Montréal, 28 août 2025 – Anes Mati a obtenu le meilleur résultat du jour parmi les athlètes canadiens présents aux Championnats du monde cadets, à Sofia, en Bulgarie, mercredi, en terminant cinquième chez les moins de 66 kg. S’il avait l’ambition de monter sur le podium, le Québécois a pu faire le plein d’expérience tout au long de la journée.
« Il a appris que tout est possible quand on y croit. Il a aussi compris qu’il était de niveau et qu’il pouvait bien réussir dans une compétition internationale », a affirmé son entraîneur Ewan Beaton.
Dans le duel pour la médaille de bronze en fin de journée, Mati était confronté au Kazakh Rolan Kairgali. L’adversaire du Canadien a été en mesure de marquer tôt dans l’affrontement et de remporter le combat.
« Il n’a pas été en mesure de mettre de la pression sur son adversaire, de trouver son rythme et d’être aussi agressif qu’il aurait dû être », a expliqué l’entraîneur.
En début de compétition, Mati a vaincu le Croate Roko Rozga, le Qatari Saleh Al-Saadi et Muhamadyosin Sulaimonov, du Tadjikistan. Il s’est ensuite incliné face au Kazakh Mukhammedali Zhylkaidar en quart de finale avant de l’emporter, au repêchage, face au Turque Numan Onay.
« Il a connu une excellente journée et il a été une belle surprise pour l’équipe canadienne ! » a lancé Beaton.
Également en action dans la même catégorie, Connor Gallant (-66 kg) a subi la défaite à son premier combat face au Bulgare Preslav Nikolov.
« C’était un très bon combat contre un adversaire très solide. Je pense qu’il avait la possibilité de l’emporter, mais malheureusement, il s’est fait immobiliser au sol en ne-waza en fin de combat », a expliqué Beaton.
Chez les moins de 60 kg, Amir Temirbaev a remporté son premier combat face à Roman Kuznetsov, de la Biélorussie. Temirbaev s’est ensuite incliné par yuko face à Mukhammadkarim Nosirov, de l’Ouzbékistan, au tour suivant.
« Il a été très bon aujourd’hui. Il a réussi à remporter son premier match en prolongation après avoir immobilisé son adversaire au sol. Dans le combat suivant, il a été le meilleur des deux athlètes dans la deuxième moitié, mais malheureusement, il avait déjà un retard au pointage et des pénalités », a résumé son entraîneur.
Du côté féminin, Melody Grenier (-52 kg) a obtenu un laissez-passer au premier tour avant d’être disqualifiée durant son combat face à la Géorgienne Salome Merkviladze.
« Elle était vraiment à la hauteur et elle a mené du début à la fin. Tout au long du combat, elle travaillait au sol et contrôlait son adversaire, mais à un moment, elle a tenté une attaque et malheureusement cette attaque est allée contre le coude de son adversaire, elle a donc été disqualifiée », a expliqué Beaton.
Dans la même catégorie que Grenier, Maegan Grooten a subi la défaite dès son premier combat face à l’Allemande Hannah Glauner.
Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg), Tristan Bourque (-81 kg), Myroslava Bondarenko (-57 kg), Maia Thomson (-63 kg) et Victoria Summers (-63 kg) seront les athlètes canadiens en action vendredi.

Anes Mati Fifth at Cadet World Championships
Montréal, August 28, 2025 – Anes Mati obtained Canada’s best result of the day at the Cadet World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Wednesday, finishing fifth in the under-66 kg weight division. And although the Québécois did not secure a coveted spot on the podium, he did gain a wealth of experience over the course of the day.
“He learned that when you believe in yourself, anything is possible. He also realized he’s got what it takes to compete at this level, and that he can do well in an international competition,” said his coach, Ewan Beaton.
In the late-afternoon bronze medal final, Mati faced Kazakhstan’s Rolan Kairgali, who scored early in the match and held on to his lead to secure the medal.
“[Anes] didn’t put enough pressure on his opponent. He couldn’t quite find his stride, so he didn’t fight as aggressively as he could have,” explained the coach.
Earlier in the competition, Mati defeated Roko Rozga of Croatia, Saleh Al-Saadi of Qatar, and Muhamadyosin Sulaimonov of Tajikistan. In the quarter-finals, he bowed out to Mukhammedali Zhylkaidar of Kazakhstan, but bounced back in the repechage with a win over Numan Onay of Turkey.
“He had a great day and was a wonderful surprise for the Canadian team!” said Beaton.
In the same weight category, Connor Gallant lost his first and only match to Preslav Nikolov of Bulgaria.
“He put up a good fight against a very solid opponent. I think he had a decent chance of winning, but unfortunately, he was pinned to the ground by ne-waza at the end of the bout,” explained Beaton.
In the under-60 kg division, Amir Temirbaev defeated Roman Kuznetsov of Belarus in his first match. However, in the next round, he lost by yuko to Mukhammadkarim Nosirov of Uzbekistan.
“[Amir] fought very well today. He won his first match in overtime by pinning his opponent to the ground. In the next round, he performed better than his opponent in the second half of the bout, but unfortunately, by then he was already too far behind in both points and penalties,” said his coach.
On the girls’ side, Melody Grenier (-52 kg) obtained a first-round bye, but was disqualified in her bout against Salome Merkviladze of Georgia.
“She was very much up to the task, and she dominated the match from start to finish. Throughout the entire bout, she kept it on the ground and remained in control of her opponent, but at one point, when she attacked, she unfortunately connected with her opponent’s elbow and was disqualified,” explained Beaton.
In the same weight category as Grenier, Maegan Grooten lost her first and only bout to Hannah Glauner of Germany.
Lowan Le Bris (-73 kg), Tristan Bourque (-81 kg), Myroslava Bondarenko (-57 kg), Maia Thomson (-63 kg), and Victoria Summers (-63 kg) will represent Canada on the tatamis on Friday.
