La recrue Carla Van Zyl mène le Canada avec une septième place

Montréal, 5 octobre 2025 – La Britanno-Colombienne Carla Van Zyl a fait belle impression à ses premiers Championnats du monde juniors de judo. Dimanche, à Lima, au Pérou, l’athlète s’est classée septième chez les moins de 57 kg.

À son quatrième et dernier duel du jour, la jeune femme a été défaite par ippon en prolongation par la Slovène Jevgenija Gajic. En début de journée, elle avait battu coup sur coup la Péruvienne Luciana Julca et la Suisse Mirja Pollheimer avant de s’incliner face à la Brésilienne Bianca Reis, en quart de finale.

« C’est une très bonne performance pour Carla, surtout si on tient compte qu’elle est à sa première année junior. C’est une des plus jeunes ici », a analysé l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Bouchard à propos de celle qui avait été médaillée de bronze aux récents Jeux panaméricains juniors disputés à Asuncion, au Paraguay.

« Elle a fait quelques classements en Europe cette année et c’est un de nos très bons espoirs au Canada, alors on sait qu’elle a énormément de potentiel. Aujourd’hui (dimanche), elle a bien su s’imposer pour se rendre relativement loin. […] Avec un peu plus d’expérience, je pense qu’elle aurait pu se battre pour aller chercher une médaille. »

Dans cette même catégorie, Laurence Gagnon s’est butée à l’Italienne Michela Terranova, championne européenne junior en titre, à son premier combat. La Québécoise a poussé l’affrontement jusqu’en prolongation où son adversaire l’a projetée au sol.

« L’Italienne était la première tête de série. Laurence a fait un bon combat et ça s’est joué sur peu et c’est une petite erreur de Laurence qui lui a coûté le match. C’était une grosse pointure », a ajouté Bouchard.

Chez les garçons, l’Albertain Luke Thomson (-66 kg) a amorcé sa journée avec une victoire contre le Péruvien Hector Mieres pour ensuite s’incliner face à l’Ouzbek Dilshodbek Hamroyev.

« Lui aussi il affrontait une première tête de série (Hamroyev) et Luke a fait un très bon combat. Il a fait une erreur où il s’est fait contrer, mais il s’en est quand même bien sorti et il avait gagné son premier duel relativement facilement », a précisé l’entraîneur.

Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), Vincent Nepton (-60 kg) et Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg) ont tous vu leur parcours prendre fin après avoir perdu leur seul affrontement du jour.

Lundi, Catherine Toshkov et Loika Robertson seront du tableau féminin des moins de 63 kg. Chez les garçons, Fahd Fithane va combattre dans la catégorie des moins de 73 kg, tandis que Artem Neyolov et Arthur Karpukov seront en action chez les moins de 81 kg.

Rookie Carla Van Zyl Leads Canada with Seventh Place

Montréal, October 5, 2025 – British Columbia’s Carla Van Zyl made an big impression at her first Junior World Judo Championships, where she finished seventh in the under-57 kg category on Sunday in Lima, Peru.

In her fourth and final bout of the day, the Canadian judoka bowed out to Slovenia’s Jevgenija Gajic, who won by ippon. However, she had earlier defeated Peru’s Luciana Julca and Switzerland’s Mirja Pollheimer in back-to-back matches, before losing to Bianca Reis of Brazil in the quarter-finals.

“Carla performed very well, especially considering that it’s her first year as a junior. She’s one of the youngest [athletes] here,” said Canadian coach Antoine Bouchard. Van Zyl recently won a bronze medal at the Junior Pan-American Games in Asunción, Paraguay.

“She ranked in Europe a few times this year, and she’s one of Canada’s top prospects, so we know she has a lot of potential. She did well today [Sunday] and was able to advance pretty far. [. . .] With a little more experience under her belt, I think she would have been a contender for a medal.” 

In the same weight class, Laurence Gagnon began her day by facing off against Michela Terranova of Italy, the reigning junior European champion. The Québécoise pushed the match into overtime, where her opponent threw her to the ground.

“[Terranova] was the top seed. Laurence fought well and it ended up being pretty tight, but Laurence made a slight error that cost her the match. She was a tough opponent,” added Bouchard.

On the men’s side, Alberta’s Luke Thomson (-66 kg) got his day off to a good start with a victory over Peru’s Hector Mieres, but then lost to Dilshodbek Hamroyev of Uzbekistan.

“[Luke] also had to fight a top-seeded opponent (Hamroyev), but he did a good job. He made an error that allowed his opponent to counter-attack, but still, he did well, and earlier, he had won his first bout relatively easily,” explained the coach.

Ekaterina Danilkov (-48 kg), Vincent Nepton (-60 kg), and Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg) were all eliminated in their first bouts of the day.

On Monday, Catherine Toshkov and Loika Robertson will compete in the women’s under-63 kg division. In the men’s tournament, Fahd Fithane will fight in the under-73 kg weight class, while Artem Neyolov and Arthur Karpukov test their mettle in the under-81 kg category.
