Judo Canada – Cadet European Cup

Erik Vandersanden fifth in Turkey

Montréal, March 3, 2018 – Erik Vandersanden was the best performing Canadian athlete on Saturday during the Judo Cadet European Cup in Antalya, Turkey. He lost the bronze medal final in the -60 kg, placing him in fifth place.

Local favourite Salih Yildiz defeated him by ippon.

“I felt like I was outgrip a bit. I wasn’t able to control him. It kept dropping, it was my biggest problem,” commented Vandersanden.

“It was an excellent day for him. It’s his first time having such a good result at a European Cup. He made a few mistakes, it took him a little while to adapt his style, and his opponent was very explosive and was able to throw him,” added his coach, Alexandre Emond.

Earlier today, the Canadian judoka lost his semi-final fight by ippon against Ukrainian Ivan Prudius. In the preliminary rounds, Vandersanden won 3 bouts.

“I wanted to go for the gold. I was disappointed but I still hoped to fight for a medal. I need to listen more to my coach during the fight. I get lost in the fight and forget to pay attention to the coach sometimes,” explained Vandersanden.

“He wasn’t lucky during his fight against Prudius. He was able to immobilize him, but the referees didn’t give him points for it,” added Emond. “It was heart-breaking for him. He should have won that fight. ”

Joel Demaere seventh in the -60 kg category

Joel Demaere ended the day in repechage, where he finished in 7th place. Also fighting in the -60 kg category, he lost against Turk Salih Yildiz, who won by ippon. During his previous fight in repechage, Demaere won by ippon against Swedish Pelle Mattsson. The Canadian athlete had one victory and one loss in the preliminary rounds.

“He could also have done better. During the quarterfinal, the referee’s call was borderline. Kazakh Tilegen Tynarbay was given the victory. Joel started the move and his opponent reacted just a little. The referee gave an ippon, even though there was no technique. Joel was disappointed, but bounced back well during his first fight in repechage. He won against the Swedish athlete with a stranglehold. Then, he was taken by surprise by the Turk, who threw him on his back. ”
