En finale pour l’or, Christa Deguchi s’incline contre la championne du monde

Montréal, 31 mars 2023 – Christa Deguchi a été médaillée d’argent au Grand Chelem d’Antalya, vendredi, en Turquie. Opposée en grande finale à la Brésilienne et championne du monde en titre Rafaela Silva, la Canadienne a livré une belle bataille, sauf que son adversaire a su marquer son waza-ari au bon moment pour sceller la victoire en finale féminine des moins de 57 kg.

« Christa connaissait une très bonne journée et je l’ai sentie à l’aise en finale contre une adversaire qui lui donne habituellement du fil à retordre », a analysé l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.

« Ça allait super bien, mais la Brésilienne l’a surprise avec une attaque qu’elle n’a pas vu venir à droite, alors qu’elle est gauchère. C’est tout à l’honneur de la Brésilienne et le timing était bon étant donné qu’il restait très peu de temps. »

Dans cet affrontement qui opposait les numéros 2 (Deguchi) et 3 (Silva) au classement mondial de la catégorie, les deux adversaires se sont longuement étudiées sans qu’une ne puisse prendre avantage sur l’autre. L’arbitre a d’ailleurs rappelé les deux finalistes à l’ordre après une minute de combat en raison de leur passivité.

Le jeu des prises a fini par donner des résultats et Silva a amené Deguchi au sol avec une minute et demie à faire, sans toutefois s’inscrire au tableau indicateur. L’Albertaine et championne du monde 2019 a ensuite partiellement contrôlé son adversaire au sol 30 secondes plus tard et la championne olympique des Jeux de Rio a obtenu un deuxième carton jaune.

Avec un peu plus de 10 secondes à faire au temps réglementaire, Silva a projeté Deguchi pour un waza-ari qui n’a ensuite pas eu assez de temps pour niveler la marque et forcer la prolongation.

En six affrontements sur la scène internationale contre cette combattante, la Canadienne s’est imposée quatre fois.

« Les deux filles se connaissent et se respectent beaucoup, alors on ne veut pas tomber dans le jeu de l’autre et on ne veut pas faire d’erreurs, a poursuivi l’entraîneur. Christa a quand même joué ça safe, mais somme toute, elle a fait un bon combat. C’est elle qui a fait les meilleures attaques et qui avait la meilleure posture pendant la majorité du combat. C’est juste dommage qu’elle se soit fait avoir comme ça à la fin, mais c’est de bon augure pour les Championnats du monde en mai. »

Afin d’obtenir son billet pour la ronde ultime, Deguchi s’était mesurée à une autre Brésilienne, Jessica Lima, qu’elle a vaincue par waza-ari en un peu moins de 3 minutes.

En début de journée, la future médaillée d’argent avait profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour. Elle avait ensuite eu raison de la Polonaise Julia Kowalczyk. Deguchi a poursuivi son élan en battant coup sur coup Altantsetseg Batsukh (Émirats arabes unis) et Cai Qi (Chine) pour accéder au carré d’as.

Dans le tableau des moins de 52 kg, la sœur de Christa, Kelly, a vu sa journée prendre fin au premier tour lorsqu’elle a été défaite par Gultaj Mammadaliyeva de l’Azerbaïdjan. Deguchi a tout de même offert une belle opposition à son adversaire qui a eu besoin de plus de trois minutes de prolongation pour l’emporter.

L’action reprendra samedi en Turquie. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) et Mohab ElNahas (-81 kg) seront les Canadiens qui combattront au jour 2 du tournoi.

Christa Deguchi Bows Out to World Champion in Gold Medal Final

Montréal, March 31, 2023 – Christa Deguchi won the silver medal at the Antalya Grand Slam in Turkey on Friday. The Canadian put up a good fight in the big final against reigning world champion Rafaela Silva of Brazil; however, her opponent scored a waza-ari at just the right moment to seal her victory in the women’s under-57 kg category.

“Christa had a very good day today, and I could tell she was feeling at ease in her final bout against a normally very tough competitor,” said coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

“It was going well, but the Brazilian, who is left-handed, caught her off guard with an unexpected attack from the right. Kudos to [Silva]. Her timing was perfect, since the clock had almost run out.” 

During the bout, Deguchi and Silva, who hold second and third place in the world rankings for their weight class, respectively, took some time to study each other, with neither gaining an advantage over the other. In fact, the referee called the two finalists to order a minute into the match due to their lack of combativity.

Their grappling game finally yielded results when Silva got Deguchi onto the ground with a minute and a half to go, although she did not manage to score. Thirty seconds later, the Albertan, who won the world championship in 2019, gained partial control of Silva on the ground, and Silva received a second yellow card.

With just over 10 seconds to go, Rio Olympic champion Silva threw Deguchi for a waza-ari, and the clock ran out before Deguchi could tie up the match and force it into overtime.

In her six international fights against Silva so far, Deguchi has won four.

“The two women know each other well and have a lot of respect for each other, so neither wants to get caught up in the other’s game or make any errors,” explained the coach. “Christa played it safe, but all in all, she fought well. Her attacks were better, as was her stance throughout most of the bout. It’s too bad she was caught out at the end, but still, it bodes well for the World Championships in May.” 

To secure her ticket to the gold medal fight, Deguchi defeated another Brazilian, Jessica Lima, by waza-ari in less than three minutes in the semi-final.

Deguchi had begun the day with a first-round bye. In her first fight of the day, she edged out Julia Kowalczyk of Poland. She then defeated Altantsetseg Batsukh of the United Arab Emirates and Cai Qi of China back-to-back to advance to the final four.

In the under-52 kg weight division, Christa’s sister Kelly Deguchi saw her day come to an end in the first round when she was defeated by Gultaj Mammadaliyeva of Azerbaijan. Kelly put up a good fight, however, and the match went three minutes into overtime before her opponent was able to get the better of her.

The action will resume on Saturday in Turkey. Canadians Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), Antoine Bouchard (-73 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) and Mohab ElNahas (-81 kg) will all hit the tatamis on Day Two of the tournament.
