Journée presque parfaite des Canadiennes en haut vol

Montréal, 26 juillet 2023 – Les Canadiennes ont fait un tir groupé en plongeon de haut vol, mercredi, aux Championnats du monde des sports aquatiques ! Elles ont amassé les médailles d’argent et de bronze au 20 m, en plus d’occuper la quatrième place du classement final.

Molly Carlson (322,80) est montée sur la deuxième marche du podium et a ainsi devancé sa compatriote Jessica Macauley (320,95). Simone Leathead (312,40) a suivi derrière, au quatrième rang, à cette épreuve où l’Australienne Rhiannan Iffland a été sacrée championne du monde pour une troisième année de suite avec ses 357,40 points.

Carlson était encore sous le choc des résultats obtenus par les Canadiennes mercredi.

« Quelle journée excitante pour l’équipe canadienne de se classer deuxième, troisième et quatrième à nos premiers Championnats du monde ! C’est incroyable et ça démontre à quel point notre fédération nous soutient en construisant des plateformes et en nous aidant à ce que nous puissions nous entraîner un peu partout. C’était un rêve d’être debout sur le podium avec une de mes meilleures amies (Jessica Macauley)! » a lancé la native de Thunder Bay à sa sortie du podium.

La nouvelle vice-championne du monde croit qu’elle aurait pu mieux exécuter son quatrième et dernier plongeon, qui lui a valu 92,40 points. Conclure avec une médaille d’argent laisse néanmoins présager de belles choses selon elle.

« Avoir un plongeon du degré de difficulté plus élevé m’a vraiment aidée. Je pense que dans l’avenir, tout le monde va monter de niveau. »

Une retraite bien méritée

La compétition de Fukuoka avait un cachet particulier pour Jessica Macauley, car elle prendra sa retraite sportive à la fin de la présente saison. L’athlète de 30 ans voulait bien gérer ses émotions alors qu’elle était provisoirement au quatrième rang avant d’entamer la ronde finale.

« Je n’avais pas d’attentes en arrivant ici et je n’aime pas me mettre de pression pour obtenir un classement. Je voulais juste bien réussir mes plongeons. De les réussir et de monter sur le podium à ma dernière année, c’est une incroyable façon de partir à la retraite ! » a souligné Macauley qui promet aller célébrer les prestations de son équipe dans une soirée karaoké.

L’entraîneur Stéphane Lapointe a dressé un bilan positif de la compétition féminine.

« Je suis vraiment content ! Le but était que les filles soient dans le coup dès le jour un et elles ont continué. Nous avons montré que nous sommes une nation forte et c’est vraiment impressionnant. […] Notre programme s’est bien développé dans les trois dernières années et on continue de regarder vers l’avant. »

Jeudi, Michael Foisy sera en action à la plateforme de 27 m. Le Canadien est provisoirement 19^e après les deux premières rondes du concours qui se terminera cette même journée.

Nearly Perfect Day for Canadian High Divers

Montréal, July 26, 2023 – Canada’s female divers turned in a fine performance on Wednesday at the World Aquatics Championships! In the 20-metre event, they captured the silver and bronze medals, as well as claiming the fourth spot in the rankings.

Molly Carlson (322.80) finished second, just ahead of her teammate Jessica Macauley (320.95). Simone Leathead (312.40) was right behind them, in fourth place. Australia’s Rhiannan Iffland earned the title of world champion for the third year in a row, with 357.40 points.

Carlson was still buzzing about the Canadian women’s results on Wednesday.

“What an exciting day for Canada, finishing second, third and fourth at our first World Championships! It’s incredible, and it shows how supportive our federation has been, building platforms and making sure we have a lot of places to train. It was a dream come true to stand on the podium with one of my best friends [Jessica Macauley]!” stated the diver from Thunder Bay, as she stepped down from the podium.

The newly minted silver medallist feels she could have done better on her fourth and final dive, which earned her a score of 92.40 points. Nevertheless, she believes her silver medal bodes well for the future.

“Having a dive with a higher degree of difficulty really helped. I think that in the future, everyone will take it up a notch.” 

A well-deserved retirement

The competition in Fukuoka was particularly poignant for Macauley, who will retire from diving at the end of the season. The 30-year-old was determined to keep her emotions in check when she found herself in provisional fourth place going into the final round.

“I had no expectations coming here, and I don’t like to put pressure on myself to obtain a particular ranking. I just wanted to dive well. So to have done well and finished on the podium in my final year is an incredible way to retire!” said Macauley, who plans to celebrate the team’s achievements with a karaoke night.

Coach Stéphane Lapointe had nothing but positive things to say about the women’s competition.

“I’m really happy! Our goal was to make sure the girls were in the running from day one, and they just kept it up. We showed that our country is a strong contender, and that’s really impressive. […] There’s been a lot of development in our program over the past three years, and we’re looking ahead toward the future.”

On Thursday, Michael Foisy will be in action on the 27-metre platform. Following the two first rounds, the Canadian holds provisional 19th place. The finals will take place on the same day.
