Montréal, 28 février 2026 (Sportcom) – La judoka Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard a obtenu la médaille d’argent, samedi, dans la catégorie des moins de 63 kg au Grand Chelem de Tashkent, en Ouzbékistan. Également de la compétition, le Québécois François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) a vu son parcours prendre fin en huitièmes de finale.

« Je suis contente parce qu’à ma dernière compétition à Tokyo, en décembre, j’avais perdu au premier tour, donc ça fait du bien de remonter sur le podium. Je voulais finir avec la médaille d’or, mais la médaille d’argent fait du bien aussi », a confié Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard.

En finale, la judoka s’est avouée vaincue devant la Japonaise Narumi Tanioka, qui a d’abord marqué un yuko, puis confirmé sa médaille d’or avec un ippon dans la dernière portion du combat. « Au fil des minutes, on avait l’impression que la Japonaise était plus rapide et plus assurée dans ses actions », a constaté l’entraîneur canadien Januscz Pawlowski.

« Je trouvais que j’avais une très bonne prise, mais que je n’enchaînais pas assez sur des attaques. Je restais trop statique », a pour sa part affirmé la Québécoise au sujet de sa performance.

Elle reste tout de même très satisfaite de sa compétition. « Je me sentais forte physiquement et je trouvais que j’étais très présente dans mes combats. C’est positif dans ma préparation pour la suite. »

Classée deuxième au monde dans sa catégorie, la Québécoise avait eu un laissez-passer au premier tour, puis faisait face à la Chinoise Jing Tang à la ronde suivante. Elle a remporté ce combat de façon décisive en projetant sa rivale au sol après une minute et demie d’affrontement.

En quarts de finale, Beauchemin-Pinard a de nouveau été expéditive, s’imposant par ippon face à la Croate Nina Simic en seulement 45 secondes.

Au tour suivant, l’athlète de 31 ans affrontait une adversaire coriace, la Française Manon Deketer. « Elle était une opposante difficile », a précisé Pawlowski. Sa protégée l’a finalement emporté par waza-ari dans les dernières secondes du temps réglementaire.

Du côté masculin, François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) s’est dit déçu de sa journée. Il a entamé sa compétition avec une victoire par ippon après cinq minutes et demie de combat face au Kazakh Askar Narkulov.

En huitièmes de finale, il se mesurait au Russe Abdul-Kerim Tasuev. Les judokas se sont livré un combat de plus de sept minutes, qui a pris fin lorsque le Québécois a reçu un troisième shido, entraînant sa disqualification. 

« Je pense que mon adversaire est arrivé avec une stratégie très spécifique pour m’affronter et ç’a fonctionné. J’ai essayé de faire mon travail, mais je trouvais qu’il était sur la défensive. Il jouait pas mal les pénalités et la stratégie. Il est allé du côté tactique, puis il m’a eu à l’usure et j’ai perdu aux pénalités. C’est plate, mais ça fait partie du sport », a concédé l’athlète de 28 ans.

Selon Januscz Pawlowski, Gauthier-Drapeau était bien préparé, mais devra travailler sur sa vitesse et sa prise de décision en vue des prochaines compétitions.

Le Canada remporte trois médailles à la Coupe européenne junior

D’autres judokas canadiens se sont démarqués samedi, à l’occasion de la Coupe européenne junior de Mostoles, en Espagne.

D’abord, Carla Van Zyl a obtenu l’or dans la catégorie des moins de 63 kg, remportant ses cinq combats de la journée. En finale, elle a eu le dessus sur Lihi Boaron, d’Israël, grâce à un yuko marqué dans la première moitié du duel.

« La journée a commencé un peu plus difficilement pour Carla. Elle semblait un peu hésitante. Mais plus la journée avançait et plus elle prenait confiance. Ça se voyait qu’elle dominait ses adversaires. La demi-finale et la finale, qui devaient être les combats les plus difficiles parce que c’est tard dans la journée, ont été les combats où elle s’est vraiment bien imposée et a bien géré », a constaté l’entraîneur canadien, Antoine Bouchard.

Chez les moins de 73 kg, Lowan Le Bris a terminé deuxième après s’être incliné en finale face à Gigi Giunashvili, de la Géorgie. Il a conclu la journée avec quatre victoires en cinq affrontements. « Il a fait quelques longs combats et chaque fois, il a été en mesure d’aller chercher un point », a souligné son entraîneur.

De son côté, Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) a décroché la dernière médaille de la délégation canadienne, elle qui repart avec le bronze.

Elle s’est inclinée à son deuxième match de la journée, en quarts de finale, face à la Française Chloé Jean, éventuelle médaillée d’or. La judoka canadienne a ensuite remporté deux combats au repêchage pour accéder à la finale de bronze, où elle a vaincu sa compatriote, Missy Jen Dorval Mbele. Cette dernière donc a pris le cinquième rang.

Quant aux autres Canadiens en lice, Loic Beaton (-60 kg) a vu son parcours s’arrêter en huitièmes de finale, cumulant une fiche de deux victoires et d’une défaite. Chez les moins de 66 kg, Sebastien Fecteau, Eliandre Barriault-Tremblay et Jacob Element ont conclu la journée avec une fiche de 1-1. Maia Thomson (-63 kg) a également terminé la compétition avec une victoire et une défaite.

Silver for Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard

Montréal, February 28, 2026 (Sportcom) – Canadian judoka Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard won the silver medal in the under-63 kg category on Saturday at the Grand Slam in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Her fellow Québécois François Gauthier-Drapeau, however, saw his day come to a halt in the round of sixteen.

“I’m really happy because in my most recent competition in Tokyo last December, I lost in the first round, so it feels good to be back on the podium. I had my sights set on the gold medal, but the silver medal feels good too,” said Beauchemin-Pinard.

In the big final, Beauchemin-Pinard was defeated by Japan’s Narumi Tanioka, who scored an early yuko, then clinched the gold medal with an ippon as the clock began to wind down.

“With every passing minute, the Japanese competitor was getting faster and more decisive,” said Canadian coach Janusz Pawlowski.

“I thought I had some good holds, but I didn’t follow up with attacks quickly enough. I remained too still,” Beauchemin-Pinard said of her performance.

However, she is satisfied with the competition, overall. “I felt strong physically, and I was very focused during my bouts. I feel positive going forward.”

The Québécoise, who is ranked second in the world in her category, received a first-round bye before facing Jing Tang of China. She won that bout decisively, throwing Tang to the ground after a minute and a half of combat.

In the quarter-final, Beauchemin-Pinard once again disposed of her opponent expeditiously, scoring an ippon against Nina Simic of Croatia after only 45 seconds.

In the next round, the 31-year-old was pitted against a powerful judoka, Manon Deketer of France. “She was a very tough opponent,” said Pawlowski. In the final seconds of regulation time, Beauchemin-Pinard scored a waza-ari to secure the win.

Following the men’s competition, Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) expressed disappointment with his day.

He began the tournament with a victory by ippon over Askar Narkulov of Kazakhstan, after five and a half minutes of combat.

In the round of sixteen, he was up against Abdul-Kerim Tasuev of Russia. The two judokas battled it out for more than seven minutes, and the match was only decided when the Québécois received a third shido, resulting in his disqualification.

“I think [Tasuev] had a very specific strategy going into the match, and it worked. I tried to do my job, but he was very much on the defensive. He was strategic and really played the penalties aspect. He took a tactical approach, and it wore me down and I lost on penalties. It’s too bad, but it’s all part of the sport,” said 28-year-old Gauthier-Drapeau.

According to Pawlowski, Gauthier-Drapeau was well-prepared, but he should focus on his speed and his decision-making as he trains for his upcoming competitions.

Three medals for Canada at the Junior European Cup

At the Junior European Cup in Móstoles, Spain, several Canadian judokas made their mark on Saturday.

Carla Van Zyl captured gold in the under-63 kg weight division after winning all five of her bouts today. In the big final, she prevailed over Lihi Boaron of Israel thanks to a yuko she scored early in the match.

“The day got off to a bit of a tough start for Carla. She seemed hesitant at first. But as the day progressed, she appeared more confident, and she clearly dominated her opponents. The semi-final and the final, which should have been her most difficult fights since they took place late in the day, ended up being the ones she managed most effectively and won most assertively,” noted Canadian coach Antoine Bouchard.

In the men’s under-73 kg category, Lowan Le Bris finished second after bowing out to Gigi Giunashvili of Georgia in the big final. He finished the day with four wins in five matches. “A few of his bouts were quite long, but each time, he managed to score a point,” explained the coach.

In the women’s under-70 kg group, Charlie Thibault won the Canadian delegation’s final medal of the day, securing the bronze.

In her second bout of the day—the quarter-finals—she bowed out to Chloé Jean of France, who later won the gold medal. In the repechage, however, the Canadian won two matches in a row to advance to the bronze medal final, where she defeated her compatriot Missy Jen Dorval Mbele, who thus ended the day in fifth place.

Among the other Canadians in contention, Loic Beaton (-60 kg) saw his run come to an end in the round of sixteen, and he finished his day with two wins and one loss. In the under-66 kg category, Sébastien Fecteau, Eliandre Barriault-Tremblay, and Jacob Element all ended the day with 1-1 records. Maia Thomson (-63 kg) also ended the competition with one win and one loss.
