Montréal, 3 mars 2024 – Pas moins de quatre judokas canadiens ont pris part à un combat de médaille au dernier jour de la Coupe européenne de Sarajevo et deux d’entre eux sont montés sur le podium. Dimanche, Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) et John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) ont tous les deux été décorés d’une médaille de bronze.

Après avoir profité d’un laissez-passer au premier tour, Beaton a amorcé sa quête de podium avec une victoire contre la Croate Matea Svecjnak, avant de poursuivre sa lancée en quart de finale en ayant raison de la Serbe Ana Cobanovic.

Malheureusement pour l’Albertaine, elle a été vaincue en demi-finale face à l’éventuelle médaillée d’argent de la compétition, la Turque Seyma Yildrim.

Beaton a toutefois pu terminer la compétition en beauté avec une victoire convaincante dans un duel pour l’obtention de la médaille de bronze face à Pinar Boga, elle aussi de la Turquie.

« Evelyn a fait un excellent travail ! Elle a poussé son adversaire à la limite dans son duel de demi-finale, mais elle s’est fait prendre par ippon lors de la prolongation. Ç’a été une question de secondes à ce moment-là. Elle a été dominante dans son dernier combat pour la médaille de bronze », a commenté l’entraîneur canadien Sasha Mehmedovic.

Également en action du côté féminin, Heidi Quach a terminé cinquième chez les moins de 48 kg. La Québécoise a remporté son premier duel de la journée avant de prendre la route du repêchage avec une défaite au deuxième tour.

Quach n’a pas baissé les bras et a remporté ses deux combats suivants contre la Polonaise Oliwia Kozuch et face à la Bulgare Sofia Rangelova. Quach s’est toutefois avouée vaincue dans le duel pour la médaille de bronze face à l’Italienne Elena Guarducci.

Dans la même catégorie, Marie-Lune Turmel a été limitée à un seul combat.

Du côté masculin, John Jr Messé A Bessong n’a probablement pas connu le début de journée qu’il aurait souhaité alors qu’il a été surpris d’entrée de jeu par le Serbe Mateja Borojevic.

Messé A Bessong a toutefois été en mesure de se reprendre au repêchage où il a d’abord vaincu le Chypriote Andreas Yiapanis avant d’avoir raison de Stefan Kovinic, du Monténégro. Le Québécois a mis un point d’exclamation sur sa journée avec une victoire contre le Turque Tunahan Tutar dans la finale de bronze.

« John a perdu rapidement en début de journée, mais il a été dominant par la suite. Il aurait probablement pu remporter les grands honneurs s’il ne s’était pas fait prendre lors de son premier combat », a indiqué Mehmedovic.

Chez les moins de 81 kg, Tigran Kryvytskyi a bien failli porter le total de médailles du Canada à trois lors de cette dernière journée de compétition à Sarajevo, mais il s’est finalement incliné dans son duel pour la médaille de bronze face au Serbe Boris Rutovic.

Plus tôt, Kryvytskyi avait vaincu coup sur coup le Bosniaque Ivan Cuzulan, le Turque Erman Gurgen ainsi que le Bulgare Hristo Valkov afin d’obtenir son billet pour les demi-finales où il a baissé pavillon contre le Serbe Mihajlo Simin.

Faniry Michael Andriamanana et Yehor Paladii, tous deux inscrits dans le tableau des moins de 90 kg ont respectivement obtenu des fiches de 0-1 et 0-2 et ils n’ont pas obtenu de classement.

Samedi, Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg) et Lasha Tsatsalashvili (-73 kg) étaient tous les deux montés sur la troisième marche du podium.

Une autre Coupe européenne junior sera au programme la semaine prochaine du côté de Podgorica, au Monténégro.

Two more podium finishes for Canada in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Montreal, March 3^rd, 2024 – No fewer than four Canadian judokas competed for medals on the final day of the European Cup in Sarajevo, and two of them climbed on the podium. On Sunday, Evelyn Beaton (-52 kg) and John Jr Messé A Bessong (+100 kg) both earned bronze medals.

After receiving a first-round bye, Beaton began her quest for the podium with a victory over Croatia’s Matea Svecjnak, before carrying her momentum in the quarter-finals and beating Serbia’s Ana Cobanovic.

Unfortunately for the Albertan, she was defeated in the semis by the eventual silver medallist, Seyma Yildrim of Turkey.

However, Beaton was able to end the competition on a high note with a convincing triumph in her bronze medal tussle against Turkey’s Pinar Boga.

“Evelyn did an excellent job! She pushed her opponent to the limit in her semi-final duel, but was caught by ippon in overtime. It was a matter of seconds at that point. She was dominant in her last fight for the bronze medal”, stated Canadian coach Sasha Mehmedovic.

Also in action on the women’s side, Heidi Quach finished fifth in the under-48 kg weight category. The Quebecer won her first match of the day before heading to the repechage with a second-round loss.

Quach didn’t give up, winning her next two contests against Poland’s Oliwia Kozuch and Bulgaria’s Sofia Rangelova, but she eventually succumbed to Italy’s Elena Guarducci in the bronze medal match.

In the same category, Marie-Lune Turmel was limited to a single bout.

On the men’s side, John Jr Messé A Bessong probably didn’t get off to the start he would have liked as he was caught off guard early by Serbian Mateja Borojevic.

Messé A Bessong was able to bounce back in the repechage, however, where he first defeated Andreas Yiapanis of Cyprus before getting the better of Stefan Kovinic of Montenegro. The Quebecer put an exclamation point on his day with a victory over Tunahan Tutar of Turkey in the bronze final.

“John lost quickly to begin the day, but was dominant afterwards. He probably could have claimed top honours if he hadn’t been caught by surprise in his first fight,” said Mehmedovic.

In the under-81 kg category, Tigran Kryvytskyi almost increased Canada’s medal tally to three on the final day of competition in Sarajevo, but he ultimately fell to Serbia’s Boris Rutovic in his bronze medal duel.

Earlier, Kryvytskyi obtained consecutive victories over Bosnian Ivan Cuzulan, Turkey’s Erman Gurgen and Bulgaria’s Hristo Valkov to book his spot in the semi-finals, where he lost to Serbia’s Mihajlo Simin.

Faniry Michael Andriamanana and Yehor Paladii, who both competed in the under-90 kg weight class, obtained records of 0-1 and 0-2 respectively and were not ranked.

On Saturday, Daniil Kremerman (-66 kg) and Lasha Tsatsalashvili (-73 kg) both climbed to the third step of the podium.

The next European Junior Cup is scheduled for next week in Podgorica, Montenegro.
