Calgary accueillera les Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie 2023

Montréal, 2 novembre 2022 – C’est avec fierté et enthousiasme que Judo Canada annonce la tenue des Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie à Calgary, en septembre 2023. Les meilleurs judokas provenant des Amériques et aussi de l’Océanie s’affronteront chez les séniors, mais également dans les divisions cadet et junior, une première en sol canadien.

Il s’agira d’un retour au pays pour cet événement qui avait été présenté à Edmonton en 2015, et qui devait avoir lieu à Montréal en 2020, avant d’être relocalisé au Mexique en raison de la COVID-19. Il va sans dire que la nouvelle a fait le bonheur de l’équipe de Judo Canada, qui avait bien hâte d’être de nouveau l’hôte d’un tournoi international.

« Comme nous l’avions démontré en 2019 avec le Grand Prix de Montréal, organiser et accueillir des événements d’envergure au Canada fait toujours partie de notre planification stratégique pour nos athlètes et le développement de notre sport. Nous avions obtenu les droits des Championnats panaméricains pour avril 2020 à Montréal et malgré que nous n’ayons pu présenter la compétition, nous avons maintenu le cap pour les récupérer. Nous sommes fiers de la nouvelle mouture qui sera présentée à Calgary », indique Nicolas Gill, directeur général et directeur haute performance de Judo Canada.

« C’est un grand plaisir pour nous de pouvoir accueillir les participants des différentes catégories pour cette édition 2023 de l’événement. La communauté du judo de Calgary possède une grande expérience dans la tenue d’événements nationaux et internationaux. Je suis convaincu que nous serons en mesure d’offrir une expérience unique et mémorable aux athlètes, entraîneurs, officiels, délégués, bénévoles et autres intervenants » mentionne quant à lui le président du Comité organisateur local, Allan Sattin.

Le programme s’annonce pour le moins chargé à l’occasion de ce rendez-vous tant attendu qui sera disputé en trois parties distinctes. Les jeunes judokas de la relève lanceront d’abord le bal avec la présentation des compétitions individuelles et par équipe, tant chez les cadets que les juniors, du 8 au 10 septembre, après quoi un camp international de trois jours suivra.

Les athlètes séniors fouleront ensuite les tatamis du 14 au 17 septembre avec la ferme intention d’accumuler un maximum de points au processus de qualification olympique qui mènera jusqu’aux Jeux de Paris, en 2024.

« Nous n’aurons pas seulement un, mais bien deux événements pour accueillir les athlètes des différentes tranches d’âge, avec en prime l’ajout de l’Océanie, qui fait partie de notre structure depuis le début de l’année 2022, poursuit Nicolas Gill. Difficile de demander plus sur le plan touristique et pour des retombées économiques encore plus grandes pour la ville hôte et la province ! »

« Nous sommes très excités à l’idée d’être la ville hôte des Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie », ajoute Carson Ackroyd, vice-président senior des ventes chez Tourisme Calgary. « Nous avons hâte d’accueillir cet événement unique chez nous et de mettre en valeur les attraits de classe mondiale de Calgary, tels que ses sites d’hébergement, ses restaurants et ses attractions aux centaines d’athlètes, entraîneurs, accompagnateurs et partisans de judo provenant de partout en Amérique et de l’Océanie. »

La table est mise pour une quinzaine inoubliable, où les judokas canadiens tenteront de se surpasser afin d’atteindre le podium devant leurs partisans.

Calgary to Host 2023 Pan-American/Oceania Championships

Montréal, November 2nd, 2022 – Judo Canada is proud and excited to announce that Calgary has been selected to host the Pan-American/Oceania Championships in September 2023. For the first time ever on Canadian soil, top-ranked athletes from the Americas and from Oceania will compete in the senior, cadet and junior divisions.

This will mark the first time since 2015 that the Championships are held in Canada. That year, they were hosted by Edmonton. The tournament was due to be held in Montréal in 2020, but was relocated to Mexico due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Needless to say, the Judo Canada team is thrilled by the news, as its members have been eagerly looking forward to hosting an international tournament once again.

“As we demonstrated in 2019 with the Montréal Grand Prix, organizing and hosting major events in Canada remains part of our strategic plan, both for our athletes and for the development of our sport. We had secured the right to hold the Pan-American Championships in Montréal in April 2020, but we all know what happened next. However, we stayed the course and we’re proud to take on this next project,” stated Nicolas Gill, Chief Executive Officer and High Performance Director of Judo Canada.

“It is a great pleasure to be able to welcome the participants to the City of Calgary for the 2023 edition of the Pan Am/Oceania Judo Championship for Cadet, Junior and Senior competitors. I am certain that we are able to offer a wonderful and enjoyable experience for all of the athletes, coaches, officials, delegates and volunteers. The Calgary Judo community has extensive experience in hosting national and international Judo events,” said Allan Sattin, president of the local organizing committee.

The program of the long-awaited event, which will be held in three distinct stages, promises to be action-packed. From September 8-10, the cadet and junior level judokas will get the ball rolling with the individual and team events. This will be followed by a three-day international training camp.

The senior athletes will then hit the tatamis from September 14-17, hoping to earn maximum points toward the 2024 Paris Olympics qualification process.

“There will be not one, but two events to cater to the different age groups. In addition, Oceania, which has been part of our structure since the beginning of 2022, will also participate,” added Gill. “It will be a boon for the local tourism industry and will provide tremendous economic benefits to the host city and the province!”

The stage is set for an unforgettable two weeks, where Canadian judokas will outdo themselves in an effort to reach the podium in front of the home country crowd!
