Montréal, 10 mai 2026 – Coralie Godbout était la seule représentante de l’unifolié en action dimanche, au Grand Chelem d’Astana, au Kazakhstan. Chez les moins de 78 kg, la Québécoise a atteint un combat pour la médaille de bronze où elle s’est malheureusement inclinée après avoir dominé les premières minutes de l’affrontement.
Elle conclut la compétition au cinquième rang de sa catégorie, le meilleur classement de sa carrière en Grand Chelem.
Opposée à la Brésilienne Beatriz Freitas en finale de bronze, Godbout semblait en contrôle de l’action dès le début du combat. Elle a toutefois été surprise par une projection de son adversaire, ce qui a été suffisant pour mettre fin au duel.
Lors du seul autre affrontement entre Godbout et Freitas, la Canadienne de 24 ans s’était imposée en temps supplémentaire aux Championnats panaméricains, en avril 2025.
« À mon avis, Coralie était bien en avance dans le combat, mais il y a eu une petite erreur d’inattention lors d’une séquence de reprise, ce qui a permis à son adversaire de mettre fin aux hostilités. Il y a du positif qui ressort de cette journée pour Coralie, même si je suis convaincue qu’elle avait largement sa place sur le podium aujourd’hui », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.
En début de journée, Godbout avait donné le ton en venant à bout de Khuslen Otgonbayar, de la Mongolie, et d’Ekaterina Tokareva, du Kazakhstan, afin d’atteindre les demi-finales. Elle s’y est toutefois incliné contre l’Allemande Anna Monta Olek, éventuelle médaillée d’or du jour.
« Coralie a super bien commencé la journée et elle était en grande forme. Elle a réussi une belle projection à son premier combat alors que son adversaire menait déjà. Ce n’est jamais facile de revenir de l’arrière comme ça. Elle a dominé son deuxième combat, mais en demi-finale, la commande était de taille face à l’Allemande, qui est une excellente athlète », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.
Les judokas canadiens présents à Astana demeureront au Kazakhstan au cours des prochains jours pour un camp préparatoire, à l’exception de Lowan Le Bris, qui reviendra au Canada afin de participer aux Championnats canadiens ouverts qui s’amorcent jeudi, à Calgary.

Coralie Godbout at the Foot of the Podium in Astana
Montréal, May 10, 2026 – Coralie Godbout was the only Canadian in action on Sunday at the Grand Slam in Astana, Kazakhstan. In the under-78 kg category, the Québécoise battled all the way to a bronze medal final, where she suffered a narrow defeat after dominating the early minutes of the bout.
She thus ended the day in fifth place, the highest Grand Slam result of her career so far.
Facing Brazil’s Beatriz Freitas in the clash for bronze, 24-year-old Godbout took control of the action from the outset. However, a surprise throw by her adversary put an end to the match.
The only other time the two judokas squared off, at the Pan-American Championships in April 2025, Godbout won in overtime.
“In my opinion, Coralie was well ahead, but a slight lapse in concentration on her part during a takedown sequence allowed her opponent to end the match. Still, she can draw some positives from today, even though I believe she fully deserved a spot on the podium,” said Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Godbout set the tone early today, defeating Khuslen Otgonbayar of Mongolia and Ekaterina Tokareva of Kazakhstan to advance to the semi-finals. In that round, however, she lost to Anna Monta Olek of Germany, who later snagged the gold medal.
“Coralie had a great start to the day, and she was in fine form. In her first bout, she made an excellent throw, despite the fact that her opponent was in the lead. It’s never easy to come from behind like that. She then completely dominated her second bout, but in the semi-finals, she faced a tough challenge in the German, who is an excellent athlete,” added Valois-Fortier.
The Canadian judokas currently in Astana will remain in Kazakhstan for the next few days for a training camp, with the exception of Lowan Le Bris, who will return to Canada to compete in the Canadian Open Championships, which begin on Thursday in Calgary.
