past few weeks, I haven’t been able to train as often as I would have liked, and I know that when I train more consistently, I perform better than I did today (Monday),” explained McKay, moments after her final dive in Doha, Qatar.

The 24-year-old diver got off to a good start in the final, earning a score of 67.50 on her first dive, which put her in provisional fifth place. However, she had a bit more trouble with her third and fifth dives, which received identical scores of 57.60.

“Still, I had a few good moments during the final. Big things are coming up in the next few months, and I’ll be ready.” 

Hongchan Quan (436.25 points) and Yuxi Chen (427.80 points) finished first and second, respectively. They were accompanied on the podium by Andrea Spendolini Sirieix of Great Britain (377.10 points).

Earlier in the day, McKay had secured her spot in the final with a twelfth-place finish in the semi-final, with 273.15 points.

McKay will be back in action on Tuesday for the 10m synchronized final with Kate Miller.

“I’ll use today’s disappointment as motivation for the synchronized competition. I’m feeling a bit of rage right now. I want to fix my mistakes and get back on track as quickly as possible. I’m sure the competition with Kate will a lot of fun,” concluded McKay.

Cédric Fofana will also compete on Tuesday, in the preliminary rounds of the 3m springboard event. The semi-finals and finals will take place the following day.
