Montréal, 16 avril 2022 – Après avoir obtenu des cinquièmes places lors de ses deux dernières sorties internationales, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard s’est retrouvée sur la deuxième marche du podium aux Championnats panaméricains de Lima, au Pérou, vendredi.
Beauchemin-Pinard a été parfaite jusqu’à la grande finale où elle s’est butée à une Katharina Haecker en plein contrôle de ses moyens. La Québécoise conclut donc la journée avec une médaille d’argent autour du cou.
« Ça fait du bien de remonter sur le podium et surtout de me rendre jusqu’à la finale, c’est sûr que rendu là, on espère avoir la médaille d’or, mais ç’a été un combat assez solide et très serré. J’ai commis une petite erreur vers la fin du combat qui a ouvert la porte à Haecker pour un étranglement et je n’avais pas le choix de taper », a expliqué Beauchemin-Pinard, qui était championne en titre des Championnats panaméricains.
La médaillée de bronze aux Jeux olympiques de Tokyo a battu coup sur coup la Chilienne Marcela Alfaro et l’Américaine Alisha Galles en début de journée pour sortir invaincue de la phase de groupe.
En demi-finales, Yusmari Reyes Laffita a à son tour goûté à la médecine de Beauchemin-Pinard qui tenait absolument à se rendre en grande finale. La Cubaine a finalement remporté l’une des deux médailles de bronze.
« La journée s’est super bien déroulée. Je ne voulais pas me mettre en danger inutilement dans mes deux premiers combats, j’ai pris mon temps le plus possible. Je me sentais bien à chacune des séquences. En demi-finales, je contrôlais vraiment bien le combat et je ne me suis jamais senti en danger. »
« Je suis satisfaite de ma journée, je suis contente d’avoir monté sur le podium. Je vais continuer à travailler sur certaines choses pour me rendre jusqu’au bout la prochaine fois », a-t-elle ajouté.
Dans la même catégorie, Isabelle Harris s’est inclinée à son seul combat de la journée contre Prisca Awiti Alcaraz du Mexique.
Deux médailles de bronze
Chez les moins de 52 kg, Kelly Deguchi a elle aussi brillé en s’emparant de l’une des médailles de bronze grâce à sa victoire face à Kristine Jimenez du Panama.
« Kelly a été très offensive et agressive tout au long de la journée. Je l’ai senti un peu endormi au début du combat pour le bronze et ça lui a coûté un point. Elle s’est reprise de très belle façon par la suite, elle a changé son attitude et elle était extrêmement concentrée pour aller chercher la victoire », a remarqué l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier.
À son premier combat de la journée, Deguchi s’est imposée contre l’Argentine Ayelen Elizeche avant d’être vaincue par l’Américaine Katelyn Jarrell.
L’Albertaine ne s’est pas laissé abattre par cette défaite alors qu’elle est revenue en force au repêchage pour se départir de la Mexicaine Paulina Martinez.
Chez les hommes, Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg) a imité sa compatriote en remportant lui aussi une médaille de bronze alors que le Brésilien Daniel Cargnin qu’il devait affronter en finale pour le bronze ne s’est pas présenté à cause d’une blessure.
Le Québécois a remporté son premier duel de la journée face à l’Australien Sam King avant de baisser pavillon contre l’Américain Dominic Martinez, éventuel médaillé d’or. Bouchard a ensuite vaincu le Colombien Arkangel Barboza en route vers son combat pour la médaille de bronze.
« C’est une journée un peu décevante pour moi. Oui j’ai terminé au troisième rang, mais je n’ai pas encore retrouvé la forme que j’avais avant les Jeux de Tokyo. Je vois une certaine amélioration à chaque tournoi, mais je ne suis pas satisfait pleinement », a commenté Bouchard.
Dans la même catégorie, Arthur Margelidon a terminé au septième rang après sa défaite lors du premier tour du repêchage contre le Mexicain Gilberto Cardoso. Margelidon a conclu la journée avec une fiche d’une victoire et deux défaites.
Samedi, Alicia Fiandor (-70 kg), Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), Étienne Briand (-81 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg), Keagan Young (-90 kg), Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-81 kg), Shady ElNahas (-100 kg), Ian Ryder (-100 kg) et Marc Deschênes (+100 kg) seront en action aux Championnats panaméricains.

Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard Just Short of Summit
Montréal, April 16, 2022 – After finishing fifth in her last two international tournaments, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard ended her day on the second step of the podium at the Pan-American Championships in Lima, Peru, on Friday.
Her day had gone smoothly until the very last round, where she faced a forceful Katharina Haecker of Australia in the under-63 kg gold medal final. The Québécoise was awarded silver.
“It feels good to make it to the final and to get back on the podium. Of course, once in the final, I had hoped to win gold, but it was a close, solid fight. I made a slight error toward the end that allowed Haecker to get a choke hold, and I had no choice but to tap out, » explained Beauchemin-Pinard, who was the defending Pan-American champion.
In her earlier bouts, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist had ousted Marcela Alfaro of Chile and Alisha Galles of the USA back-to-back to advance undefeated from her pool.
In the semi-final, it was Cuban Yusmari Reyes Laffita’s turn to get a taste of Beauchemin-Pinard’s medicine, as the Canadian was determined to advance to the gold medal round. Reyes Laffita later won a bronze medal.
“The day went super well. I didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks in my early fights, so I took my time as much as possible. I felt good in every sequence. In the semi-final, I stayed in control and never felt like I was in any danger,” said Beauchemin-Pinard. “I’m satisfied with my day and happy I made it to the podium. I’m going to keep working on certain things so that next time, I make it to the top.”
In the same weight class, Isabelle Harris lost her only bout of the day to Prisca Awiti Alcaraz of Mexico.
Two bronze medals
In the under-52 kg division, Kelly Deguchi defeated Kristine Jimenez of Panama to clinch a bronze medal.
“Kelly fought very offensively and aggressively all day today. I got the impression she was a bit sluggish at the beginning of the bronze medal round, though, and that cost her a point. But she recovered well and adjusted her attitude, and stayed very focused on winning,” commented coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.
In her first fight of the day, Deguchi edged out Argentina’s Ayelen Elizeche before being defeated by American Katelyn Jarrell.
The Albertan did not let the loss get her down, however, and she came back strong in the repechage to dispose of Mexico’s Paulina Martinez.
On the men’s side, Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg) also won a bronze medal when his opponent Daniel Cargnin of Brazil failed to show up for the bronze medal final due to an injury.
Earlier, the Québécois had won his first match of the day against Sam King of Australia before losing to Dominic Martinez of the USA, who later won the gold medal. Bouchard then defeated Arkangel Barboza of Colombia to advance to the bronze medal round.
“It was a bit of a disappointing day for me. Sure, I finished third, but I’m still not in the same shape I was in before the Tokyo Games. I’ve been improving at every tournament, but I’m still not satisfied,” said Bouchard.
In the same weight category, Arthur Margelidon finished seventh after losing the first round of the repechage to Gilberto Cardoso of Mexico. He ended his day with a record of one win and two losses.
On Saturday, Alicia Fiandor (-70 kg), Coralie Godbout (-78 kg), Étienne Briand (-81 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg), Keagan Young (-90 kg), Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-81 kg), Shady El Nahas (-100 kg), Ian Ryder (-100 kg) and Marc Deschênes (+100 kg) will be in action at the Pan-American Championships.
