Montréal, 16 février 2024 – Médaillée d’argent il y a deux semaines au Grand Chelem de Paris, Christa Deguchi a connu une autre excellente journée de travail vendredi, cette fois du côté du Grand Chelem de Bakou, en Azerbaïdjan. L’Albertaine a été intraitable et s’est frayé un chemin jusqu’à la plus haute marche du podium chez les moins de 57 kg.

Après un combat âprement disputé en demi-finale où elle a vaincu la Géorgienne Eteri Liparteliani, Deguchi n’a pas eu à disputer de duel en finale puisque son adversaire, la Kosovare Nora Gjakova, était dans l’incapacité de combattre en raison d’une blessure. Quatre victoires auront donc été nécessaires afin d’être couronnée championne.

« Christa est contente d’avoir obtenu la médaille d’or. De son propre aveu, ça n’a pas été sa journée la plus spectaculaire, mais elle a persisté pour trouver le moyen de gagner à chacun de ses combats. Elle est capable de gagner face aux meilleures au monde, même si ce n’est pas tout à fait sa meilleure journée, c’est vraiment bon signe », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.

La Canadienne a amorcé son parcours en force avec deux victoires expéditives contre l’Émiratie Altantsetseg Batsukh ainsi que face à la Polonaise Julia Kowalczyk. La tâche a été plus ardue lors de son duel de quart de finale, mais elle a tout de même eu raison de l’Ukrainienne Daria Bilodid en temps supplémentaire.

« Elle a marqué des ippons convaincants et de façon très rapide lors de ses deux premiers duels. En quart et en demi-finale, elle a dû creuser plus profond dans ses ressources. Ç’a été des combats plus difficiles à tous les points de vue, mais elle a été en mesure de l’emporter de brillante façon », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.

Bien installée en tête du classement mondial de sa catégorie, Deguchi a atteint la finale à ses sept dernières participations en Grand Chelem, récoltant la médaille d’or à trois reprises durant cette séquence.

Deux autres judokas canadiens étaient en action vendredi.

Chez les moins de 52 kg, Kelly Deguchi a remporté ses deux premiers affrontements du jour avant de s’incliner au troisième tour face à la Croate Ana Viktorija Puljiz. Deguchi n’a pas été en mesure de se reprendre une fois arrivée au repêchage, alors qu’elle a subi la défaite devant Aydan Valiyeva, de l’Azerbaïdjan.

« Ça faisait longtemps que Kelly n’avait pas terminé dans le top-7 en Grand Chelem. Il y a beaucoup de points positifs. C’est certain qu’on aurait aimé qu’elle se rende jusqu’au bout de la journée, mais on regarde surtout le côté positif », a indiqué l’entraîneur.

Du côté masculin, Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) a d’abord signé une victoire au premier tour face au Chypriote Georgios Balarjishvili avant d’être défait par Yashar Najafov, de l’Azerbaïdjan. Najafov, sixième au monde, a terminé le tournoi avec l’une des médailles de bronze de la catégorie.

 « Julien a remporté une belle victoire en début de journée contre un adversaire redoutable. Najafov est un des meilleurs en ce moment, mais Julien a été très bon contre lui ! Il s’est fait projeter avec environ une minute à faire au combat et ç’a complètement changé l’allure de l’affrontement. Il progresse toujours », a conclu Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Le Grand Chelem de Bakou se poursuivra samedi alors que Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg) et François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) seront les Canadiens en action dans la capitale azérie.

Christa Deguchi Back on Top!

Montréal, February 16, 2024 – After taking silver two weeks ago at the Grand Slam in Paris, Christa Deguchi put in another excellent day’s work on Friday, this time at the Grand Slam in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Albertan was unstoppable, making her way unhindered to the top of the podium in the under-57 kg weight category.

Following a hard-fought semi-final in which she defeated Eteri Liparteliani of Georgia, Deguchi did not have to compete in the final since her opponent, Nora Gjakova of Kosovo, had to default due to an injury. Consequently, it took Deguchi four victories to be crowned champion.

“Christa is very happy to have won the gold medal. By her own admission, today wasn’t one of her best days ever, but she kept pushing, and she found a way to win each of her bouts. That she was able to beat some of the best in the world, even though it wasn’t exactly her best day, is a very good sign,” said Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Deguchi got off to a flying start this morning, with two quick wins against Altantsetseg Batsukh of the United Arab Emirates and Julia Kowalczyk of Poland. Things got a little tougher in the quarter-final, but she nevertheless managed to edge out Daria Bilodid of Ukraine in overtime.

“In her first two fights, Christa scored two impressive ippons very quickly. But in the quarter-final and the semi-final, she had to dig a little deeper to come out ahead. They were difficult fights in every sense, but she prevailed brilliantly,” added Valois-Fortier.

Deguchi, who is firmly established at the top of the rankings in her weight division, has reached the big final at her last seven Grand Slams, and has won the gold medal three of those times.

Two other Canadian judokas were in action on Friday.

In the under-52 kg division, Kelly Deguchi won her first two bouts before bowing out to Ana Viktorija Puljiz of Croatia in the third round. She was unable to bounce back in the repechage, where she lost to Aydan Valiyeva of Azerbaijan.

“It had been a while since Kelly finished in the top seven at a Grand Slam. There were a lot of positive elements. Of course, we would have liked her to go all the way, but we’re focusing on the positive,” noted the coach.

On the men’s side, Julien Frascadore (-66 kg) defeated Georgios Balarjishvili of Cyprus in the first round before losing to Yashar Najafov of Azerbaijan in the next. Najafov, who is sixth in the world, went on to win one of the category’s bronze medals.

“Julien pulled off an impressive win early in the day against a formidable opponent. And Najafov is one of the best there is right now, but Julien was great against him, too! But with about a minute to go in the match, Julien was thrown, and it completely turned the tide. He’s continuing to improve,” concluded Valois-Fortier.

The Baku Grand Slam will continue on Saturday. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), and François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) will all hit the tatamis.
