Jessica Klimkait rebondit et rafle une médaille de bronze
Montréal, 2 décembre 2023 – Christa Deguchi a une fois de plus démontré l’étendue de son talent samedi, au Grand Chelem de Tokyo, où elle combattait devant de nombreux visages familiers. Au sommet de son art, la championne du monde et actuelle numéro un du classement de l’IJF a offert tout un spectacle qui s’est conclu avec la médaille d’or chez les moins de 57 kg.
« Christa a tout simplement été phénoménale aujourd’hui (samedi) ! Elle a été en plein contrôle du premier jusqu’au dernier combat et elle n’a jamais été inquiétée. C’était vraiment une brillante performance », a résumé l’entraîneur Antoine Valois-Fortier au terme du tournoi.
Après avoir battu coup sur coup la Britannique Lele Nairne par ippon et la Japonaise Ayami Takano par waza-ari, Deguchi a su élever son judo d’un cran pour ses combats du carré d’as.
Elle avait d’abord rendez-vous en demi-finale avec la Géorgienne Eteri Liparteliani, huitième au monde, qu’elle a vaincue par ippon après seulement 34 secondes.
Deguchi a ensuite mis un point d’exclamation à sa journée en utilisant la même recette lors de la grande finale, où elle se mesurait à la Brésilienne Jessica Lima. Cette dernière n’a pu que se défendre devant les nombreuses attaques de l’Albertaine qui n’a mis que 55 secondes pour concrétiser son triomphe par ippon.
« Je pense qu’on peut dire que Christa était au sommet de sa forme aujourd’hui. Elle a été particulièrement dominante lors de ses deux dernières victoires et c’est de bon augure pour la suite de la saison », a poursuivi Valois-Fortier, qui a aidé sa protégée à faire tomber la pression en début de journée.
« De son propre aveu, Christa était un peu plus nerveuse pour ce tournoi, a confié l’entraîneur. Elle avait plusieurs membres de sa famille et plusieurs commanditaires présents pour l’occasion, alors c’est sûr que ça vient ajouter quelque chose de spécial. Je lui ai juste dit de demeurer dans le moment présent et d’utiliser ça positivement. C’est facile à dire, mais elle a bien réussi à le faire et elle était très fière de sa performance ! »
Avant de se frotter à Deguchi dans le duel ultime, Lima avait défait Jessica Klimkait en prolongation dans l’autre demi-finale de la catégorie. L’Ontarienne et deuxième au classement mondial a cependant rebondi de belle manière contre l’Israélienne Timna Nelson Levy. Elle a gagné par waza-ari et a mérité une médaille de bronze quelques heures plus tard.
« Jessica avait un tirage difficile et ç’a été une journée très exigeante pour elle. Je pense que la fatigue s’est accumulée au fil des combats, ce qui explique en partie sa défaite contre la Brésilienne qui a saisi sa chance de marquer au bon moment. Par contre, Jessica s’est très bien reprise. Ça démontre très bien sa force de caractère », a analysé Valois-Fortier à propos de celle qui a dû affronter quatre rivales du top-20 mondial lors de ce Grand Chelem.
Gauthier-Drapeau « surpris par un nouvel adversaire »
François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) a obtenu le meilleur résultat canadien du jour chez les hommes avec une cinquième place. Le Québécois a démarré son tournoi sur les chapeaux de roues, remportant rapidement ses trois premiers duels par ippon afin d’atteindre la demi-finale.
Il avait alors rendez-vous avec un rival bien connu, soit le Sud-Coréen Joonhwan Lee, qui pointe tout juste devant lui au quatrième rang du classement mondial. Les deux judokas se sont livré un duel à la hauteur du talent présent sur le tatami et c’est finalement Lee qui a eu le dessus au pointage à l’issue des quatre minutes de temps règlementaire.
Gauthier-Drapeau a tenté de se reprendre dans une finale de bronze, cette fois contre un adversaire qu’il n’avait jamais croisé auparavant, l’athlète individuel neutre David Karapetyan. Celui-ci a su tirer profit de cet élément pour l’emporter par ippon et reléguer le Canadien en cinquième place.
« C’est dommage parce que François ne termine pas sur le podium, mais ça demeure un très bon tournoi pour lui, surtout avec trois solides ippons en début de journée », a tenu à souligner Antoine Valois-Fortier.
« Pour le reste, c’étaient des combats très serrés et il a suivi le plan de match tout au long des affrontements. Contre le Sud-Coréen, tout s’est joué dans les derniers instants, puis, en finale de bronze, il a été surpris par un nouvel adversaire. Il ne l’avait jamais vu et cette expérience lui sera bénéfique pour son prochain combat contre lui », a-t-il ajouté en guise de conclusion.
Notons que les Québécois Arthur Margelidon et Louis Krieber-Gagnon étaient eux aussi en action samedi.
Inscrit chez les moins de 73 kg, Margelidon a conclu avec une fiche d’une victoire et un revers, subi contre un éventuel médaillé de bronze, le Géorgien Giorgi Terashvili.
Pour sa part, Krieber-Gagnon n’a pu trouver le chemin de la victoire chez les moins de 90 kg, baissant pavillon d’entrée de jeu face au Suédois Marcus Nyman.
Le Grand Chelem de Tokyo se terminera dimanche avec la présentation des tournois dans les huit catégories restantes. Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg), Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Julien Frascadore (-66 kg), Shady ElNahas (-100 kg), Kyles Reyes (-100 kg) et John Jr Messe A Bessong (+100 kg) fouleront les tatamis pour l’occasion.

Christa Deguchi perfect in front of friends and family
Montréal, December 2nd, 2023 – Christa Deguchi once again demonstrated the extent of her talent on Saturday at the Tokyo Grand Slam, where she fought in front of many familiar faces. At the top of her game, the world champion and current IJF number one put on quite a show and won the gold medal in the under 57 kg category.
“Christa was simply phenomenal today (Saturday)! She was in complete control from the first to the last bout and was never worried. It was a really brilliant performance”, summed up coach Antoine Valois-Fortier at the end of the tournament.
After back-to-back wins over Britain’s Lele Nairne by ippon and Japan’s Ayami Takano by waza-ari, Deguchi took her judo to the next level for her final two bouts.
Her semi-final opponent was Georgia’s Eteri Liparteliani, ranked eighth in the world, whom she defeated by ippon after just 34 seconds.
Deguchi then put an exclamation mark on her day by using the same recipe in the final, where she was up against Brazil’s Jessica Lima. The latter could only defend herself against the numerous attacks of the Albertan, who took just 55 seconds to complete her triumph by ippon.
“I think it’s fair to say that Christa was at the top of her game today. She was particularly dominant in her last two wins, and that bodes well for the rest of the season”, added Valois-Fortier, who helped her protégée take the pressure off early in the day.
“By her own admission, Christa was a little more nervous for this tournament, confessed the coach. She had several family members and sponsors in attendance, so that added something special. I just told her to stay in the moment and use it positively. It’s easy to say, but she did it well and was very proud of her performance!”
Before clashing with Deguchi in the final duel, Lima had defeated Jessica Klimkait in overtime in the category’s other semi-final. However, the Ontarian world number two bounced back in fine style against Israel’s Timna Nelson Levy. She won by waza-ari and earned a bronze medal a few hours later.
“Jessica had a difficult draw and it was a very demanding day for her. I think fatigue built up over the course of the bouts, which partly explains why she lost to the Brazilian, who seized her chance to score at the right moment. On the other hand, she recovered very well. It really shows her strength of character,” commented Valois-Fortier about the young Canadian, who had to face four top-20 rivals at this Grand Slam.
Gauthier-Drapeau “surprised by a new opponent”
François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) achieved the best Canadian result of the day in the men’s category with a fifth-place finish. The Quebecer got his tournament off to a flying start, quickly winning his first three matches by ippon to reach the semi-finals.
He was then up against a well-known rival, South Korea’s Joonhwan Lee, who is just ahead of him in fourth place in the world rankings. The two judokas engaged in a duel worthy of their talent, but it was Lee who came out on top after four minutes of regulation time.
Gauthier-Drapeau tried to bounce back in the bronze final against an opponent he had never met before, neutral individual athlete David Karapetyan. The latter took advantage of this element of surprise to win by ippon and relegate the Canadian to fifth place.
“It’s unfortunate because François didn’t finish on the podium, but it was still a very good tournament for him, especially with three solid ippons at the start of the day”, insisted Antoine Valois-Fortier.
“The other fights were close, and he followed the game plan throughout the day. Against the South Korean, everything came down to the final moments, then in the bronze final, he was surprised by a new opponent. He’d never seen him before, and this experience will stand him in good stead for their next encounter”, he concluded.
Quebecers Arthur Margelidon and Louis Krieber-Gagnon were also in action on Saturday.
Competing in the under-73 kg category, Margelidon finished with a record of one win and one loss, which came to eventual bronze medallist Giorgi Terashvili of Georgia.
As for Krieber-Gagnon, he couldn’t find the path to victory in the under-90 kg class, losing to Marcus Nyman of Sweden right from the start.
The Tokyo Grand Slam concludes on Sunday with the presentation of the tournaments in the eight remaining categories. Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg), Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Julien Frascadore (-66 kg), Shady ElNahas (-100 kg), Kyles Reyes (-100 kg) and John Jr Messe A Bessong (+100 kg) will be stepping on the tatamis for the occasion.
