Vancouver, 29 mars 2023 – Copper Mountain était le théâtre du dernier rendez-vous de la saison de demi-lune en ski acrobatique mardi dans le circuit Nor-Am. Quatre athlètes canadiens étaient inscrits à cette compétition où Emma Morozumi s’est démarquée en montant sur la troisième marche du podium.
Le site de Copper Mountain a semblé sourire à Morozumi cette saison, elle qui avait aussi terminé sur la troisième marche du podium au même endroit en janvier. La skieuse de 18 ans avait également goûté aux joies de la victoire lors du passage du circuit à Calgary, sa ville natale, à la fin du mois de janvier.
« Je sentais qu’Emma était nerveuse en qualification, mais elle s’est extrêmement bien reprise par la suite. Elle ne voulait rien risquer et je voyais qu’elle y allait de manière plus sécuritaire en finale. Elle en a fait assez pour terminer sur le podium et elle était très fière », a commenté l’entraîneur Rex Thomas.
Mardi, Morozumi a seulement été devancé par les Américaines Riley Jacobs, première, et Piper Arnold, deuxième. Vienna Biletsky a terminé au neuvième rang.
En janvier, Biletsky a eu la chance de vivre son baptême en Coupe du monde, elle qui avait terminé 15 lors du passage du circuit chez elle, à Calgary.
Grâce à sa médaille de bronze de mardi, Morozumi conclut la saison au premier rang du classement général du circuit Nor-Am, 20 points devant Jacobs. Biletsky s’est quant à elle classé septième.
« Ç’a été une superbe année pour Emma, en finissant première, elle devrait se retrouver de manière régulière en Coupe du monde l’an prochain. C’était notre objectif principal avec elle cette année et je suis vraiment fière de la façon dont elle s’est présentée à chacune de ses sorties », s’est réjoui Thomas.
Liam Duffy (Calgary, Alb) a de son côté obtenu le meilleur résultat canadien de la journée chez les hommes en terminant en sixième place. Il égale du même coup le meilleur classement de sa carrière en Nor-Am, lui qui avait aussi terminé sixième à Calgary en janvier.
« Liam revient d’une sérieuse blessure subie l’an dernier. La saison a été un long cheminement pour qu’il revienne à 100%. Il a été bon à sa deuxième descente en qualification afin d’obtenir son billet pour la finale. Il était vraiment heureux et il a élevé son jeu d’un cran en finale pour finir sixième, ç’a été une belle compétition pour lui », a expliqué l’entraîneur.
Devon Spate, également de Calgary, a de son côté terminé 13e échelon. Le podium a été dominé par les Américains, Ben Harrington a remporté la médaille d’or devant ses compatriotes Carl McCarthy et Eugene Morris.
Au classement général du circuit nord-américain, Duffy termine la saison en 13e place alors que Spate pointe 18e. Le meilleur Canadien est Adam Fiselier au sixième rang.
« C’est une très belle fin de saison pour toute notre équipe. On se tourne vers une Coupe Canada dès ce vendredi. Je suis fier de notre équipe et les attentes seront très élevées pour tout le monde la saison prochaine », a conclu Rex Thomas.

Emma Morozumi finished first in 2023 Women’s Noram rankings
Vancouver, March 29, 2023 – Copper Mountain was the site of the Nor-Am Circuit’s final freestyle halfpipe event of the season on Tuesday. Four Canadian athletes took part, and Emma Morozumi was the standout performer, finishing on the third step of the podium.
Copper Mountain appears to have smiled upon Morozumi this season; she won another bronze medal there in January. The 18-year-old also got a taste of victory when the circuit visited her hometown of Calgary in late January.
“I could tell that Emma was nervous during the qualification rounds, but she really recovered well afterwards. She didn’t want to take any risks, and I could see that she was playing it safe in the final. It was enough to get her onto the podium, and she was very proud of that,” noted her coach, Rex Thomas.
On Tuesday, only Riley Jacobs (1st) and Piper Arnold (2nd), both of the USA, managed to outperform Morozumi. Vienna Biletsky finished ninth.
In January, Biletsky experienced her World Cup debut, finishing 15th when the circuit made a stop in her hometown of Calgary.
Thanks to Tuesday’s bronze medal, Morozumi concludes the season in first place overall on the Nor-Am Circuit, twenty points ahead of Jacobs. Biletsky is ranked seventh.
“Emma has had a fantastic season. With her first place finish, she should become a World Cup regular next year. That was our main objective. I’m really proud of the way she performed at each of her events,” added Thomas.
Liam Duffy (Calgary, AB) posted the best Canadian result of the day among the men, finishing sixth. In doing so, he also matched his best career Nor-Am result, having also finished sixth in Calgary last January.
“Liam recently recovered from a serious injury he suffered last year. It’s been a long road this season to get him back to full strength. He did well on his second qualification run and advanced to the final. He was really happy, and he upped his game a bit to finish sixth. The competition went well for him,” explained the coach.
Devon Spate, also of Calgary, finished the competition in 13th place. The Americans dominated the podium, with Ben Harrington winning gold, ahead of his compatriots Carl McCarthy and Eugene Morris.
In the overall North American circuit rankings, Duffy finished 13th, while Spate finished 18th. Adam Fiselier is the top-ranked Canadian, in sixth place.
“It was a great way for the whole team to wrap up the season. This Friday, we’ll be at the Canada Cup. I’m really proud of our team, and expectations will be high for everyone next year,” concluded Thomas.
