Ce n’est que partie remise pour Gauthier-Drapeau

Montréal, 22 octobre 2022 – François Gauthier-Drapeau est passé bien près de monter sur le podium au Grand Chelem d’Abou Dabi, samedi, aux Émirats arabes unis. En avance dans son combat pour une médaille de bronze des moins de 81 kg, le Canadien a voulu en remettre pour boucler la boucle, mais son plan s’est retourné contre lui, le menant plutôt à une cinquième place.

Gauthier-Drapeau a affronté Mihail Latisev, de la Moldavie, en fin de journée. Il a réussi un waza-ari après un peu plus d’une minute de combat, puis son opposant a répliqué afin de créer l’égalité.

« J’avais mis au point une stratégie avec mon entraîneur et je voulais être prudent, parce que c’est un adversaire assez rapide. Je me suis toutefois laissé emporter et j’ai pris des risques inutiles », a raconté François Gauthier-Drapeau.

Ce dernier a retenté la manœuvre qui lui avait permis de s’inscrire au pointage à quelques reprises et il s’en est fallu de peu pour qu’elle fonctionne à nouveau. Latisev est toutefois parvenu à le contrer et à marquer un ippon pour mettre fin au combat.

« J’aurais dû varier mes attaques pour le surprendre », a admis Gauthier-Drapeau après le duel.

L’athlète de 24 ans n’avait pas obtenu les résultats souhaités durant l’été et espérait se reprendre aux Émirats arabes unis. Ces premiers affrontements lui ont d’ailleurs permis de retrouver confiance et d’appliquer diverses leçons de ses entraîneurs, apprises récemment.

« Je n’avais pas le meilleur niveau de confiance et j’ai pris le temps de me remettre dans le bain. Je me sentais plutôt bien aujourd’hui, je voulais me reprendre et j’étais content d’avoir une nouvelle chance. »

Auteur de deux victoires signées d’entrée de jeu face au Portoricain Adrian Gandia et au Suisse Aurelien Bonferroni, Gauthier-Drapeau n’a pu en faire autant lorsqu’il s’est mesuré au représentant de l’Azerbaïdjan Zelim Tckaev.

Ce revers a envoyé le Québécois au repêchage, où il a vaincu le Néerlandais Frank De Wit pour ensuite se battre pour une place sur le podium. Il retournera maintenant à l’entraînement avec la ferme intention de finir en force lors de ses prochaines compétitions.

« J’ai fait quelques erreurs, mais je retiens du positif. J’aurais pu l’emporter à la toute fin. Je vais devoir m’améliorer sur le plan tactique », a-t-il conclu.

Dans la même catégorie, Mohab ElNahas a terminé la journée avec une fiche de deux victoires et une défaite. Il l’a emporté face au Britannique Lachlan Moorhead et Eljan Hajiyev, de l’Azerbaïdjan, avant de s’incliner lui aussi contre Latisev.

Arthur Margelidon, qui devait combattre chez les moins de 73 kg samedi, n’a finalement pas pris part à l’événement.

Le Grand Chelem d’Abou Dabi se poursuivra dimanche. Shady ElNahas sera en action dans la catégorie des moins de 100 kg, tout comme Kyle Reyes, médaillé d’argent aux derniers Championnats du monde.

Only a Matter of Time for Gauthier-Drapeau

Montréal, October 22, 2022 – François Gauthier-Drapeau came very close to stepping onto the podium at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday. After taking the lead in his under-81 kg bronze medal match, the Canadian attempted to double down to clinch the bout, but his plan backfired and he finished in fifth place.​​​​​​​

In his final bout of the day, Gauthier-Drapeau was pitted against Mihail Latisev of Moldova. Just over a minute into the fight, he scored a waza-ari, but his opponent quickly retaliated to tie up the match.

“I had worked out a strategy with my coach, and I wanted to play it safe because [Latisev] is a pretty fast opponent. But I let myself get carried away and I took unnecessary risks,” explained Gauthier-Drapeau.

He tried the same manoeuvre that had allowed him to score a few times before, and it almost worked again. However, Latisev was able to counter him and score an ippon to end the fight.

“I should have used a variety of attacks be more unpredictable,” admitted Gauthier-Drapeau, following the match.

This past summer, the 24-year-old did not achieve the results he had wished for and he hoped to make a comeback of sorts in the United Arab Emirates. His first few bouts helped him regain confidence and apply some of the lessons he had recently learned from his coaches.

“My confidence was kind of lacking, so I took some time to brush up on my skills. I felt pretty good today. I wanted to get back on track and I was glad to have another chance.”

In the early rounds of today’s tournament, Gauthier-Drapeau won his first two matches against Adrian Gandia of Puerto Rico and Aurelien Bonferroni of Switzerland, but was unable to repeat the feat against Zelim Tckaev of Azerbaijan.

The loss sent him to the repechage, where he defeated Frank De Wit of the Netherlands to advance to the bronze medal final. He now plans to pursue his training, with the firm intention of achieving strong finishes in his upcoming competitions.

“I made some errors, but I’m trying to look on the bright side. I could have won that last one. I’ll have to improve my tactical skills,” he concluded.

In the same weight division, Mohab El Nahas finished the day with a record of two wins and one loss. He defeated Lachlan Moorhead of Great Britain and Eljan Hajiyev of Azerbaijan before bowing out to Latisev.

Arthur Margelidon was scheduled to fight in the under-73 kg category on Saturday but did not compete.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam will continue on Sunday. Shady El Nahas will be in action in the under-100 kg weight class, as will Kyle Reyes, who won a silver medal at the most recent World Championships.
