Montréal, 5 février 2022 – Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard était de retour à la compétition pour une première fois, samedi, depuis sa victoire pour une médaille de bronze aux Jeux olympiques de Tokyo, en juillet dernier. Au Grand Chelem de Paris, l’athlète de Saint-Hubert a été défaite à son premier affrontement du tableau des moins de 63 kg alors qu’elle était opposée à la Sud-Coréenne Juyeon Lee.
« Je n’avais pas vraiment de grandes attentes, mais je voulais plus reprendre ma routine et faire le poids après plus de sept mois (d’absence en tournoi). C’est clair que tout ne s’est pas passé comme je le voulais non plus, sauf que je voulais retourner à la compétition. J’espérais mieux », a reconnu Beauchemin-Pinard, qui n’était tout de même pas accablée après ce résultat.
Alors que les deux combattantes avaient chacune deux pénalités dans cet affrontement disputé à forces égales, la Coréenne a basculé vers l’arrière pour faire tomber la Canadienne sur le dos avec moins d’une minute à faire, ce qui a été suffisant pour l’ippon.
« C’est moi qui ai lancé l’attaque et elle en a profité pour la finir. C’est un combat qui était à ma portée et je pense que dans des conditions différentes et avec une meilleure préparation, j’aurais pu gagner », a poursuivi l’athlète en faisant référence à la fermeture du Centre national d’entraînement après Noël en raison du variant Omicron.
La médaillée de bronze olympique a ajouté que son retour au pays après son succès à Tokyo n’a pas été des plus reposants. « Il y a peut-être des traces de ces mois-là où je ne me suis pas beaucoup reposée. [..] Aujourd’hui (samedi), il fallait que je casse la glace. »
Juyeon Lee a ensuite été défaite par la Polonaise Angelika Szymanska, ce qui a fermé la porte à Beauchemin-Pinard pour une place au repêchage.
François Gauthier-Drapeau sera le seul Canadien en action dimanche. Il sera dans le tableau des moins de 81 kg.

Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard Defeated upon Return to Competition
Montréal, February 5, 2022 – On Saturday, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard returned to competition for the first time since her bronze medal performance at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer. At the Paris Grand Slam today, the judoka from Saint-Hubert lost her first match of the day in the under-63 kg group to Juyeon Lee of South Korea.
“My expectations were not very high, but I wanted to get back into my routine and to know that I was up to the task after more than seven months (away from competition). Obviously, things didn’t go the way I wanted them to, but I felt the need to compete again. I had hoped for better,” admitted Beauchemin-Pinard, who, despite her loss, is not distressed by her result.
In the evenly matched bout, the two adversaries had received two penalties each when Lee tilted backward, causing the Canadian to fall onto her back with less than a minute to go. It was enough for an ippon.
“I was the one who attacked first, but she’s the one who ended it. The win was within my reach, and I think that under different circumstances, and with better preparation, I would have had it,” said Beauchemin-Pinard, referring to the closure of the National Training Centre since just after Christmas, due to the Omicron variant.
The Olympic bronze medallist added that her return home after her successful performance in Tokyo was not especially relaxing. “Those few months where I didn’t get a lot of rest have maybe left their mark […] Today (Saturday), I needed to break the ice again.”
After her bout against Beauchemin-Pinard, Lee was defeated by Poland’s Angelika Szymanska, putting an end to Beauchemin-Pinard’s hopes of a spot in the repechage.
François Gauthier-Drapeau will be the only Canadian in action on Sunday. He will compete in the under-81 kg category.
