Montréal, 15 mars 2025 – Melody Grenier a tenu le fort dans une éreintante journée de compétition à la Coupe européenne cadet de Porec, en Croatie, samedi, afin de se frayer un chemin jusqu’à la troisième marche du podium chez les moins de 52 kg.

Face à la Kosovare Sidorela Dodaj, Grenier a été en mesure de marquer un yuko dès les premiers instants du combat. Elle s’est ensuite bien défendue, maîtrisant chacune des attaques de son adversaire pour l’emporter lorsque les quatre minutes réglementaires se sont écoulées.

« En finale de bronze, elle a marqué très rapidement et elle a super bien géré le reste du combat. Elle a maintenu son avance jusqu’à la toute fin. Elle peut être fière d’elle, ça démontre une belle progression et j’espère qu’elle va continuer sur cette lancée », a lancé l’entraîneur canadien Alexandre Émond.

Après avoir remporté son premier combat en 47 secondes face à l’Italienne Alisia Bernabei au premier tour, Grenier a poursuivi sa lancée à la ronde suivante en ayant le dessus sur la Slovène Nusa Samec pour obtenir son billet pour les quarts de finale.

Grenier a ensuite subi la défaite face à Aysun Mammadova, de l’Azerbaïdjan. La Québécoise n’a toutefois pas eu l’intention de baisser le bras et s’est immédiatement tournée vers le repêchage où elle a remporté ses deux premiers combats afin de se retrouver dans un duel pour une médaille de bronze.

« C’est une compétition où il y a énormément d’athlètes. Elle a dû faire six combats pour aller chercher une médaille, alors c’est impressionnant. Ça n’a pas été une journée extrêmement facile, mais elle a su s’adapter à chacune des adversaires. Elle trouvait des solutions dans des combats plus serrés. Elle va certainement grandir de cette expérience », a ajouté l’entraîneur.

Également en action samedi à Porec, Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg) a remporté son premier duel du jour face au Hongrois Csanad Panczel avant de s’incliner au tour suivant devant l’Italien Domenico Celotto.

Dans la même catégorie, Muhammad Turajev a baissé pavillon en lever de rideau contre le Géorgien Daviti Kaibulashvili.

L’action reprendra dimanche alors que Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg), Dilana Gesa (-57 kg), Maia Thomson (-63 kg) et Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) seront les représentants de l’unifolié en action.

Five Wins and a Bronze Medal for Melody Grenier

Montréal, March 15, 2025 – Melody Grenier stood firm throughout a gruelling day of competition at the Cadet European Cup in Poreč, Croatia, on Saturday, battling her way to the third step of the podium in the under-52 kg category.

After scoring a yuko against Sidorela Dodaj of Kosovo in the first few seconds of combat, she put up a strong defence, fending off each of her opponent’s attacks to clinch the win as the clock ran out on the four minutes of regulation time.

“[Melody] scored early in the bronze medal final, and then she handled the rest of the bout very well, holding on to her lead until the very end. She has a lot to be proud of. She’s been progressing very well, and I hope she continues to do so,” said Canadian coach Alexandre Émond.

After winning her first-round match against Italy’s Alisia Bernabei in just 47 seconds, Grenier dispatched of Slovenia’s Nusa Samec to advance to the quarter-finals, where she lost to Aysun Mammadova of Azerbaijan. The Québécoise did not let the loss deter her. She moved on to the repechage, where she won two bouts in a row to claim her berth in one of the showdowns for bronze.

“The number of athletes in this competition is very high. She had to fight six bouts to win her medal. That’s very impressive. It wasn’t an easy day, but she adapted to each of her opponents. Even in her hardest matches, she found solutions. She will definitely grow from this experience,” added the coach.

Also in Poreč on Saturday, Amir Temirbaev (-60 kg) won his first match against Csanad Panczel of Hungary, before bowing out to Italy’s Domenico Celotto in the next round.

In the same weight category, Muhammad Turajev lost his first and only bout to Daviti Kaibulashvili of Georgia.

The action will continue on Sunday in Poreč, where Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg), Dilana Gesa (-57 kg), Maia Thomson (-63 kg), and Charlie Thibault (-70 kg) will represent Canada on the tatamis.
