Montréal, 4 juin 2022 – Étienne Briand a connu une journée en deux temps samedi, au Grand Chelem de Tbilissi, en Géorgie. Après avoir signé une victoire convaincante d’entrée de jeu, le judoka canadien a dû s’avouer vaincu contre un adversaire familier au troisième tour du tableau des moins de 81 kg.

Pour l’occasion, Briand avait rendez-vous avec Zelim Tckaev, un athlète qu’il avait déjà affronté à de multiples reprises lors de camps préparatoires et qui détonne par son style unique. Le tout a laissé place à un duel âprement disputé qui s’est soldé par un gain du représentant de l’Azerbaïdjan.

« Je m’étais déjà entraîné avec Tckaev et j’avais souvenir que ça pouvait être assez compliqué de combattre contre lui. C’est un gars qui a une très bonne technique, mais qui a un timing assez bizarre. Je savais que ça allait être un bon défi », a lancé Briand, qui n’a pas été en mesure de contenir les nombreuses attaques de l’Azéri.

Ce dernier a montré ses couleurs tôt dans le combat en marquant un waza-ari dès la première minute. Il a ensuite maintenu le rythme avant de conclure l’engagement une minute plus tard en projetant Briand au sol une seconde fois pour l’emporter par ippon.

« J’ai vraiment été surpris ! Je ne m’attendais pas à ce qu’il réussisse à me faire tomber sur le waza-ari et j’ai dû faire du judo de rattrapage. J’ai essayé de revenir de l’arrière, mais je n’ai pas été capable de trouver l’ouverture et il a profité d’une erreur pour finir le combat par ippon. Il m’a particulièrement étonné », a concédé Briand à l’issue de la journée.

Malgré cette défaite, le judoka de l’unifolié retiendra du positif de ce Grand Chelem, à commencer par son triomphe contre le Français Tizie Gnamien, un autre rival bien connu.

« J’ai vraiment bien fait contre lui, a poursuivi Briand. C’était aussi un ancien partenaire d’entraînement et j’étais très confiant de pouvoir le faire tomber. Il a commencé en force avec un waza-ari, mais j’ai pu revenir de l’arrière en marquant à mon tour avant de gagner par ippon. J’ai bien exécuté et c’était un très bon combat pour moi. »

Le Sud-Coréen Joonhwan Lee a été couronné au terme du tournoi grâce à une victoire contre le Géorgien Tato Grigalashvili en grande finale. De son côté, Zelim Tckaev a atteint l’une des deux finales de bronze, où il a baissé pavillon contre l’Ouzbek Sharofiddin Bolaboev. L’Azéri Eljan Hajiyev a complété le podium en l’emportant contre l’Italien Tiziano Falcone dans l’autre duel pour la troisième place.

Seul représentant du Canada en action à Tbilissi, Étienne Briand profitera de quelques jours de repos avant de revenir au pays où un autre défi l’attend, mais cette fois à l’extérieur du tatami.

« Je suis parti depuis presque un mois, car j’avais un camp en Italie, alors je vais devoir me remettre dans mes recherches assez rapidement, a lancé en riant celui qui poursuit son doctorat au département d’économie de l’UQAM. J’en ai profité dans les dernières semaines, parce que je sais que les études me tiendront bien occupé cet été ! »

Étienne Briand Upset by Former Training Partner

Montréal, June 4, 2022 – Étienne Briand had a day of highs and lows at the Tbilisi Grand Slam on Saturday. After a solid opening win, the Canadian judoka was defeated by a familiar opponent in the third round of the under-81 kg draw.

Briand was up against Zelim Tckaev, an athlete he has faced many times at training camps and who has a unique fighting style. The fiercely contested bout ended in a win for the Azerbaijani.

“I had trained with Tckaev in the past, and I remembered that he was not easy to beat. He has great technique, but his timing is a bit strange. I knew it would be a challenging fight,” said Briand, who was unable to ward off Tckaev’s numerous attacks.

Tckaev made an early impact by scoring a waza-ari in the first minute of the match. He then maintained the intensity before clinching the bout a minute later, knocking Briand to the ground a second time to win by ippon.

“I was really surprised! I wasn’t expecting him to knock me down with the waza-ari, so I was forced to try to catch up. I attempted to grab him from behind, but I couldn’t find an opening, and he was able to take advantage of a mistake I made to score the ippon. I was really shocked,” stated Briand at the end of the day.

Despite his loss, Briand is focusing on the positive moments of the Grand Slam tournament, including his second-round defeat of France’s Tizie Gnamien, another well-known rival.

“I fought really well against him,” said Briand. “He’s also a former training partner of mine, and I was pretty sure I could take him down. He started strong with a waza-ari, but I too was able to score and win by ippon. I executed it well. It was a good fight for me.”

In the grand final, Joonhwan Lee of South Korea defeated Tato Grigalashvili of Georgia to snag the crown. Zelim Tckaev advanced to one of the bronze medal finals, where he bowed out to Sharofiddin Bolaboev of Uzbekistan. Eljan Hajiyev of Azerbaijan rounded out the podium by defeating Italy’s Tiziano Falcone in the other battle for bronze.

As the only Canadian in action in Tbilisi, Briand will take a few days to rest before returning to Canada, where a different kind of challenge awaits him.

“I’ve been gone for almost a month because I had a training camp in Italy, so I’ll have to get caught up on my research pretty quickly,” said Briand, who is pursuing a PhD in economics at UQAM. “I took advantage of the break these past few weeks because I know my studies are going to keep me very busy this summer!”
