Montréal, 11 septembre 2023 – Les judokas canadiens seniors voudront imiter leurs compatriotes cadets et juniors qui ont fait le plein de médailles en ouverture des Championnats panaméricains et de l’Océanie, à Calgary. Ce sont 18 athlètes seniors qui représenteront le Canada dès vendredi, au Complexe WinSport, et qui tenteront de devenir des champions panaméricains dans leur catégorie respective.

Au total, ce sont 21 médailles, dont 7 d’or, qui ont été remportées par les Canadiens lors du premier week-end de compétition à Calgary. Leanna Au et Yehor Paladii ont triomphé chez les cadets, tandis que Charlize-Isabelle Medillo, Evelyn Beaton, Laurence Biron, Jumber Meladze et John Jr Messe A Bessong ont fait de même chez les juniors.

Beaton et Biron tenteront d’ailleurs de répéter leur exploit dès vendredi, elles qui seront également en action chez les seniors.

« Nos Canadiens sont prêts et nous espérons que de nombreux spectateurs viendront les encourager à la maison. Le comité organisateur a fait un travail remarquable et le site est à couper le souffle. Tout est en place pour cette qualification olympique historique », mentionne Nicolas Gill, directeur général et directeur haute performance de Judo Canada.

Les 18 athlètes seniors seront dirigés par les entraîneurs Janusz Pawlowski, Antoine Valois-Fortier et Sasha Mehmedovic au cours de cette importante étape de qualification pour les Jeux olympiques de Paris, prévus en juillet 2024.

La délégation sera menée par la médaillée olympique Jessica Klimkait, les Olympiens Arthur Margelidon, Antoine Bouchard, Kyle Reyes et Shady ElNahas ainsi que la championne du monde en titre chez les moins de 57 kg, Christa Deguchi.

Highly Anticipated Championships for Canadian Seniors

Montréal, September 11, 2023 – This weekend, Canada’s senior judokas will strive to emulate their cadet and junior counterparts, who captured a host of medals on the opening weekend of the PanAmerican-Oceania Championships in Calgary. Starting Friday at the WinSport Complex, Canada will be represented by eighteen senior-level athletes aiming to clinch the titles in their respective categories.

On the first weekend of competition, Canada earned a total of 21 medals, including seven gold. Leanna Au and Yehor Paladii claimed the titles at the cadet level, while Charlize-Isabelle Medillo, Evelyn Beaton, Laurence Biron, Jumber Meladze and John Jr Messe A Bessong did the same in the junior category.

Beaton and Biron will attempt to repeat the feat on Friday, as they will also be competing at the senior level.

“Our Canadians are ready, and we hope to see many spectators cheering them on, here on home turf! The organizing committee did a remarkable job, and the site looks fantastic. Everything is in place to make it a historic Olympic qualification event,” said Nicolas Gill, CEO and High Performance Director of Judo Canada.

During the tournament, which is an important qualification event for the Paris Olympic Games in July 2024, the eighteen senior athletes will be coached by Janusz Pawlowski, Antoine Valois-Fortier and Sasha Mehmedovic.

The Canadian delegation will be led by Olympic medallist Jessica Klimkait, Olympians Arthur Margelidon, Antoine Bouchard, Kyle Reyes and Shady ElNahas, and reigning under-57 kg world champion Christa Deguchi.
