Judo Canada - Grand Chelem
Montréal, 8 mai 2026 – L’Albertaine Evelyn Beaton s’est inclinée à son premier duel des moins de 52 kg du Grand Chelem d’Astana, au Kazakhstan, vendredi. La médaillée d’argent aux récents Championnats panaméricains senior, en avril, a baissé pavillon contre Meruyert Sarsenova, du Kazakhstan.
« Je pense qu’Evelyn était un peu nerveuse aujourd’hui, puis elle n’a pas été en mesure d’exprimer son plein potentiel, a souligné l’entraîneur de l’équipe nationale, Antoine Valois-Fortier. C’est certain qu’elle était un peu déçue, mais ça fait partie des hauts et des bas de l’apprentissage. »
Sarsenova, son adversaire, a d’ailleurs combattu pour une médaille de bronze et s’est classée cinquième, plus tard en journée.
Âgée de 21 ans, Beaton participait seulement au quatrième Grand Chelem de sa carrière. Elle était dans une bonne position tôt dans l’affrontement. Lors d’une attaque de Sarsenova, la judoka canadienne s’attendait à être en mesure de la contrer, mais a été surprise par cette offensive qui est venue conclure le match par ippon. « Je suis confiant qu’elle va rebondir au courant des prochaines semaines pour revenir plus forte de ces petites embûches-là », a précisé Valois-Fortier.
La compétition se poursuivra tout au long de la fin de semaine avec d’autres Canadiens en action. La première tête de série chez les moins de 81 kg, François Gauthier-Drapeau, a obtenu un laissez-passer dans sa catégorie et accède directement au second tour, samedi. Lowan Le Bris sera du tableau des moins de 73 kg, lui qui prendra part à un tout premier Grand Chelem. Il se mesurera au Français Maxime Gobert au premier tour.
La même journée, mais chez les femmes, la vice-championne du monde Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-63 kg) se frottera à l’une des favorites locales, Samalay Yergaliyeva, d’entrée de jeu. Quant à elle, Coralie Godbout affrontera Khuslen Otgonbayar, de la Mongolie, dimanche, chez les moins de 78 kg. « Catherine [Beauchemin-Pinard] et François [Gauthier-Drapeau] sont très expérimentés. Lowan Le Bris est très talentueux et en est à ses premiers pas à ce niveau-là, puis Coralie [Godbout], que j’espère voir sur le podium. Je m’attends à ce qu’ils aspirent pour une médaille », a mentionné l’entraîneur, médaillé de bronze aux Jeux olympiques de 2012.

Evelyn Beaton caught off guard
Montréal, May 8, 2026 – Albertan judoka Evelyn Beaton lost her first bout in the Under 52kg division at the Astana Grand Slam, Kazakhstan on Friday. A silver medalist at the recent Senior Pan American Championships in April, Beaton was defeated by Kazakhstan’s Meruyert Sarsenova.
“I think Evelyn was a little nervous today, and because of that she wasn’t able to reach her full potential,” explained national team coach Antoine Valois-Fortier. “She was certainly a little disappointed, but that’s just a part of the ups and downs of experience.”
Kazahk athlete Sarsenova went on to the bronze medal round, and later finished fifth in place.
At 21 years old, Beaton was competing in only her fourth Grand Slam. While she was in a strong position early in the match, an attack by Sarsenova caught Beaton off guard. The Canadian judoka expected to be able to counter it, but the bout was ended with an ippon from her opponent.
“I’m confident over the next few weeks she’ll bounce back, and come out overall stronger from these minor setbacks,” Valois-Fortier said.
The Grand Slam continues throughout the weekend, with other Canadians stepping onto the tatami to demonstrate their skills. François Gauthier-Drapeau – the top seed in the Under 81kg class – received a bye in his category, and will advance directly to the second round on Saturday. Lowan Le Bris will compete in the Under 73kg category in his first-ever Grand Slam appearance, and will face France’s Maxime Gobert in the first round.
In women’s judo action Saturday, world vice champion Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (Under 63kg) will take on local favorite Samalay Yergaliyeva in her first bout. Coralie Godbout will face Mongolia’s Khuslen Otgonbayar Sunday, in the Under 78 kg division.
“Catherine [Beauchemin-Pinard] and François [Gauthier-Drapeau] are very experienced judokas. Lowan Le Bris is also very talented, and he’s just getting started at this level of competition. Coralie [Godbout], will also be on the mat, and I hope to see her on the podium. I do expect some of our judokas to be in the running for a medal,” noted Valois-Fortier, who was himself a bronze medalist at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
