Montréal, 25 juillet 2021 – Ecaterina Guica (52 kg) a perdu son combat en 16e de finale sur le mythique tatami du Nippon Budokan face à la Belge Charline Van Snick. Cette dernière a marqué une première fois grâce à un wazi-ari avant de mettre fin à l’affrontement par Ippon avec un peu plus d’une minute à faire.
« Le combat ne s’est pas très bien passé. J’aurais voulu faire mieux et éviter de me faire prendre au sol. C’est quand même décevant, mais je voulais approcher le combat de la meilleure manière possible », a déclaré Guica, déçue de la tournure des événements.
Van Snick, médaillée d’argent aux Jeux olympiques de Londres, a affirmé à son entraîneur qu’elle était complètement vidée après son combat face à Guica. La Québécoise a d’ailleurs ressenti cette fatigue chez son adversaire au cours de l’affrontement, mais n’a pas réussi à en profiter.
« Je me sentais bien, mais je voyais qu’elle perdait de l’énergie. C’est décevant parce que physiquement, j’étais plus en forme qu’elle après l’affrontement. Je savais que c’était un gros combat mais je croyais vraiment en mes chances. »
La judoka de La Prairie a été opérée à une main après une blessure subie en mars. Elle a toutefois réussi à récupérer à temps pour les Championnats mondiaux de juin et pour le tournoi olympique
Guica participait à ses deuxièmes Jeux olympiques, elle qui avait terminé neuvième à Rio en 2016. L’athlète de 27 ans a évidemment remarqué de nombreuses différences entre ses deux expériences olympiques.
« On a principalement fait des entraînements à la maison en préparation pour Tokyo. J’ai quand même eu la chance de travailler sur mes lacunes. Il y avait tout de même une bonne ambiance sur place, ça fait du bien d’entendre des encouragements pendant les combats. »
Lundi, Jessica Klimkait (57 kg) et Arthur Margelidon (73 kg) seront tous les deux en actions. La championne mondiale en titre possède un laissez-passer qui l’amène directement en huitième de finale. Quant à Margelidon, il sera opposé au Saoudien Sulaiman Hamad en seizième de finale.

Ecaterina Guica Beaten in First Bout
Montréal, July 25, 2021 – In the elimination round of 32, Ecaterina Guica (52 kg) bowed out to Belgium’s Charline Van Snick on the legendary tatamis of the Nippon Budokan. Van Snick first scored a wazi-ari before ending the clash by ippon with just over a minute to go.
“The fight didn’t go very well. I would have liked to do better and avoid ending up on the floor. It’s disappointing, but I wanted to approach the match in the best possible way,” explained Guica, clearly downcast.
Van Snick, silver medallist at the London Olympics, admitted to her coach that she was completely drained after her fight against Guica, who had sensed her opponent’s fatigue but hadn’t managed to take advantage of it.
“I was feeling good and I could tell she was losing energy. It’s frustrating because after the match, I was physically in better shape than she was. I knew it was going to be a tough fight but I really believed my chances were good.”
The Québécoise from La Prairie underwent hand surgery after an injury in March. However, she was able to recover in time for the World Championships in June and the Olympic Games.
This was Guica’s second Olympic appearance. She placed ninth in Rio in 2016. Evidently, the 27-year-old judoka noted several differences between her two Olympic experiences.
“For Tokyo, we mostly trained at home. Still, I had the chance to work on my weak points. Once here, the ambiance was good. It was nice to be cheered on during the fights.”
On Monday, Jessica Klimkait (57 kg) and Arthur Margelidon (73 kg) will both be in action. World champion Klimkait has to bye to the round of 16, while Margelidon will face off against Sulaiman Hamad of Saudi Arabia in the round of 32.
