Amanda McAlpine en argent aux mondiaux des vétérans

Montréal, 4 novembre 2023 – Amanda McAlpine s’est démarquée aux Championnats du monde des vétérans qui se sont déroulés cette semaine à Abou Dabi, aux Émirats arabes unis. Chez les plus de 78 kg, l’athlète de 45 ans est montée sur la deuxième marche du podium !

McAlpine, qui était en action dans un tournoi à la ronde, a remporté son premier duel de la journée face à la Lettone Sandra Barbaka.

L’enseignante de Guelph, en Ontario, a ensuite affronté l’Italienne Cristini Magini. Le combat a été âprement disputé entre les deux athlètes, Magini a toutefois réussi à prendre le dessus en l’emportant grâce à deux waza-aris.

Le troisième et dernier duel de McAlpine était le plus important de la journée alors qu’elle croisait le fer avec Bayarmaa Legden de la Mongolie avec la médaille d’argent à l’enjeu, les deux athlètes ayant une fiche d’une victoire et une défaite avant ce face-à-face.

L’intensité était à son maximum durant le combat si bien que les deux athlètes se sont retrouvées avec deux shidos à leur fiche un peu après les deux premières minutes. Legden a finalement reçu une troisième pénalité, mettant ainsi fin au combat et procurant la victoire à McAlpine.

Elle termine donc la compétition sur la deuxième marche du podium derrière l’Italienne Magini.

Ralph Ibanez a été l’autre grande vedette canadienne cette semaine aux Championnats du monde des vétérans. L’homme de 74 ans qui participait à la compétition chez les moins de 66 kg a extrêmement bien amorcé le tournoi avec une victoire contre l’Allemand Willy Huber. Ibanez a poursuivi sa lancée en battant ensuite le Japonais Sasaki Yashuhiro.

Les choses se sont toutefois compliquées par la suite pour le Canadien qui a subi sa première défaite face à Katagiri Kiyoshi, lui aussi du Japon. Ibanez a ensuite dû déclarer forfait pour son dernier duel de la journée qui devait l’opposer au Finlandais Tom Pahlman.

Sa fiche de deux victoires et deux défaites l’a finalement classé au quatrième rang de la catégorie. Après avoir subi la défaite face à Ibanez en début de journée, Willy Huber a remporté ses trois autres duels, en route vers la médaille d’or de la catégorie.

Danick Rocheleau (-100 kg) est l’autre Canadien qui a réussi à obtenir un classement aux mondiaux des vétérans cette année. L’athlète de 34 ans a remporté son premier combat de la journée face au Français Mathurin Ligot dans un affrontement âprement disputé qui s’est transporté en temps supplémentaire.

Rocheleau s’est ensuite frotté au Brésilien Milton Miranda en quart de finale. Malheureusement pour le Canadien, Miranda l’a emporté par ippon et a finalement poursuivi son chemin jusqu’à la plus haute marche du podium.

Au repêchage, Rocheleau a subi une deuxième défaite en s’inclinant devant l’Ouzbek Fakhriddin Sharipov. Le Québécois termine tout de même au septième rang de la compétition, lui qui avait terminé cinquième l’an dernier aux mondiaux des vétérans à Cracovie, en Pologne.

Chez les moins de 73 kg, Julien Pinel, 41 ans, a remporté son premier combat face à l’Indien Rajesh Kumar avant de subir la défaite au tour suivant en prolongation et aux pénalités face au Belge Arne Dewulf. Pinel s’est également incliné au repêchage contre le Kazakh Bakhruz Aliyez.

José Mechato a subi un sort similaire chez les moins de 66 kg. L’athlète de 45 ans l’a emporté d’entrée de jeu face à Batjargal Buriad de la Mongolie avant de s’incliner coup sur coup contre l’Italien Fabio Stefano Brocchieri, éventuel médaillé d’argent, et face au Français Ronny Hugon Jeannin, éventuel médaillé de bronze.

Également en action à Abou Dabi, Eric Velez a subi la défaite à son premier combat chez les moins de 90 kg devant le Français Alban Trocherie, futur médaillé de bronze. Le Canadien de 48 ans a été en mesure de se reprendre au repêchage avec une victoire face au Géorgien George Siradze. La route de Velez s’est toutefois terminée au tour suivant alors qu’il a été vaincu par l’Angollais Jose Semedo.

De son côté, Daniel Bird (65 ans) a subi deux défaites face à des éventuels médaillés lors de son séjour chez les moins de 90 kg aux Émirats arabes unis. Il s’est d’abord incliné en quart de finale contre le Français Alain Dayer qui a terminé sur la deuxième marche du podium, avant de baisser pavillon contre l’Italien Massimo Petrillo, futur médaillé de bronze.

Dernier Canadien en lice, Michael Morgenroth, 58 ans, a été défait à son seul combat chez les moins de 100 kg face au Sénégalais Mambaye Diaw, qui a terminé sa journée de travail avec une médaille de bronze autour du cou.

Judo Canada – Veterans World Championships

Amanda McAlpine Silver at Veterans World Championships

Montréal, November 4, 2023 – Amanda McAlpine shone this week at the Veterans World Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, taking second place in the over-78 kg category!

In the round robin, 45-year-old McAlpine defeated Sandra Barbaka of Latvia in her first bout of the day.

The teacher from Guelph, Ontario, then faced Cristini Magini of Italy. In the hotly contested match, Magini eventually gained the upper hand, winning the bout with two waza-ari.

McAlpine’s third and final fight was her most important of the day. With the silver medal at stake, she and her opponent Bayarmaa Legden of Mongolia entered the battle with tournament records of one win and one loss each.

The clash was so intense that the judokas found themselves with two shidos each after only two minutes. McAlpine ultimately clinched the victory when Legden received a third penalty, and finished the day on the second step of the podium, behind Magini.

Ralph Ibanez was Canada’s other star performer at the Veterans World Championships this week. In the under-66 kg weight division, the 74-year-old judoka got off to a strong start in the tournament with a win over Willy Huber of Germany. He then defeated Sasaki Yashuhiro of Japan.

Things took a tougher turn for the Canadian in the next round, however, when he lost to Katagiri Kiyoshi, also of Japan. Ibanez had to forfeit his final match of the day to Tom Pahlman of Finland.

He finished the day in fourth place, with two wins and two losses.

Germany’s Huber, who had lost to Ibanez early in the day, won his next three bouts and captured the gold medal.

Canada’s Danick Rocheleau (-100 kg) also ranked at this year’s Veterans World Championships. The 34-year-old won his first match of the day against France’s Mathurin Ligot in a fierce battle that went into overtime.

Next, Rocheleau was up against Milton Miranda of Brazil in the quarter-final. Unfortunately for the Canadian, Miranda won by ippon, and later went on to claim the top spot on the podium.

In the repechage, Rocheleau suffered a second loss, this time to Fakhriddin Sharipov of Uzbekistan. Nevertheless, the Québécois placed seventh in the competition. Last year, he finished fifth at the same event in Kraków, Poland.

In the under-73 kg category, 41-year-old Julien Pinel defeated Rajesh Kumar of India in his first fight of the day, before bowing out to Arne Dewulf of Belgium in overtime in the following round, due to penalties. Pinel then lost to Bakhruz Aliyez of Kazakhstan in the repechage.

José Mechato met a similar fate in the under-66 kg weight class. The 45-year-old won his opening bout against Batjargal Buriad of Mongolia, before losing back-to-back fights to Fabio Stefano Brocchieri of Italy and Ronny Hugon Jeannin of France, who later won silver and bronze, respectively.

In under-90 kg action in Abu Dhabi, Eric Velez lost his first bout of the day to Alban Trocherie of France, who later won a bronze medal. However, the 48-year-old Canadian bounced back in the repechage, with a win over George Siradze of Georgia. Unfortunately, Velez’s day came to an end in the next round, when he bowed out to Jose Semedo of Angola.

In the same weight category, 65-year-old Daniel Bird was defeated by two future medallists. First, he lost his quarter-final match to France’s Alain Dayer, who later won silver, before succumbing to Italy’s Massimo Petrillo, who later won bronze.

The final Canadian to compete in the United Arab Emirates was 58-year-old Michael Morgenroth, who lost his only fight of the day to Senegal’s Mambaye Diaw, who ultimately won bronze.
