Judo Canada – Grand Chelem
Montréal, 17 février 2024 – Après la médaille d’or remportée par Christa Deguchi (57 kg) la veille, les judokas canadiens sont retournés sur le podium samedi au Grand Chelem de Bakou, en Azerbaïdjan. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard est venue bien près d’imiter Deguchi, terminant finalement avec la médaille d’argent chez les moins de 63 kg alors qu’Arthur Margelidon est monté sur la troisième marche du podium dans la catégorie des moins de 73 kg.
C’est au terme d’un duel marathon en grande finale face à l’Autrichienne Lubjana Piovesana que Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard a dû s’avouer vaincue, elle qui avait été la principale animatrice de cet affrontement. La Canadienne a multiplié les attaques dès les premiers instants du combat, sans toutefois être en mesure de concrétiser.
Piovesana a finalement été en mesure de l’emporter grâce à un ippon après plus de 4 minutes de prolongation.
« Ç’a été très serré en finale, le combat a été très long. Catherine voulait donner le ton dès le départ en attaquant rapidement. Il y a peut-être eu un bon d’impatience en fin de combat, mais c’est toujours plus facile à dire une fois que c’est terminé. C’est encourageant comme résultat à ce moment-ci de la saison », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Profitant d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, Beauchemin-Pinard a amorcé sa journée avec une victoire convaincante face à Sevinch Isokova, de l’Ouzbékistan. La Québécoise a ensuite eu besoin du temps supplémentaire pour venir à bout de l’Autrichienne Magdalena Krssakova au tour suivant.
Celle qui est actuellement au premier rang de la catégorie au classement mondial a ensuite assuré sa place en finale grâce à des victoires devant la Néerlandaise Geke Van Den Berg, ainsi que face à la Hongroise Szofi Ozbas.
« Ç’a été une superbe compétition pour Catherine. Elle a connu un bon début de journée en marquant des points autant debout qu’au sol. Elle était déçue de sa performance au Grand Chelem de Paris il y a deux semaines et c’est bien de la voir rebondir de cette façon », a ajouté Valois-Fortier.
Un premier podium en Grand Chelem depuis 2022
De son côté, Arthur Margelidon a réussi à mettre fin à une disette de plus de 15 mois sans podium en Grand Chelem lorsqu’il s’est imposé en finale de bronze face Rashid Mammadaliyev de l’Ouzbékistan. Margelidon a marqué un waza-ari avec quelques secondes seulement à faire au temps réglementaire pour assurer sa victoire.
Sa dernière médaille en Grand Chelem remontait à novembre 2022, aussi à Bakou.
Le Québécois a eu raison du Sud-Coréen Heoncheol Kang et de l’Azéri Ibrahim Aliyev lors de ses deux premiers duels. Il s’est par la suite incliné face à Abubakr Sherov, du Tadjikistan en quart de finale. Margelidon a toutefois été en mesure de se reprendre de belle façon au repêchage où il a vaincu le Français Joan-Benjamin Gaba afin de se qualifier pour l’un des duels pour une médaille de bronze.
« Pour Arthur, finir la journée avec quatre victoires et une défaite, c’est excellent. Ç’a été un combat très serré en quart de finale et il a bien utilisé toutes ses habiletés et ses forces pour remporter des combats importants. C’est le fun de le voir remonter sur le podium », a mentionné le pilote canadien.
Quant à lui, François Gauthier-Drapeau (-81 kg) a été limité à un seul combat samedi, à Bakou, s’inclinant face au Géorgien Zaur Dvalashvili.
Le Grand Chelem de Bakou se conclura dimanche. Louis Krieber-Gagnon (-90 kg), Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) et Shady ElNahas (-100 kg) seront les trois Canadiens en action.
Justin Karn, septième en Allemagne
Un représentant du Canada était de la partie samedi au Grand Prix de parajudo à Heidelberg, en Allemagne. Justin Karn (J2 -60 kg), originaire de Guelph, en Ontario, mais résidant maintenant à Montréal, a pris le septième rang de la compétition.
Karn, s’alignant dans la catégorie des athlètes malvoyants, a remporté son premier duel de la journée face au Français Anatole Rubin, avant de s’incliner au tour suivant contre le Sud-Coréen Min-Jae Lee, dans un duel qui a nécessité la prolongation.
Le Canadien de 42 ans ne s’est pas laissé abattre par cette défaite, revenant en force avec une victoire par ippon face à l’Israélien Roi Haim Armani. Sa journée de travail a ensuite pris fin lorsqu’il a été vaincu par l’Ouzbek Sherzod Namozov.
Priscilla Gagné (J1 -57 kg), Christina Mowatt (J1 -57 kg) et Eitel Houedakor (J1 -90 kg) participeront au Grand Prix d’Heidelberg, dimanche.

Two More Medals for Canada in Baku
Montréal, February 17, 2024 – One day after Christa Deguchi won a gold medal in the under-57 kg weight division at the Baku Grand Slam in Azerbaijan, two more Canadian judokas climbed onto the podium on Saturday. Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard came close to repeating Deguchi’s feat, finishing with the silver medal in the under-63 kg category, while Arthur Margelidon secured a bronze medal in the under-73 kg group.
In the very lengthy under-63 kg big final, Beauchemin-Pinard led the action from the very beginning of the match, but ultimately bowed out to her opponent Lubjana Piovesana of Austria. Although the Canadian made numerous attacks right out of the gate, she was unable to clinch the win.
In the end, Piovesana scored an ippon after more than four minutes of overtime.
“It was a very close final, and a long match. Catherine wanted to set the tone right off the bat by attacking quickly. She may have been a little impatient at the end, but that’s easy to say once the bout is over. It’s an encouraging result at this point in the season,” said Canadian coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.
Beauchemin-Pinard, who had obtained a first-round bye, began her day with a sound victory over Sevinch Isokova of Uzbekistan. In the next round, however, she needed a little extra time to defeat Magdalena Krssakova of Austria.
The Québécoise, who currently sits at the top of the international rankings in her weight category, then secured her spot in the big final with two consecutive wins against Geke Van Den Berg of the Netherlands and Szofi Ozbas of Hungary.
« It was an excellent competition for Catherine. The beginning of the day went really well for her, and she scored points both on her feet and on the ground. She was disappointed in her performance at the Paris Grand Slam two weeks ago, so it’s great to see her come back like this,” added Valois-Fortier.
First Grand Slam podium finish since 2022
Meanwhile, Arthur Margelidon ended a 15-month Grand Slam medal drought when he defeated Rashid Mammadaliyev of Uzbekistan in today’s bronze medal final. With just a few seconds remaining in regulation time, he scored a waza-ari to secure the win.
Margelidon last won a Grand Slam medal in 2022, also in Baku.
In his first two bouts today, the Québécois edged out Heoncheol Kang of South Korea and Ibrahim Aliyev of Azerbaijan. He then lost to Abubakr Sherov of Tajikistan in the quarter-final. However, he bounced back in the repechage, besting Joan-Benjamin Gaba of France to qualify for one of the bronze medal finals.
“For Arthur, ending the day with four wins and one loss is really great. His quarter-final match was very tight, and he made good use of his skills and strengths to win some important fights. It’s great to see him back on the podium,” said Valois-Fortier.

Justin Karn seventh in Germany
Canada was represented by one athlete on Saturday at the Para Judo Grand Prix in Heidelberg, Germany. Justin Karn (J2 -60 kg), who is originally from Guelph, Ontario, but who now lives in Montréal, finished the competition in seventh place.
Karn, who competes in the visually impaired category, won his first bout of the day against Anatole Rubin of France, before losing to Min-Jae Lee of South Korea in the next round, in a match that went into overtime.
The 42-year-old Canadian did not let the defeat get him down, however, and he roared back with a win by ippon over Roi Haim Armani of Israel. His day of competition came to an end when he was defeated by Sherzod Namozov of Uzbekistan.
Priscilla Gagné (J1 -57 kg), Christina Mowatt (J1 -57 kg), and Eitel Houedakor (J1 -90 kg) will compete in the Heidelberg Grand Prix on Sunday.
