Judo Canada – Open africain et européen
Montréal, 11 février 2024 –Coralie Godbout se souviendra longtemps de son passage à l’Open africain de Tunis, où elle a triomphé chez les moins de 78 kg, dimanche, en clôture de l’événement. Une prestation en or qui prouve qu’elle est dans la bonne voie pour la suite de sa carrière internationale.
Deux victoires par ippon obtenues en ronde préliminaire contre la Burundaise Ange Ciella Niragira et l’Algérienne Louiza Ichallal ont propulsé Godbout en grande finale, où elle avait rendez-vous avec la judoka locale Arij Akkab.
Déterminée à boucler sa journée sur la plus haute marche du podium, la Québécoise de 22 ans n’a pas mis de temps à montrer ses couleurs. Elle s’est assurée de bien maîtriser sa prise avant d’amener son adversaire au sol. Godbout y est ensuite allée d’une transition pour immobiliser Akkab, impuissante devant la manœuvre.
La Canadienne a finalement concrétisé sa victoire par ippon après 20 secondes d’immobilisation pour conclure la journée avec l’or au cou.
« J’ai vraiment tenu de toutes mes forces pour maintenir ma prise ! C’était mon plan de match dès le départ de l’amener au sol. Je voulais exploiter cette facette qui est une force pour moi et qui semblait être l’une de ses faiblesses. Ç’a bien été et je suis fière de ma performance », a résumé Godbout quelques minutes après sa sortie du podium.
Grâce à ce triomphe, la judoka de l’unifolié compte maintenant sept médailles en Open continental senior, dont trois en or. Une récompense à la hauteur de ses attentes et qui lui démontre que les changements apportés dans sa préparation lors de la dernière année portent fruit.
« Avant, je me mettais beaucoup de pression pour accumuler des points pour les classements mondiaux, mais là, j’y vais juste un combat à la fois. Je suis contente de la manière dont j’ai travaillé tout au long de la semaine. J’étais concentrée sur l’objectif et j’ai bien suivi mon plan de match », a-t-elle analysé.
Godbout voudra maintenant bâtir sur cette nouvelle victoire et elle aura la chance de répéter l’exploit dès le week-end prochain, à Alger, où elle sera d’un autre Open africain.
« Ce sera assez similaire comme compétition, mais je ne tiens rien pour acquis. Même si je rencontre des adversaires que j’ai battues cette fin de semaine, je ne dois rien prendre à la légère, parce que chaque combat est différent, peu importe ce qu’on a fait dans le passé », a-t-elle conclu.
Les Canadiens stoppés d’entrée de jeu à Györ
Au même moment, mais du côté de la Hongrie, les trois judokas du Canada inscrits à l’Open européen de Györ n’ont pu trouver le chemin de la victoire.
En lice chez les moins de 70 kg, Laurence Biron a dû s’avouer vaincue par ippon contre la Libanaise Aqulina Chayeb au terme d’un long duel qui a nécessité près de deux minutes de prolongation.
Pour leur part, David Popovici et Keagan Young étaient du tournoi des moins de 81 kg.
Après avoir bénéficié d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, les deux athlètes ont subi des revers par ippon, le premier contre le Slovène Nace Herkovic et le second face au Tchèque Jan Svoboda.
En plus de l’Open africain d’Alger, il y aura de l’action au Grand Chelem de Bakou, en Azerbaïdjan, le week-end prochain. Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg), Christa Deguchi (-57 kg), Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Julien Frascadore (-66 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg), Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg), Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) et Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) représenteront le Canada lors de cette compétition.

Coralie Godbout Champion in Tunis!
Montréal, February 11, 2024 – Coralie Godbout will no doubt fondly remember her trip to the African Open in Tunis, where she triumphed in the under-78 kg weight category on Sunday, the final day of the event. Her brilliant performance proved she is on the right track for the next stage of her international career.
Two preliminary round wins by ippon over Ange Ciella Niragira of Burundi and Louiza Ichallal of Algeria propelled Godbout into the big final, where she faced off against local judoka Arij Akkab.
The 22-year-old Québécoise, who was determined to end the day of top of the podium, wasted no time in showcasing her talents. She ensured she had full control of her grip before pulling Akkab to the ground, where she transitioned to a hold that completely immobilized her opponent.
Godbout held Akkab down for a full 20 seconds, at which point she was declared the winner by ippon. She ended the day with the gold medal around her neck.
“I used all my strength to maintain my hold! From the start, my plan was to get her onto the ground. I wanted to take advantage of the fact that it’s one of my strengths and seems to be one of her weak spots. It went well, and I’m proud of my performance,” said Godbout, moments after descending from the podium.
Today’s medal brings the Canadian judoka’s Senior Open Continental total to seven, including three gold. The achievement reflects her high expectations and demonstrates that the changes she made to her training and preparation regimens over the past year are paying off.
“Before, I put a lot of pressure on myself to accumulate points for the international rankings. Now, I just focus on one fight at a time. I’m proud of the work I did this week. I stayed focused on my goal, and I stuck to my game plan,” she explained.
Godbout now hopes to build upon her latest victory, and she will have the chance to do so next weekend in Algiers, where she will compete in another African Open.
“The competition will be pretty similar, but I won’t take anything for granted. Even if I fight opponents that I beat this weekend, I can’t take things lightly, because each bout is different, regardless of what may have happened in the past,” she concluded.
Canadians halted in first round in Győr
Meanwhile, in Hungary, three Canadian judokas faced early elimination at the European Open in Győr.
In the under-70 kg division, Laurence Biron lost by ippon to Aqulina Chayeb of Lebanon following a lengthy match that went almost two minutes into overtime.
David Popovici and Keagan Young both competed in the under-81 kg category. After receiving first-round byes, the two athletes were defeated by ippon by Nace Herkovic of Slovenia and Jan Svoboda of the Czech Republic, respectively.
In addition to the African Open in Algiers, next weekend will also see judo action at the Baku Grand Slam in Azerbaijan. Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg), Christa Deguchi (-57 kg), Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg), Julien Frascadore (-66 kg), Arthur Margelidon (-73 kg), François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg), Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg), Kyle Reyes (-100 kg), and Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) will represent Canada at the competition.
