Montréal, 1^er mars 2025 – Catherine Toshkov et Sara-Anne Beaudin ont toutes les deux été en mesure d’atteindre une finale de bronze samedi, chez les moins de 63 kg, à la Coupe européenne junior de Malaga, en Espagne.

Toshkov a été expéditive lors de ce dernier duel, n’ayant besoin que de 9 secondes pour venir à bout de son adversaire, la Portugaise Maria Dias. Il s’agit d’un premier podium pour l’athlète de 19 ans lors d’une Coupe continentale junior à sa toute première compétition dans sa nouvelle catégorie.

La Québécoise a amorcé sa journée en force, remportant ses deux premiers duels pour obtenir son billet pour les quarts de finale où elle avait rendez-vous avec la Britannique Millie Bayliss.

Le duel a eu des allures de marathon et s’est prolongé en temps supplémentaire où Toshkov a finalement eu le dessus grâce à un waza-ari alors qu’elle avait déjà reçu deux pénalités.

En demi-finales, Toshkov a toutefois baissé pavillon face à l’Espagnole Lucia Carpio Fernandez, éventuelle médaillée d’or, afin de prendre la direction d’une finale de bronze.

« Catherine a été excellente aujourd’hui, d’autant plus qu’il s’agit de sa première compétition chez les moins de 63 kg, elle qui se battait auparavant chez les moins de 57 kg. Je sens qu’en demi-finales, elle a perdu sa concentration quelques instants, mais elle dominait complètement le duel avant cela. Elle s’est bien ajustée à la nouvelle catégorie et je crois que le futur sera intéressant pour elle », a mentionné l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.

De son côté, Beaudin a vaincu Maria Dias à son premier combat du jour avant d’enchaîner avec une deuxième victoire consécutive face à la Géorgienne Maia Bidzinashvili. En demi-finales, la Québécoise a été battue par la Britannique Sophie Wood, médaillée d’argent en fin de journée.

Lors de son combat pour une médaille de bronze, Beaudin a été surprise par l’Israélienne Lihi Boaron, qui l’a emporté par ippon.

« C’est la première compétition internationale de Sara-Anne et elle a prouvé tout son potentiel aujourd’hui. Elle a été dominante lors de ses deux premiers combats. En demi-finale et en finale de bronze, je crois que l’expérience de ses adversaires a fait la différence, mais nous sommes fiers de ce que nous avons vu de sa part », a indiqué Mehmedovic.

Également en action du côté féminin, Abigail Smith a été limitée à un seul combat chez les moins de 78 kg.

Chez les hommes, Fahd Fithane (-73 kg) a obtenu le meilleur résultat canadien du jour avec une cinquième place, lui qui s’est incliné en finale de bronze devant le Britannique Irakli Goginashvili en prolongation.

Fithane avait amorcé sa journée avec deux victoires avant de plier l’échine devant le Géorgien Gigi Giunashvili en quarts de finale. Le Québécois a toutefois persévéré au repêchage, signant des victoires face au Lithuanien Deividas Jovsa et au Britannique Ross McWatt pour accéder au duel pour l’une des médailles de bronze à l’enjeu.

« Fahd a été très bon aujourd’hui, mais j’aurais vraiment aimé le voir sur le podium. Il menait avec un waza-ari à son dernier duel, mais son adversaire a été en mesure de revenir de l’arrière pour reprendre le dessus. Ç’a été une très bonne journée pour lui tout de même », a mentionné l’entraîneur.

Luke Thompson (-66 kg) est le seul autre représentant de l’unifolié à avoir remporté un duel samedi à Malaga. Il a vaincu Khaled Alkandari, du Koweït, avant de s’incliner au tour suivant face au Polonais Franciszek Kozlik.

Muhammad Turajev (-60 kg), Dylan De Jesus (-66 kg), Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg) et Alexis Kearney (-66 kg) ont tous été défaits dès leur premier combat.

L’action reprendra dimanche à Malaga. Yehor Paladii (-100 kg), Angelina McCristall (-48 kg), Valeria Kostrovets (-52 kg), Hayden Thibeault (-57 kg) et Carla Van Zyl (-57 kg) seront les Canadiens présents.

Catherine Toshkov Sets the Tone in her Under-63 kg Debut

Montréal, March 1, 2025 – At the Junior European Cup in Málaga, Spain, on Saturday, Canadians Catherine Toshkov and Sara-Anne Beaudin advanced to the two bronze medal finals in the under-63 kg weight division.

In her quest to capture the medal, Toshkov needed only nine seconds to dispatch of her final opponent, Maria Dias of Portugal. It was the 19-year-old judoka’s first career podium finish at a Junior Continental Cup, and her first competition in her new weight class. She formerly fought in the under-57 kg category.

The Québécoise had a strong start to her day, winning her first two bouts to advance to the quarter-finals, where she faced Millie Bayliss of Great Britain. That marathon match went into overtime, where Toshkov, despite having received two penalties, nevertheless triumphed by waza-ari.

However, in the semi-finals, she bowed out to Lucia Carpio Fernandez of Spain, who later won the gold medal. Toshkov therefore moved on to one of the bronze medal finals.

“Catherine was excellent today, especially considering that it was her first competition in the under-63 kg weight category. I got the impression that during the semi-final, she lost her focus for a few moments, but before that, she had completely dominated the bout. She has adjusted well to her new weight class, and I think her future looks bright,” said Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

Beaudin, who had defeated Dias in her first clash of the day, followed up with a second-round win against Maia Bidzinashvili of Georgia. However, after losing to Great Britain’s Sophie Wood in the semi-finals, the Québécoise faced a second defeat against Lihi Boaron of Israel, who won the bronze medal by ippon. Wood went on to secure the category’s silver medal.

“It was Sara-Anne’s first international competition, and she really showed her potential today. She dominated her first two fights, and in the semi-final and the bronze medal final, I think it was her opponents’ experience that made the difference. We’re proud of what we saw from her today,” said Mehmedovic.

In the women’s under-78 kg tournament, Abigail Smith was halted in her first and only bout of the day.

Fahd Fithane (-73 kg) obtained Canada’s best result of the day in the men’s competition, finishing fifth after bowing out to Irakli Goginashvili of Great Britain in overtime in one of the bronze medal finals.

Fithane had begun his day with two consecutive victories, before losing to Georgia’s Gigi Giunashvili in the quarter-finals. In the repechage, the Québécois soldiered on, dispatching of Lithuania’s Deividas Jovsa and Great Britain’s Ross McWatt to claim his spot in the bronze medal match.

“Fahd was great today, but I really would have liked to see him on the podium. In his final fight, he was leading with a waza-ari, but his opponent managed to come from behind and take the lead. Nevertheless, he had a great day,” said the coach.

Luke Thompson (-66 kg) was the only other Canadian male to win a bout on Saturday in Málaga. He defeated Khaled Alkandari of Kuwait before bowing out to Franciszek Kozlik of Poland.
