Montréal, 15 juillet 2022 – Christa Deguchi ne s’est pas éternisée sur les tatamis en finale du Grand Prix de Zagreb, en Croatie. Moins de deux minutes ont suffi à la judoka canadienne pour mettre la main sur la médaille d’or des moins de 57 kg vendredi, la quatrième de sa carrière en Grand Prix.
De retour à la compétition depuis quelques mois, Deguchi s’est présentée sans complexe devant la Géorgienne Eteri Liparteliani, en grande finale. La représentante de l’unifolié a résisté à une manœuvre de son adversaire avant de passer à l’offensive. Après trois tentatives contrées par Liparteliani, Deguchi a réussi à la projeter au sol pour l’emporter par ippon, 1 minute 52 secondes après le début du combat.
La championne n’était pas montée sur le podium depuis le 1er avril 2021, où elle avait obtenu l’or à Antalya.
« Je suis contente de retourner sur le podium. Ça faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas décroché une médaille d’or ! » a-t-elle déclaré.
« Je sens que je me suis mieux battue qu’à ma dernière compétition en Turquie, en avril. Je veux maintenant garder ce momentum et j’ai hâte aux Jeux du Commonwealth qui auront lieu dans quelques semaines, puis aux Championnats du monde cet automne. »
Vendredi, elle a entamé son parcours avec une victoire par ippon face à la Polonaise Arleta Podolak. Ses deux affrontements suivants se sont décidés en prolongation, où elle a vaincu coup sur coup l’Italienne Veronica Toniolo et la Belge Mina Libeer.
En demi-finale, la Canadienne n’a eu besoin que de 70 secondes pour venir à bout de la Slovène Kaja Kajzer. Une domination qui a mis la table en vue de sa victoire en finale.
Sa sœur cadette, Kelly Deguchi, a fait face à un défi de taille en début de journée, chez les moins de 52 kg. Elle a été éliminée par la Japonaise Uta Abe, championne olympique qui s’est ensuite dirigée vers la médaille d’or à Zagreb.
Julien Frascadore a lui aussi été limité à un duel dans la catégorie des moins de 60 kg. Il a perdu par ippon contre Hakberdi Jumayev, du Turkménistan.
Le Grand Prix de Zagreb reprendra samedi. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Mohab ElNahas (-81 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) et Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg) seront à surveiller.

Christa Deguchi Claims Crown in Under Two Minutes
Montréal, July 15, 2022 – Christa Deguchi was expeditious on the tatamis in the under-57 kg final at the Zagreb Grand Prix in Croatia on Friday. The Canadian judoka needed less than two minutes to clinch her fourth career Grand Prix gold medal.
Having returned to competition just a few months ago, Deguchi did not hold back in her grand final bout against Georgia’s Eteri Liparteliani. Deguchi deflected a manoeuvre by her opponent before launching an offensive. After her first three attempts were thwarted by Liparteliani, Deguchi managed to throw her to the ground to win by ippon, one minute and 52 seconds into the fight.
The champion had not set foot on the podium since April 1, 2021, when she won gold in Antalya.
“I’m glad to be back on the podium. It’s been a long time since I won a gold medal!” she stated. “I feel like I fought better than I did in my last competition, in Turkey, in April. Now I’d like to maintain my momentum, and I’m looking forward to the Commonwealth Games, which are coming up in a few weeks, and the World Championships this fall.”
Deguchi began her day on Friday with a win by ippon over Arleta Podolak of Poland. In her next two matches, she defeated Veronica Toniolo of Italy and Mina Libeer of Belgium, both in overtime.
In the semi-final, the Canadian dispatched of Slovenia’s Kaja Kajzer in less than 70 seconds. The scene was thus set for her victory in the final.
Her younger sister Kelly Deguchi faced a tough challenge early in the day in the under-52 kg class. She was eliminated by Japan’s Uta Abe, current Olympic champion, who later won the gold medal in Zagreb.
Julien Frascadore was also eliminated after one fight in the under-60 kg category. He lost by ippon to Hakberdi Jumayev of Turkmenistan.
The Grand Prix will continue in Zagreb on Saturday. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Mohab El Nahas (-81 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) and Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg) will all hit the tatamis.
